User Accounts
The User Accounts configuration allows you to create and define voice users of the
Total Access 900 Series Product Systems. User Accounts must be created for every voice user
(or client) connected to the system. The User Accounts provide vital information (first and last
names, extension number, and description) that uniquely identifies individual users.
Configuring the User Codec List
A codec list defines an ordered set of preferred codecs to use when engaging in a voice call.
When placing a call, the SIP server examines the user’s codec list and attempts to use the first
codec in the list with the receiving party. If the first codec negotiation is unsuccessful, the calling
party’s second codec is used.
1. Start a VT100 terminal session to connect to your unit. If you need assistance, follow the
steps in the Total Access 900 Series Quick Configuration Guide (document number
61210916L1-42.1).
2. Enter enable at the initial command prompt to access the Privilege command mode.
3. Enter configure terminal to access the Global Configuration mode.
4. Enter voice codec-list Users
and the SIP trunk.
5. Enter codec g711ulaw
Note: The first codec entered automatically becomes the primary codec.
6. Enter codec g729
7. Enter exit to return to the Global Configuration mode.
to set G.711 µ-law as the primary codec to be allowed for negotiation.
to set G.729 as the secondary codec to be allowed for negotiation.
to create a named codec-list for call negotiation between users

Configuring User Accounts
Now that the codec list is defined, individual users can be configured. Each user is assigned to a
connection, a codec group, and a trunk. Users are also assigned a first and last name, and other
call settings. For this example, we will assign Jane Doe to extension 2501 on FXS port 0/2.
1. Verify that the prompt of your unit displays (config)#.
2. Enter voice user 2501
, to configure extension 2501 for this user. Each extension must be
unique and cannot begin with a “0” or “1”.
3. Enter connect fxs 0/2
4. Enter codec-group Users
to link the physical port with this user.
to enable the user’s codec list (created in the setup on the
previous page).
5. Enter register trunk T02 username word
password word to register the user with SIP
trunk T02 (The SIP trunk must be created first; refer to the SIP Trunk Configuration Guide,
61210916L1-29.1). The username and password are optional. If set, the username and
password will override any previous defined SIP trunk username and password.
6. Enter first-name Jane
to input the user’s first name. Enter last-name Doe to input the user’s
last name. The user’s first and last name entries are used to identify the user as well as
provide caller-ID information for the analog port (fxs 0/2).
7. Enter call-waiting to enable the call waiting feature, which will alert you of an incoming call
while on the phone.
8. Enter vad to enable Voice Activity Detection, which has the capability to detect silence during
a call to reduce the bandwidth a call uses when not transmitting voice packets.
9. Enter end to exit the Global Configuration mode.
10. At the # prompt, enter copy running-config startup-config to save the running
configuration to the start-up configuration. The configuration must be saved to the unit’s
nonvolatile random access memory (NVRAM) to prevent the loss of configuration during a
power cycle.
