Important

• Use only iVHSI-marked cassettes with this unit.
• This unit is designed to receive using the NTSC, PAL and SECAM color system, record and playback using the NTSC, PAL, SECAM,
MESECAM, M-PAL and N-PAL color
systems.
• Audio/video material may consist of copyrighted work which must not be
recorded without the authorization of
the owner of the copyright. Please
refer to the relevant laws in your
couritry.

Installing

• The unit should be situated with adequate space around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured. Allow 10 cm clearance from the rear and the top of the unit, and 5 cm from the each side.
- Do not place the unit on a bed, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings.
- Do not install the unit in a bookcase, cabinet, or airtight rack where ventilation may be impeded.
• Keep the unit away from radiators and other heat sources.
• Avoid using the unit near strong
magnetic fields.
• Use the unit in the horizontal position only.
• Install the unit at least one meter away from radios and receivers. Otherwise, noise may occur during
radio reception.
• Do not place heavy objects on the
unit.

Cautions

• Do not open the cabinet of the unit.
• Do not push any kind of object into the unit through the cabinet openings as they could touch current carrying parts, which may result In short­circuit, fire, electric shock, or damage to the unit.
• Do not spill liquid of any kind on this
unit. If any liquid is spilled over the
unit, immediately disconnect the unit from the AC outlet, and consult a qualified service engineer.
• Do not put your hand into the tape compartment.
• When the system is not used for an extended period of time, disconnect the AC cord. When the cord is plugged in, a small amount of current continues to flow to the system, even
when the power is turned off.
• When there is lightning, immediately disconnect the unit from the AC outlet and never touch the antenna wire.

Note on moisture condensation

Moisture may condense inside the unit and cause damage to the unit and tape when the unit is moved from a cold to a warm place, after heating a cold room, or under conditions of high humidity. If any of the above conditions apply, place the unit in a well-ventilated area and wait for about two hours until the unit is warmed to room temperature and the moisture evaporates completely before operating the unit.

Maintenance

Professional periodic maintenance is
required to maintain the optimum performance of the unit. Maintenance and adjustments to internal components should not be done by the user. Please consult your dealer if you have any trouble with the unit.

Cleaning the unit

Wipe the cabinet clean using a damp soft cloth with diluted detergent. Never use thinner or benzine since they will damage the cabinet surface.

Cleaning the video heads

Although the unit cleans the video heads automatically, dirt may be accumulated after a long period of use. If the playback picture is blurred or noisy while the TV programs are received clearly, the video heads may be dirty. In this case, clean the video heads using a commercially available video head cleaning tape.

VCR
World Wide Video
This VGR has a digital converter system,
multi tuner, and auto voltage (100 - 240 V AC). You can use this VCR in any country, record a TV program in different color systems from the received one, and playback a tape recorded using a different color system.
One-Touch Piayback
The recorded TV programs with the timer can be played back quickly with One-Touch Playback.
MTS (Multichannel TV Sound) broadcast
You can receive, record, and play back stereo and bilingual TV programs.
Shuttle Ring and Jog Dial
High speed and slow motion playback in various speeds can be done with the shuttle ring. Frame-by-frame playback in various speeds is at your command with the jog dial.

Connecting the VCR

1 Disconnect the antenna cable from
your TV and connect it to AERIAL of TUNER #2 on this VCR.
If the cable Is a round-type 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect it directly to AERIAL.

To Connect a TV using an audio/video cable

If your TV has the audio/video input jacks, you can connect the VCR and TV using the supplied audio/video cable. This connection improves the picture and sound quality.

1 Connect the cable from the CATV system to the 2-way
splitter.
2 Connect one of the output of the splitter to the input of the
CATV converter, and the other to the A/B switch.
3 Connect the output on the converter to AERIAL of TUNER
#2 on this VCR.
4 Set TUNER SELECT to #2.
Change the TUNER SELECT only when power is turned off. When you change TUNER SELECT with the power turned on, the power will be cut off.
5 Connect RF OUT of TUNER #2 on this VCR to the A/B
switch using the suppiied antenna cabie.
6 Connect the MB switch to the antenna connector on your
TV.
7 Connect AC inlet of the VCR and the AC outlet with the
supplied AC cord.

Preparing the remote control

Insert the two supplied R6 (size AA) batteries. Be sure to match O and © on the batteries to the diagram
inside the battery holder.

. • Do not mix a new battery with an old one.
• Do not mix different kinds of batteries.
• Remove the batteries when they have no more power, or when you do not use the remote control for a long period of time.

When a TV is connected with an antenna
cable only
When the TV is connected to the RF OUT using a supplied
antenna cable only, set TUNER #2 to 3 CH or 4 QH, not employed for broadcasts, and select the same channel on
the TV.

To select a desired TV channel on the TV

Turn the TV and VCR then press TV/VCR to turn off “VCR” in the display window, or turn off this VCR.

To see a TV program or video program selected on the VCR

Turn the TV and VCR on, and press TVA/CR to display “VCR” in the display window.

When a TV is connected with an audio/ video cable

When the TV is connected using an audio/video cable, set TUNER #2 to CFF, then turn the TV and VCR on, and select the video input mode on the TV.
Point the remote control toward REMCTE SENSCR.
• The remote control may not operate when there is any
obstruction between the remote control and REMCTE SENSOR.
• Strong ambient light sources such as a fluorescent lamp or
direct sunlight may cause unreliable operation.
• Using a TV with the same type of infrared remote control
facing the same direction may cause incorrect operation.
• The maximum distance for effective control between the
remote control and REMOTE SENSOR is 7 meters.
• Although you can use the remote control within an angle of up to 30 degrees in any direction from directly in front of
REMOTE SENSOR, we recommend a narrower angle for
stable operation.

To correct the digits while setting
Before pressing OK in step 5 on page 7, press ▲ to select
, the item you wish to correct. Reset the digits using

• When the power supply is interrupted for more than 1 hour, the clock setting is cleared. In this case, you have to set the clock again.
• You can change the time indication from a 12 hour format to a 24 hour format. See “Charging the VCR setup” on page 26.
• It you change the DAYLIGHT SAVING or hours and press OK, the clock is not run. Change the minutes and press OK and then the clock is beginning to run.

Setting the VCR channels

This convenient Channel Auto Set function can preset up to
125 channels in your area (VHP channels 2 to 13 and UHF
channels 14 to 69, or CATV channels 1 to 125).

If Channel Auto Set does not set the VCR channel correctly, add them manually for recording TV programs. Also, you can erase the unnecessary VCR channels.

Check the antenna connections and repeat from step 1. If you still cannot receive the channels, set the VCR
channels manually. See “Adding or erasing VCR channels
manually.” on the right. (Presetting the VCR channels is necessary for recording TV programs.)

Even if you erase or add channels, the picture does not

This player is compatible with all three VHS systems: NTSC,
PAL, and SECAM color systems. The system is determined by the country of use where ordinary VCR support only one or two systems, this player supports all three.
Furthermore, this VCR supports the MESECAM system, which converts signals to and from the SECAM system and the PAL system for video playback and recording.
Example
If you receive a movie cassette from your friend in the PAL area, you can view it on a TV in the United States (NTSC color system).

PAL area can also enjoy the video.

Duplicating a tape recorded in a different color system

Example

• If you duplicate an American movie (NTSC color system)
using the PAL color system, your friend in the PAL area can enjoy the movie on the duplicated tape.
• If you duplicate a tape recorded in the PAL color system
using the NTSC color system, you can watch the duplicated tape on a TV in United States (NTSC color system).

If a tape which is repeatedly dubbed, or specially copy-protected, or recorded with out -of-spec signals, is played
back, or any off-spec signal is input into the VIDEO IN jack, the color system converter my malfunction and cause picture deformation.
OUTPUT SYSTEM (NTSC, PAL, SECAM, M-PAL, N-PAL)

Press the OUTPUT SYSTEM button corresponding to the color system of your TV.

The Output System Indicator of the output system you selected appears in the display window.

Z Start playback.

The VCR selects the color system of the tape automatically, and converts it into the Output System you selected in step 1. For details of playback, see page 14.

If the picture has an abnormal color

Check the color system setting. See “ Setting the color system” on page 25.
The picture may appear noisy or lack color for a few moment if you playback a video on a different system from the output system you selected.

Although the VCR adjusts the tracking automatically, you may need to adjust the tracking manually if the tape quality is too poor. While the VCR is adjusting the tracking automatically, “A
TR” (Automatic Tracking) flashes in the display window. It
lights steadily after the adjustment is complete.

If “A-TR” keeps flashing for some time, try manual tracking.

To adjust the tracking manually

During playback, press TRACKING +/- repeatedly until you get the best possible picture. (Automatic Tracking is canceled and “A-TR” goes off.)

To return to automatic tracking

The VCR automatically marks an index signal on the tape
each time recording starts. “INDEX” flashes on the TV screen while the VCR marks an index signal. You can use
these signals to find the beginning of any recording.
Press SEARCH/INDEX (for succeeding programs) or SEARCH/INDEX (for preceding programs) repeatedly during stop until the index number (up to 20) you want appears on the TV screen.
The VCR starts searching.

• Index signals may not be detected on damaged or worn out tapes.

Using One-Touch Playback after timer recording (see page
19) is convenient. You can make timer recordings and play back only the portion you just recorded with the timer by pressing a single button later.

You can immediately start recording the current channel for a specified time with One-Touch Recording.

• Insert a cassette with its erasure prevention tab in place. Make sure the tape is longer than the recording time.
• Check that the REC SYSTEM button corresponding to thè color system in which you want to record is pressed.
• Select the channel to record and tape speed.

Second Audio Program (SAP)

This VCR can record and piay back a Second Audio

Audio track system

This VCR records a regular monaural audio signal on the normal audio track, and stereo Hi-Fi audio signal on the Hi Fi audio track. If you use the VCR equipped with the VHS Hi-Fi audio sound system to play back the tape recorded on this VCR, you can enjoy stereo Hi-Fi sound or bilingual program. Using the VCR in other country

Connecting the VCR

This VCR can be used in every country other then France. If you want to use the VCR in a PAL or SECAM area, connect the VCR and TV as foliows.
Be sure to attach a suitabie adaptor plug to the plug end of the AC cord. Adaptor plugs may be obtained at nominal cost from an authorized AIWA dealer.

1 Disconnect the antenna from your TV --------------------------Audio/video cable_(supplied|
and connect it to AERIAL of TUNER #1 5 on this VCR.

2 Connect the optional antenna cable to RF OUT of TUNER #1 on the VCR and
the antenna connector on your TV.

3 Set TUNER SELECT to #1.

Change the TUNER SELECT only when power is turned off. When you change TUNER SELECT with the power turned on, the power will be cut off. When you select #1, the tuner switches to monaural.

4 Set TUNER #1 to select the tuner system, B/G, D/K, or I, according to your area.

5 If your TV has the audio/video input jacks, connect the VCR and TV using the
supplied audio/video cable.

6 Connect AC inlet of the VCR and the AC outlet with the supplied AC cord.

Before starting

In PAL area, check that REC SYSTEM-PAL and OUTPUT SYSTEM-PAL on the VCR are pressed. In SECAM area, check that REC SYSTEM-SECAM/ MESECAM and OUTPUT SYSTEM-SECAM on the VCR are pressed.
1 Press POWER to turn on the VCR. 2 Turn on the TV and select the TV channel
position you want to use for VCR playback.
When you move to a different country, perform the Channel Auto Set again. The VCR can preset up to 100 channels in PAL or SECAM area.

3 Tune the TV so that the aiwa blue picture
appears clearly on the TV screen.
Refer to the TV operating instructions for tuning.
4 Press POWER to turn off the VCR.
Now the output from the VCR is tuned to this channel. Whenever you want to play back a tape, select this channel position.

If you cannot get a clear picture in step 3

Change the RF channel to another channel which does not
receive any station signal between 30 and 39 (the default is channel 36) by turning the CHANNEL selector with a screwdriver. Then repeat the above procedure from step 1. Consult your dealer if you have any trouble with this adjustment.

border areas, choose the same REC system which is being
broadcasted.

Troubleshooting

If the unit does not seem to operate properly, read the instructions again, then check the table below.

The POWER button does not operate.

Make sure the AC cord is connected securely.

The playback picture is noisy.

• Make sure the TV is set to the video channel or video input.
• Adjust the tracking manually when the tape quality is poor.
• Although the unit cleans the video heads automatically, dirt
may be accumulated after a long period of use. Clean the video heads with a commercially available video heads cleaning tape.
• Make sure all the connections with the VCR are made correctly and securely.

The playback picture has abnormal color.

Set the color system correctly.

There is no playback picture.

Set the TV to the video channel or video input.

TV reception is noisy or there is no TV reception.

• Connect the VCR to the antenna and TV correctly and
securely.
• Move the VCR away from the TV set.
• Make sure the output system is set correctly.
D If you want to preset other TV stations, repeat
steps 3 through 4 until all the required stations are set.

6 Press OK to return to the normal screen.

To erase a preset channel

After step 2 above, press CHANNEL yV/N/" to select the channel you want to erase. And press A to move the cursor
(F ) to MEMORY, then press ► to select ERASE. Press
OK to return to the normal screen.

If you know the frequency band of the TV station you want to preset, press CLEAR repeatedly to select it by selecting VL (VHF-Low), VH (VHF-High), or U (UHF) in step 3.

• You must connect the Audio/Video cable to the TV. You cannot watch videos if the VCR is connected to the TV using the antenna cable only.
• You must set TUNER#2 to “off” on the rear panel.
• TV program reception and output will be monaural.
• When you set the VCR channel, see page 8 “Setting the VCR channel”. *
Tape operation buttons do not work while the power is
on and the cassette is inserted.
Moisture condensation may have occurred. Wait for about two hours until moisture evaporates completely before you operate the VCR.

Abnormal operation has occurred.

External interference may have affected the internal microprocessor. Disconnect the AC cord from the AC outlet. Then connect it again.

The remote control does not operate.

Replace both batteries with new ones.

There is no sound.

Connect the VCR correctly and securely.

The timer does not operate.

Set the VCR clock correctly.

There is no sound from an input source.

You may have selected the wrong input. Press INPUT until you select the correct input source, (e.g. You must select “LINE 2” when you connect an input source to the AUDIO IN L/R jacks on the front panel.)
