AT&T Digital Magic Messenger
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the AT&T Digital Magic Messenger – the exciting new digital system that eliminates the need to constantly answer routine phone calls.
The Magic Messenger is designed to intercept an incoming call before the first ring and answer it with your prerecorded, digitally stored announcement. Your Magic Messenger can provide information such as your business hours, availability of products, location, etc., – all automatically. Then, if your caller stays on the line (or if they press a touch tone key on their phone), the Magic Messenger will ring through to your telephone so that you can provide further assistance.
The Magic Messenger lets you record two announcements for day and night operation. You can select which announcement to play using the ANNOUNCE (or MESSAGE) button on the front panel. If you wish, you may change from one announcement to the other remotely from any touch tone phone. For additional security, this feature is password protected; only those with the password are able to
change the announcement. Announcements are easily recorded through a built-in microphone, or
you may load professionally recorded announcements from a tape recorder through an auxiliary jack at the rear of the unit. You may review your announcements at any time through the Magic Messenger’s speaker.
If you prefer to answer the phone yourself, you may do so at any time by pressing the Magic Messenger’s BYPASS button.
The Magic Messenger is easy to install and easy to operate (plug & play). It simply installs between your incoming telephone line and your telephone or telephone system using standard modular (RJ-11) jacks. It can sit on a shelf or be mounted on a wall.
You never have to worry about temporary power outages with the Magic Messenger. With its built-in self-charging ni-cad battery, your recorded announcements are protected for up to 2 hours. The Magic Messenger is automatically bypassed during power interruptions so your telephone continues to operate as it normally would.

Installation Precautions
Refer to the mounting template included with the unit for instructions on wall-mounted installation.
Observe the following installation precautions:
Do not install the unit in damp areas, or in areas where it is likely to be exposed to rain or moisture. Do not install the unit in areas where the average temperature is likely to go below 32°F or exceed 90°F. Use suitable fasteners on hollow walls or other similar thin materials. If the telephone line has "call-waiting," this service must be terminated by your phone company in order for the Magic Messenger to operate properly.
Connecting a Power Supply
Connect the output plug from the power supply included with the Magic Messenger into the 24V AC/DC jack on the rear panel of the Magic Messenger. Plug the power supply into any convenient 110V AC outlet.
Base Panel
A small switch on the underside of the unit is provided to accommodate certain telephone configurations. This switch should be set in the ’L’ position (loop start), the factory setting, for most installations. If the Magic Messenger is to be installed in conjunction with a PBX system that uses a ground start trunk, the switch must be set to the ’G’ position. (Make sure power if off when changing configurations.)

If the telephone line has "call-waiting," this service must be terminated by your phone company in order for the Magic
Messenger to operate properly. The RECORD, PLAY and MODE lights flash when you first apply
power or following a power interruption of over 2 hours in duration (announcements erased).
The Magic Messenger will answer an incoming call before you hear it ring. The PLAY light will come on to indicate the unit has answered a call (after the announcement has played, the light will go out). After playing the message, the Magic Messenger will ring through whenever the caller presses a touch tone button on his phone. If the caller is not using a touch tone phone, the Magic Messenger will ring through automatically after 15 seconds. During this waiting period, the caller will hear a beep tone every few seconds. The typical cycle will be: 15 second delay with beeps followed by 2 sec. tone, 4 sec. delay and then ring the local telephone. A disconnect signal or DTMF tone will interrupt the process and cause the unit to either disconnect or ring immediately to the local extension.
If a caller does not hang up within 2-3 seconds after the announcement has finished playing, but hangs up before the 15 second waiting period is complete, the unit may produce a short ring at your attendant console or telephone extension.
Remote Operation
Remote operation lets you:
Select the day or night announcement from any touch tone phone. Listen to the night announcement. Record a new night announcement.
