1 Introduction to FXM Computer Communication
There are several ways to connect a computer to the FXM UPS:
Use the RS-232 port to access the UPS’s command line system with Window’s
1. HyperTerminal or other terminal emulation program (see the operator’s manual for your UPS for details).
Use the RS-232 port along with the Novus User Software installed on your computer.
2. The software is downloadable from www.alpha.com (Section 3).
If the optional, factory-installed optional FXM Communication Module is present, then
3. you can communicate with the UPS over a company intranet or the internet using a web browser or with SNMP communications (Section 4).
All of these options are shown in Figure 1.1 below

2 Novus User Software and Microsoft’s .NET Framework
To use the Novus User Software your computer MUST have Microsoft’s free .NET Framework installed. If you try to install it without the .NET Framework installed, your computer will display an error message saying the Framework is not installed.
2.1 Checking Your Computer for the .NET Framework
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Go to Settings. Click on it.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on the Add or Remove Programs icon.
When that window appears, scroll through the list of applications. If you see Microsoft .NET Framework listed as shown below in Figure 2.1, the Framework is already installed and you can go ahead and install the Novus User Software. If you don’t see it listed, you have to install it before installing the software.

2.2 Install Through Microsoft’s Windows Update Web Site
You must have Microsoft’s Internet Explorer installed on your computer to download from Microsoft’s web site. In addition to installing the free .NET Framework, downloading from the web site will bring your computer up to date with all the latest security updates available from Microsoft. If your computer is part of a company network, you should check with your network administrator to see if your network allows software downloads from the internet.

3.1 Introduction
The Novus User Software Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides Windows© like computer communications with the UPS. The screen and it’s features are shown below in Figure 3.1. With it you can monitor, control and set various parameters like the date and time, when the
weekly self test is run, change the relay congurations, etc. The Fault or Alarm indicators
show you if the UPS has a malfunction and what it it. Descriptions of all the screens and their functions are given in Section 3.3, “Operation.”

When a light in this bar is on, move the mouse over the light to learn what the malfunction is. Clicking on the light will send you to the Alarms & Faults screen.

3.2 Installation and Set Up Tools and Materials Required
Novus User Software (available for download from www.alpha.com). It is packaged as
a Zip le, so you have to un-zip it and save it where you can access it.
Computer with at least Windows 98 with Microsoft’s .NET framework installed.
Standard DB–9 to DB-9 serial straight-through computer cable.
