H.264can,withoutcompromisingimagequality,reducethesizeofadigitalvideolebymorethan80%comparedwiththeMotion JPEGformatandasmuchas50%morethantheMPEG-4standard.Thismeansthatmuchlessnetworkbandwidthandstoragespace arerequiredforavideole.Orseenanotherway,muchhighervideoqualitycanbeachievedforagivenbitrate.

Thismethod(RTPoverUDP)shouldbeusedforlivemulticastvideo.Thevideostreamisalways up-to-date,evenifsomeframesaredropped. Multicastingprovidesthemostefcientusageofbandwidthwhentherearelargenumbersof clientsviewingsimultaneously.Amulticastcannothowever,passanetworkrouterunlessthe routerisconguredtoallowthis.ItisnotpossibletomulticastovertheInternet,forexample. Notealsothatallmulticastviewerscountasoneunicastviewerinthemaximumtotalof20 simultaneousconnections.
Unicastingisusedforvideo-on-demand transmissionsothatthereisnovideotrafc onthenetworkuntilaclientconnectsand requeststhestream. Notethatthereareamaximumof20 simultaneousunicastconnections.

ThisformatusesstandardJPEGstillimagesforthevideostream.Theseimagesarethendisplayedandupdatedataratesufcient tocreateastreamthatshowsconstantlyupdatedmotion.

TheGOPlengthisthenumberofframesbetweentwoconsecutiveI-frames.IncreasingtheGOPlengthmaysaveconsiderablyon bandwidthrequirementsinsomecases,butmayalsohaveanadverseaffectonimagequality.
TheAxisproductsupportsthefollowingH.264prole(s):
ThebitratecanbesetasVariablebitrate(VBR)orMaximumbitrate(MBR).VBRadjuststhebitrateaccordingtotheimage complexity,usingupmorebandwidthforincreasedactivityintheimage,andlessforlowerimageactivity.Whentheactivityin thesceneincreases,thebitratewouldusuallyincreaseaswell.Ifthereisasurplusinbandwidth,thismaynotbeanissueand selectingVariablebitrate(VBR)willbesufcient.Butifbandwidthislimited,itisrecommendedtocontrolthebitratebyselecting Maximumbitrate(MBR).Whentheactivityinthesceneincreases,VBRadjuststhebitrateaccordingtothecomplexity,usingup morebandwidthforincreasedactivityinthescene,andlessforlowersceneactivity.MBRallowsyoutosetatargetbitratethat limitsthebandwidthconsumption.
TheMBRtargetbitrateworksliketheceilingofatent.Itlimitsthebitrate,whilemaintainingsomeexibility.Thebitrate maybounceupanddownwithinthesettargetbutwhenitnearsthesettargetvalue,thelimitationkicksin.However,because MBRwillalwaysprioritizeacontinuousvideostream,itallowstemporaryovershootsfromthetargetbitrate.Becausesettinga targetvaluepreventsthebitratefromincreasing,framerateandimagequalityareaffectednegatively.Topartlycompensatefor this,selectwhichvariableshallbeprioritized,framerateorimagequality.Notsettingaprioritymeansthatframerateand imagequalityareequallyaffected.

Automaticgaincontrol-Thissettingisusedtoautomaticallyadjustthegaintoanappropriaterange,theweakertheimagesignal, thestrongerthegain.SelecttheLinearorEqualizationautomaticgaincontrolmethod.Thelatterusesahistogramequalization method,whichadjuststhegaindynamicallybydistributingthemostfrequentintensityvalues.
Exposurezones-Thissettingsdetermineswhichpartoftheimageisusedtocalculatetheexposure.Formostsituations,theAuto settingcanbeused.Forparticularrequirement,selectDenedandthenclickEditandselectoneofthepredenedareas.
Gain-Thissettingcontrolsthemaximumgain.Loweringthegainreducesthecontrastinthethermalimage.
Overlay
Overlaysareusedtoprovideextrainformation,suchasforensicvideoanalysisorduringproductinstallationandconguration. Overlaysaresuperimposedoverthevideostream.
