Preface
This Service Manual is intended for use by service personnel and details the specifications, construction, theory of operation, and maintenance for the Brother machines noted on the front cover. It includes information required for troubleshooting and service--disassembly, reassembly, and lubrication--so that service personnel will be able to understand equipment function, repair the equipment in a timely manner and order spare parts as necessary.
To perform appropriate maintenance so that the machine is always in the bes t poss ible condition for the customer, service personnel must adequately understand and apply this manual.
The table below shows the functional comparison between the models covered by this manual.

How this manual i s orga nized
This manual is made up of nine chapters and appendices.
CHAPTER 1 PARTS NAMES AND FUNCTIO NS
Contains external views and names of components and describes their functions. Information about the keys on the control panel is included to help you check operation or make adjustments.
CHAPTER 2 SPECIFICATIONS
Lists the specifications of each model, which enables you to make a comparison of different models.
CHAPTER 3 THEORY O F OPERATION
Gives an overview of the scanning and printing mechanisms as well as the sensors, actuators, and control electronics. It aids in understanding the basic principles of operation as well as locating defects for troubleshooting.
CHAPTER 4 ERROR INDICATIO N AND T ROUBLESHOOTING
Details error messa ges a nd codes that the incorporated self-diagnostic functions dis pla y if a ny e rror or malfunction occurs. If any error message appears, refer to this chapter to find which components should be checked or replaced.
The latter half of this chapter provides sa mple problems that could occ ur in the main sections o f the machine and related troubleshooting procedures. This will help service personnel pinpoint and repair defective components.
CHAPTER 5 TRANSFER OF DATA LEFT IN THE M ACHINE TO BE SENT FOR REPAIR
Describes how to transfer data left in the machine to be sent for repair. The service personnel should instruct end users to follow the transfer procedure given in this chapter if the machine at the user site cannot print received data due to the printing mechanism defective. End users can transfer received data to another machine to prevent data loss.
CHAPTER 6 DISASSEMBLY/ REASSEMBLY AND LUBRICATION
Details proce dure s for disa s s e mbling and reasse mbling the machine together with rela te d notes. The disassembly order flow provided enables you to see at a glance the quickest way to get to component(s) involved.
At the start of a disassembly job, you check the disassembly order flow that guides you through a shortcut to the target components.
This chapter also covers screw tightening torques and lubrication points to which the specified lubricants should be applied during reassembly jobs.
CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTM ENTS AND UPDATING OF SE TT ING S , REQUIRED AFTE R PARTS
REPLACEMENT
Details a djus tments and updating of settings, which are required if the head/carriage unit, main PCB and some other parts have been replaced.
CHAPTER 8 CLEANING
Provides cleaning procedures not covered by the User's Guide. Before starting any repair work, clean the machine as it may solve the problem concerned.

CHAPTER 9 MAINTENANCE MODE
Descr ibes the maintena nce mode which is excl usively designed for t he purpose of checks, s ettings and a dju stments of the machine using the keys on the control p anel.
In the maintenance mode, you ca n updat e memory (EEP ROM: electr ically eras able progr ammable read- only memory) contents f or optimizing the drive conditions of the head/ca rriage unit or the paper feed roller and paper ejection roller in the engine unit, if t hose units have been replaced, or for setting the C I S s c a nner area, for ex a mp le. You c a n also cu s t o mize t h e E EPRO M a c co r di ng t o t he s hi p ment destina tion of the ma chine concerned. In additi on, you ca n perf orm opera tiona l checks of t he LCD , contr ol panel PCB or sensors , perfor m a pr int test, display t he log informat ion or err or codes, a nd modify firmware switches (WSW).
For models with a cordless ha ndset, the maint enance functions dedica ted to cordless ha ndsets ar e provided.
Appendix 1 Reading Labels
Shows the location of labels put on some parts and describes the coding information for serial number, prop erty data, and manufacturing informa tion.
Appendix 2 Firmware Installation
Pr ovides instr uc tions on how t o cha nge fir mwar e stor ed in the fla sh R OM on the main P CB or loa d firmware to a new main PC B from the host PC.
Appendix 3 EEPROM Customizing Codes
Pr ovides instr uctions on how to set u p the EE PROM cus tomizing codes for the var ious prefer ences exclus ively designed for ea ch dest inat ion. T he specif ied cust omizing code is s tor ed in the E EP ROM mount ed on the ma in PCB. If t he main PC B is r eplac ed, ther efore, you need t o set up t he pr oper customizing code with the machine in the ma intenance mode.
Cus tomizing codes cu stomize fir mware for individua l models, enab ling the common firmwar e to be used for various models. A list of EEPROM customizing codes comes with the firmware data provided b y B rother I ndustr i es .
Appendix 4 Firmware Switches ( WSW)
Descr ibes t he functions of the fir mware s witches, which can be divided int o two gr oups : one is for cust omizing prefer ences designed for the shipp ing destina tion (a s describ ed in Appendix 3) and t he other is for modifying pref erences that match the machine t o the environmental condit ions. Us e the latter grou p if the machine malfu nc tions due to mismatching.
Appendix 5 Wiring Diagrams
Pr ovides the wiring diagrams t hat help you understand the connections between PC Bs.
Appendix 6 Circuit Diagrams
Provides the circuit diagrams of the MJ PCB and power supply PCB.
Appendix 7 Deletion of Personal Information
Provides instructions on how t o delete personal information recor ded in the machine and cordless handset(s).
