High Precision Injection

In this cutting-edge generation of petrol
direct injection, the Piezo injectors are
positioned ve ry close to the spark plu gs.
They inject the fuel at high pressure and
with extreme precision. With the four-cylinder
models, the inj ectors’ central pos itioning
means only part of the combustion chamber
needs to be fi lled with an ignitable petrol-air
mixture. The engine can then run “leanly” and
so effi ciently, precis ely in the heavily use d
moderate load range.

Auto Start/Stop function

BMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed
manual transmission automatically shut down
when the vehicle is stationary, for example
at a red light or in a ja m, when the driver
activates the clutch and switches to neutral.
The engine res tarts as soon as the clu tch is
activated again. This innovation signifi cantly
reduces fuel consumption especially in
c i t y t r a f fi c .

Brake Energy Regeneration

To supply a battery with electrical energy,
the generator (alternator) is permanently
driven using engine power, which demands
additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy
Regeneration means the generator
usually only generates electricity when the
driver takes the foot off the accelerator or the
brake – previously unused kinetic energy is
transformed in coasting mode into electrical
energy before being fed into the battery.
In this way, electricity is generated while
coasting, without consuming fuel.

Some BMW EfficientDynamics features are dependent on the
car’s equipment and are not available for all model variants.

Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance

While driving, tyres are constantly changing
shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel.
Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an
improved design and use special materials for
their road treads and side walls, reducing
deforma tion.

Electric Power Steering

In comparison with conventional, hydraulic
steering systems, the electrical steering only
uses energy during actual steering. When the
steering wheel position is constant – for
example, at high speed along the motorway –
the electric motor is inactive.

Optimum Shift Indicator

Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective
and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the
Optimum Shift Indicator, in conjunction with
6-speed manual transmission, comes in. It
shows the driver w hat gear to use in order to
drive more effi ciently.

The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fi ne engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more
than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW Effi cientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in a number of
completely emission-free BMW 7 Series Saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, demand-oriented
combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes a multi-award-winning BMW Effi cientDynamics
technology package as standard that boosts dynamics even further while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

s Standard equipment o Optional equipment

o Lights package includes vicinity lights in

the door handles, which upon unlocking the
doors illuminate the area outside the doors for
20 seconds to enable safe vehicle access in
the dark. Also included: reading lights at the
front, footwell illumination at the front, vanity
mirror lig hts for driver and front passenger and
ambient lighting.

o Xenon Headlights for high and low beam,

incl. daytime driving lights, four light rings and
automatic headlight range control, for better
road illumination at night or in bad weather.

o Adaptive Headlights with variable light
distribution incl. turning lights, only in

conjunction with Xenon Headlights: for optimal
and prompt illumination of bends through
electro-mechanical control of the moveable lamps
as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel.
o High-beam assistant helps the driver at
night by auto matically switc hing from high to
low beam for oncoming traffic and cars ahead,
or when street lighting is sufficient.

o Fog l ights (standard on 125i and 123d,
not available on 135i) integrated in the front
apron ensure extra sa fety i n poor visib ilit y.
Optio n includes exterior mirror heating and
screen washe r nozzles (heated on 125i, 135i
and 123d).

s Rear lights with light sources in LED
technology: each taillight is made up of three

separate high-performance LED sources,
accentuating the tailgate’s dynamic feel.

s Dynamic Braking Lights help vehicles
travelling behind you to evaluate your braking
more accurately. In the event of an emergency
stop, the illuminated area of the brake lights
is increased, so traffic following behind can
tell in an instant the difference between a
light tap on the brake pedal and a hard stop –
for increased driving safety.

o Trailer tow hitch with removable ball head
(not available on 135i).

o Rain sensor including automatic
driving lights control: Once activated, the

rain sensor will automatically switch on the
windscreen wipers when it begins to rain,
adjusting the wiper frequency in line with
rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic
driving lights control activates the low beam
automatically at dusk and in tunnels.
