The interface cable is not a standard accessory. Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the interface you intend to use (USB or Network). Do NOT connect the interface cable at this time. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process.

 USB interface cable

Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2 meters). When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub.

 Your machine has a USB interface that is compatible with the USB 2.0 specification. This interface is also

compatible with Full-Speed USB 2.0; however, the maximum data transfer rate will be 12 Mbits/s. The machine can also be connected to a computer that has a USB 1.1 interface.

 Network cable

Use a straight-through Category5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet Network.

When you move the machine, grasp the side handholds that are under the scanner. Do NOT carry the MFC by holding it at the bottom.

DO NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done when installing the driver.

4 Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly

into the machine.

2 Unpack the drum unit and toner cartridge

assembly.

3 Rock it from side to side several times to

distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly.

5 Close the front cover of the machine.

2 Loading paper in the paper

1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the

machine.

3 Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams

and misfeeds.

4 Put paper in the paper tray. Make sure that the

paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark (1).

2 While pressing the green paper-guide release

lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper

size you are using. Make sure that the guides

are firmly in the slots.

For Legal size paper, press the release button in the bottom of the paper tray and then pull out the back of the paper tray. (Legal size paper is not available in some regions.)

Make sure the paper guides touch the sides of the paper so it will feed properly. If you do not this, it may cause damage to your machine.

5 Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine.

Make sure that it is completely inserted into the machine.

Connect the AC power cord to the machine.

Turn the power switch on.

• The machine must be grounded using a 3-prong plug.

• Since the machine is grounded through the power outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone network by keeping the power cord connected to your machine when you connect it to a telephone line. Similarly, you can protect yourself when you want to move your machine by disconnecting the telephone line first and then the power cord.

If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone, connect it as shown below.

3 Connect one end of the telephone line cord to

the jack on the machine marked LINE and the other end to a modular wall jack.

Make sure the telephone line cord is connected to the jack labeled LINE and not the EXT. jack.

If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone answering device, connect it as shown below.

Please set the receive mode to External TAD. For more details, see Choosing the correct Receive Mode on page 9 and Connecting an external TAD in Chapter 7 of the User’s Guide.

You can change the contrast to help the LCD look lighter or darker.

6 Setting the date and time

The machine displays the date and time, and if you setup the station ID, it will add it to each fax you send.

pad, and then press OK.

6 Use the dial pad to enter your name (up to 20

characters), and then press OK.

• If you need to enter a character that is on the same

key as the previous character, press to move the cursor to the right.

• If you entered a letter incorrectly and want to

8 Choosing the correct Receive Mode

The correct Receive mode is determined by the external devices and telephone subscriber services (Voice Mail, Distinctive Ring, etc.) you have (or will be using) on the same line as the Brother machine.

Will you be using a Distinctive Ring number for receiving faxes?

Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring" but telephone companies may have other names for this service such as Custom Ringing, RingMaster, Personalized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Call, and Smart Ring. See Distinctive Ring in Chapter 7 of the User's Guide for instruction on setting up your machine using this feature.

Will you be using Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother machine?

If you have Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother machine, there is a strong possibility that Voice mail and the Brother machine will conflict with each other when receiving incoming calls. See Voice Mail in Chapter 7 of the User's Guide for instructions on setting up your machine using this service.

Will you be using a Telephone Answering Device on the same telephone line as your Brother machine?

Your external telephone answering device (TAD) will automatically answer every call. Voice messages are stored on the external TAD and fax messages are printed. Choose External TAD as your receive mode. See the instructions below.

Will you be using your Brother machine on a dedicated fax line?

Your machine automatically answers every call as a fax. Choose Fax Only as your receive mode. See the instructions below.

Will you be using your Brother machine on the same line as your telephone?

Do you want to receive voice calls and faxes automatically

The Fax/Tel receive mode is used when sharing the Brother machine and your telephone on the same line. Choose Fax/Tel as your receive mode. See the instructions below.

Important Note: You can not receive voice messages on either Voice Mail or an answering machine when choosing the Fax/Tel mode.

Do you expect to receive very few faxes?

Choose Manual as your receive mode. You control the phone line and must answer every call yourself. See the instructions below.

9 Tone and pulse dialing mode

Your machine comes set for Tone dialing service. If you have Pulse dialing service (rotary), you need to change the dialing mode.

(Canada only)

1 Press Menu. 2 Press 0. 3 Press 4. 4 Press or to select Pulse (or Tone).

Press OK.

5 Press Stop/Exit.

10 Dial Prefix

The dial prefix setting will automatically dial a predefined number before every fax number you dial. For example: If your phone system requires a 9 to dial an outside number this setting will automatically dial 9 for every fax you send.

1 Press Menu. 2 Press 0. 3 Press 5 (For Canada, press 6). 4 Enter the prefix number (up to 5 digits) on the

dial pad, and then press OK.

• You can use the number 0 to 9 , # , l and !. (Press Hook to display “!“.) You cannot use ! with any other numbers or characters. If your telephone system requires a timed break recall (hookflash), press Hook to enter the break.

• If the pulse dialing mode is on, # and * are not available to use. (Canada only)

5 Press Stop/Exit.

• If the machine is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen appears.

Click OK. The Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter an IP address for your machine that is suitable for your network by following the onscreen instructions.

12 The installation of the Brother drivers will

automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another, please wait for a while.

For Windows Vista®, when this screen appears, click the check box and click Install.

13 When the On-Line Registration screen is

displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Once you have completed the registration process, close your web browser to return to this window. Then click Next.

14 Click Finish to restart your computer.

The MFL-Pro Suite has been installed and the installation is now complete.

• XML Paper Specification Printer Driver The XML Paper Specification Printer Driver is the most suitable driver when printing from the applications that use the XML Paper Specification

documents. Please download the latest driver by accessing the Brother Solutions Center at http://solutions.brother.com/

• MFL-Pro Suite includes the Network Printer Driver, Network Scanner Driver, Brother ControlCenter3 and ScanSoft™ PaperPort™ 11SE. ScanSoft™ PaperPort™ 11SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents.

• After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instructions or read the on-line help and FAQ’s in Start/ All Programs/Brother/MFC-XXXX LAN.

6 The Brother software will search for the Brother

device. During this time the following screen will appear.

7 When this screen appears, click OK.

For Mac OS® X 10.3.x or greater users: The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother printer driver, scanner driver and Brother ControlCenter2 have been installed and the installation is now complete. Go to step 12.

Make sure that you have finished the instructions from step 1 Setting Up the Machine on pages 4 through 11.

1 Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn

the power switch on.

2 Connect the network interface cable to the

machine, and then connect it to your network.

5 Double-click the Start Here OSX icon to install.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

Please wait, it will take a few seconds for the software to install. After the installation, click Restart to finish installing the software.

device. During this time the following screen will appear.

Enter a name for your Macintosh® in Display Name up to 15 characters long and click OK.

• If you want to use the machine’s Scan key to scan over the network you must check the Register

your computer with the "Scan To" function on the machine box.

• The name you enter will appear on the machine’s LCD when you press the Scan key and choose a scan option. (For more information, see Network Scanning in the Software User’s Guide on the CDROM.)

Setting your IP address, Subnet Mask and

Gateway using BRAdmin Light

The default password for the print server is ‘access’. You can use BRAdmin Light to change this password.

1 Click Install Other Drivers or Utilities on the

menu screen.

If you have a DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you don’t have to do the following operation. The print server will automatically obtain its own IP address.

1 Start BRAdmin Light. It will search for new

devices automatically.

2 Click BRAdmin Light and follow the on-screen

instructions.

2 Double-click the unconfigured device.

3 Choose STATIC for the Boot Method. Enter

the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway, and then click OK.

4 The address information will be saved to the

machine.

desktop.

2 Choose Library, Printers, Brother and then

Utilities.

3 Double-click the file BRAdmin Light.jar and

run the software. BRAdmin Light will then search for new devices automatically.

The Brother print server is equipped with a web server that allows you to monitor its status or change some of its configuration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol).

• The User Name is ‘admin’ and the default password is ‘access’. You can use a web browser to change this password.

To restore all network settings of the internal Print/Scan server to factory default, please follow the steps below.

1 Make sure the machine is not in use, then

disconnect all the cables from the machine (except power cable).

2 Press Menu, 4, 0. 3 Press 1 to select Reset. 4 Press 1 to select Yes. 5 The machine will restart. Re-connect cables

once this is complete.

You can print the Network Configuration List to confirm the current network settings. To print the Network Configuration List:

1 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the

power cord is plugged in.

2 Turn on the machine and wait until the machine

is in the Ready state.

3 Press Reports and or to select

Network Configuration. Press OK. The machine will print the current network settings.
