The MJK 703 Pump Controller is a compact unit designed for the control of liquid levels in 2-3 pumps or valves between four variable level settings. The Pump Controller has 3-digit continuous display of level measurements.

If hydrostatic measuring system is applied (703P), the pump controller is delivered with a pressure transmitter for either absolute or relative pressure. At absolute pressure transmitter type 7050 measures the hydrostatic pressure in the liquid (at the bottom). The amplifier has a build-in pressure compensation.

The ultrasonic sensor has a moulded-in piezoelectric crystal which emits an ultrasonic signal and receives an echo signal from the surface measured. The amplifier converts the signals received from the sensor to a levelproportional signal which is used for display of level values and for maximum and minimum level monitoring within the six limit settings.
At relative pressure transmitter type 7060 is used, this transmitter has a tube for pressure equalizing. The measured bottom pressure is equalized with the surface pressure via the tube, and the transmitter directly measures the correct liquid pressure. The 4-20 mA signal from the transmitter is sent to the amplifier, where the level is indicated and the start / stop / alarm signals are processed.
When measuring in pressure tanks, the maximal pressure (super-pressure + liquid pressure) must not exceed the range of the connected transmitter.

OperationOperation
Operation
OperationOperation
The Pump Controller is operated by means of a display selector which can be set to a number of positions for the reading of level values during operation, as well as for resetting. The Controller is designed for continuous operation - also during calibration - so the selector cannot be „forgotten“ in a calibrating position thereby disturbing or spoiling the control action.
Start and stop levelsStart and stop levels
Start and stop levels
Start and stop levelsStart and stop levels
Set the start, stop and alarm levels by turning the selector switch to the desired position, and adjust the relevant potentiometer. Note: To obtain the best accuracy when adjusting, the potentiometer settings are relative to the chosen 0-level (for ultrasonic measurig systems) or range (for hydrostatic measuring systems) If the 0-level/range is set for e.g. 3 m, the range for start/ stop and alarms will be limited to 0 - 2.25 m (ultrasonic) or 0 - 3 m (hydrostatic). The amplifier has logic for both filling and emptying. When the starting levels are set lower than the stopping levels, the pumping action will be filling. When the starting levels are set higher than the stopping levels, it will be emptying. This logic prevents dry pumping in the event of failure.
the alarm indicator for ERROR will be lit. When an error is detected, the pump controller will prevent the pumps from running. The detected error can be set to activate one of the output relays, see futher in section "Selection of output signals".

If the measurement exceeds the measuring range, the amplifier will indicate that the measuring range has been exceeded by showing three lit-up points in the display e.g.: „0.5.6.“

A three-pole switch for coding of the output signals and three potentiometers for time delay adjustment are located on the back of the top circuit board.

The alternation selector is set to „NORMAL“ or „ALTERNATING“ as desired. In the „NORMAL“ position the „level 1“ settings will control pump no. 1 and the „level 2“ settings will control pump no.
2. In the „ALTERNATING“ position „level 1“ will control pump no. 1 and pump no. 2 alternately, and „level 2“ will act in reverse.

The setpoints for high and low alarm are adjusted as follows: Turn the display selector to „level 3 high“ or „level 4 low“ as required, and turn the relevant potentiometer until the desired level is displayed. For low alarm, the alarm starts at the setpoint and disconnects approx. 1% above the setpoint. Similarly, the high alarm begins at the setpoint, and ceases approx. 1% belove it. The two alarm relays are active for normal levels, and idle during alarm. The relays may instead be connected to the echo failure circuit by means of the changeover switches mentioned in section "Setting of output signals".

Set the changeover switch located on the underside of the top circuit to 0-20 or 4-20 mA (standard setting at delivery 4-20 mA). Set the selector switch to „mA OUTPUT“. Then, by means of the mA OUTPUT SPAN potentiometer, set the output current in per cent of 0-20/4-20 mA corresponding to the value measured at the time.

The sensor is mounted near the top of the well or container where no tubes or cables obstruct the path between the sensor and the surface of the liquid. The maximum distance between the sensor and the surface of the liquid must not exceed 10 m. The best performance is obtained by placing the sensor 1 m above the maximum level desired (high alarm level). The sensor should be positioned at precisely perpendicular to the liquid surface (using a spirit level). There must allways be at least 75 cm from max level to the bottom of the sensor.
Where a sensor is mounted above an obstruction ex. a concrete deck, we recommend that it should be installed as shown below:

Setting of zero levelSetting of zero level
Set the selector switch to „ZERO LEVEL“. Measure the distance from the lower edge of the sensor to the bottom of the pump well and set this in centimetres on the ZERO LEVEL potentiometer. If the well is empty, the following method may be used: Set the selector switch to position „LEVEL“. The sensor will then be working against the bottom of the empty well. The ZERO LEVEL potentiometer is now set to zero. To check this setting, turn the selector switch to „ZERO LEVEL“ and read the distance to the bottom in centimetres as displayed.

Zero, span and response time
Zero, span and response timeZero, span and response time
The response time is set to minimum at delivery. When replacing the Pressure Transmitter or when using the MJK 703P for differential level measurement or measurements in pressure or vacuum tanks, it may be necessary to set the zero point as well as the span. The setting is carried out by simulating the zero point and the span. Depending on the use, it may also be necessary to reset the response time. If the Pump Controller is used for liquids with a specific gravity different from that of water (e.g. sludge), the span will need to be adjusted.
