The interface cable is not a standard accessory. Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the interface you intend to use (Parallel or USB).

USB interface cable

Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub.

Do NOT connect the interface cable at this time.

Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process. Parallel interface cable

Please make sure you use a Parallel interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). Use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant.

Do NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process.

2 Install the Handset

1 Connect the curled handset cord to the MFC and the other end to the handset.

2 Open the control panel cover by lifting it toward the back.

Step 1 Setting Up the MFC

4 LoadTray Paper in the Paper

1Pull the paper tray completely out of the MFC.

2While pressing the paper guide release lever, slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots.

For Legal size paper, press in the inside latches and pull out the back of the paper tray.

3Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds.

4Put paper in the paper tray.

Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark.

5Put the paper tray firmly back into the MFC and unfold the output paper tray support flap before you use the MFC.

5Install the Power Cord and Phone Line

Do not connect the Parallel or USB cable yet.

1Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn the power switch on.

2Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jack on the MFC marked LINE and the other end to a modular wall jack.

Warning

The MFC must be grounded using a 3-prong plug.

Since the MFC is grounded through the power outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone network by keeping the power cord connected to your MFC when you connect it to a telephone line. Similarly, you can protect yourself when you want to move your MFC by disconnecting the telephone line first and then the power cord.

If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone, connect it as shown below.

If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone answering device, connect it as shown below.

Please set the receive mode to External TAD.

Step 1 Setting Up the MFC

6 Set the Date and Time

The MFC displays the date and time, and prints it on every fax you send.

1 Press Menu/Set.

2 Press 0.

3 Press 2.

4Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

Year:2005

(e.g. Enter 0, 5 for 2005.)

5Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

Month:03

(e.g. Enter 0, 3 for March)

6Enter the two digits for the day on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

Day:01

(e.g. Enter 0, 1.)

7Enter the time in 24-hour format on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

Time:15:25

(e.g. Enter 1, 5, 2, 5 for 3:25 P.M.)

8 Press Stop/Exit.

If you make a mistake, press Stop/Exit to start from Step 1.

7 Set your Station ID

You should store your name and fax number to be printed on all fax pages that you send.

1 Press Menu/Set.

2 Press 0.

3 Press 3.

4Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

5Enter your telephone number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press

Menu/Set.

(If your telephone number and fax number are the same, enter the same number again.)

6Use the dial pad to enter your name (up to 20 characters), and then press Menu/Set.

Refer to the following chart for entering your name.

If you need to enter a character that is on

the same key as the previous character, press to move the cursor to the right.

1 Fill out the Product Registration and Test Sheet.

2Place the sheet face down in the Automatic Document Feeder.

You will receive a confirmation fax of your Product Registration.

Supplied CD-ROM “MFL-Pro Suite”

The CD-ROM includes the following items:

MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE, ScanSoft® OmniPage® and True Type® fonts. PaperPort® 9.0SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents. ScanSoft® OmniPage®, which is integrated into PaperPort® 9.0SE, is an OCR application that converts an image into text and inserts it into your default word processor.

Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up

the MFC” on pages 4 - 11.

Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.

1Turn off and unplug the MFC from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable.

2Turn on your computer.

(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

3Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your MFC. If the language screen appears, select your language.

4The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite.

5After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click

Yes.

6The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite.

7When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms.

8Select Local Connection, and then click

Next.

The installation will continue.

If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM.

(MFC-7225N only)

If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

9When this screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the MFC.

0 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC.

It will take a few seconds for the installation screen to appear.

The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear.

DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation.

AWhen the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions.

Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen.

The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Printer Driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete.

9When this screen appears, connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the MFC.

8Select Local Connection, and then click

The installation will continue.

(MFC-7225N only)

If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

For Windows® XP users, wait for a while since the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another.

CWhen the following screen appears, click

Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation.

DAfter the computer restarts, the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start.

Follow the instructions on the screen. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

EFor Windows® 2000 Professional users, if the Digital Signature Not Found dialog boxes appear, click Yes to install the drivers.

If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu.

Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen.

The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete.

Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software

For Network Interface Cable Users (MFC-7225N and Optional NC-2200w only)

(For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/NT/2000 Professional/XP)

Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the MFC” on pages 4 - 11.

1Turn off and unplug the MFC from the AC outlet.

2Connect the network cable to the MFC, and then connect it to a free port on your hub.

If you are using the optional NC-2200w External Wireless Print/Scan Server, follow installation steps 1 to 3 in the NC-2200w Quick Setup Guide first. Then go to step 6.

3 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC.

4Turn on your computer.

(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

Close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.

Before installation, if you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print after the installation, re-start your Personal Firewall software.

5Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your MFC. If the language screen appears, select your language.

6The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite.

If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM.

7After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click

Yes.

8The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite.

9When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms.

0Select Network Connection and then click

Next.

(MFC-7225N only)

If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

AThe installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear.

DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation.

BIf the MFC is configured for your network, select your MFC from the list and then click

Next.

This window will not appear if there is only one of this Brother model connected on the network, it will be selected automatically.

CIf the MFC is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen appears.

Click OK. The Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter the IP address information appropriate to your network by following the on-screen instruction.

DWhen the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions.

EWhen the following screen appears, click

Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

The MFL-Pro Suite, Network Printer driver, Network Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete.

For Network installations, the Repair MFL-Pro Suite selection from the main menu is not supported.

Network Scanning is not supported in Windows NT® 4.0.

1Turn off and unplug the MFC from the AC

outlet and disconnect it from your Macintosh®, if you already connected an interface cable.

2 Turn on your Macintosh®.

3Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive.

4Double-click the Start Here OS 9.1-9.2 icon to install the printer and scanner drivers. If the language screen appears, select your language.

5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install.

6Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®.

7Connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh®, and then connect it to the MFC.

DO NOT connect the MFC to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub.

8 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC.

9 From the Apple® menu, open the Chooser.

0Click the Brother Laser icon.

On the right side of the Chooser, select the MFC to which you want to print.

Close the Chooser.

The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed.

The ControlCenter2.0 is not supported in Mac OS® 9.x.

ATo install Presto!® PageManager®, click the

Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions.

You can easily scan, share and organize photos and documents using Presto!® PageManager®.

2 Turn on your Macintosh®.

3Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive.

5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install.

6Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®.

7After the DeviceSelector window appears,

connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh® and then to the MFC.

4Double-click the Start Here OSX icon to install the drivers and MFL-Pro Suite. If the language screen appears, select your language.

The DeviceSelector window will not appear if you have connected a USB interface cable to the MFC before restarting your Macintosh®or if you are overwriting a previously installed version of the Brother software. If you encounter this problem continue with the installation but skip step 9. You should select your Brother machine from the Model pulldown list in the main screen of ControlCenter2.0.

Installing the BRAdmin Professional

Configuration Utility (Windows® only)

The BRAdmin Professional utility is designed to manage your Brother network connected devices such as network-ready Multifunction devices and/or network-ready printers in a Local Area Network (LAN) environment.

BRAdmin Professional can also be used to manage devices from other manufacturers whose products support SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).
