CHAPTER 1
Introducing the ZyXEL Device
This chapter introduces the main features and applications of the ZyXEL Device.
1.1 P-2302R-P1 VoIP ATA / Station Gateway Series Overview
The Prestige P-2302R-P1 VoIP (Voice over IP) station gateway lets you use traditional analog
telephones to make telephone calls over the Internet. The ZyXEL Device uses SIP (Session
Initiation Protocol), an internationally recognized standard for implementing VoIP.
You can call any landline or mobile telephone as well as IP telephones. You don’t need to
know if the recipient’s connection type is an IP, cellular or landline based service. Calls
received from IP telephones work exactly as you would expect from the traditional telephone
service.
The NAT and DHCP server features allow you to use an Ethernet hub or switch to set up a
private network and allow multiple computers to share a single Internet connection. The
ZyXEL Device also provides content filtering and a firewall for security.
The ZyXEL Device's web configurator allows easy management and configuration.
1.2 P-2302RL-P1 VoIP ATA / Station Gateway with PSTN Line
The P-2302RL-P1 has all of the features of the P-2302R-P1 and adds the PSTN (Public
Switched Telephone Network) line. A PSTN line lets you have VoIP phone service and PSTN
phone service at the same time.
Note: If the P-2302RL-P1 is turned off, you can only use the phone that is connected
to the PHONE1 port to make phone calls, regardless of the settings in any
screen. Make sure you know which phone this is, especially in case you want to
make an emergency call.
1.3 Features
Your ZyXEL Device is packed with a number of features that make it flexible and easy to use.

Firewall
The ZyXEL Device is a stateful inspection firewall with DoS (Denial of Service) protection.
By default, when the firewall is activated, all incoming traffic from the WAN to the LAN is
blocked unless it is initiated from the LAN. The ZyXEL Device firewall supports TCP/UDP
inspection, DoS detection and prevention, real time alerts, reports and logs.
Content Filtering
The ZyXEL Device can also block access to web sites containing keywords that you specify.
You can define time periods and days during which content filtering is enabled and include or
exclude a range of users on the LAN from content filtering.
Bandwidth Management
Bandwidth management allows you to allocate network resources according to defined
policies. This policy-based bandwidth allocation helps your network to better handle real-time
applications such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP).
SIP ALG
The ZyXEL Device is a SIP Application Layer Gateway (ALG). It allows VoIP calls to pass
through NAT for devices behind the ZyXEL Device (such as a SIP-based VoIP software
application on a computer).
Any IP
The Any IP feature allows a computer to access the Internet and the ZyXEL Device without
changing the network settings (such as IP address and subnet mask) of the computer, when the
IP addresses of the computer and the ZyXEL Device are not in the same subnet.
Bridge Mode
The ZyXEL Device can act as a bridge, instead of a router. This change should not require any
other changes in your existing network.
10/100Mbps Auto-negotiating Fast Ethernet Interfaces
The auto-negotiation feature allows the ZyXEL Device to detect the speed of incoming
transmissions and adjust appropriately without manual intervention. It allows data transfer of
either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps in either half-duplex or full-duplex mode depending on your
Ethernet network.
Auto-crossover 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Interfaces
The Ethernet interfaces automatically adjust to either a crossover or straight-through Ethernet
cable.
