The DM78A Digital Thermometer is warranted against any defects of material or
workmanship within a period of one (1) year following the date of purchase of the
multimeter by the original purchaser or original user.

Any multimeter claimed to be defective during the warranty period should be
returned with proof of purchase to an authorized Wavetek Meterman Service Center
or to the local Wavetek Meterman dealer or distributor where your multimeter was
purchased. See maintenance section for details.

Any implied warranties arising out of the sale of a W

multimeter, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and
fitness for a particular purpose, are limited in duration to the above stated one (1)
year period. Wavetek Meterman shall not be liable for loss of use of the multimeter
or other incidental or consequential damages, expenses, or economical loss or for
any claim or claims for such damage, expenses or economical loss.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long implied warranties last or the
exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above
limitations or exclusions may not apply to you.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights
which vary from state to state.

■ This instrument is EN61010-1 certified for Installation Category II. It is
recommended for use with appliances, portable equipment, etc, where only
smaller transient overvoltages may occur, and not for primary supply lines,
overhead lines and cable systems. Do not use on electrical mains. ■ Do not
exceed the maximum overload limits per function (see specifications) nor the
limits marked on the instrument itself. ■ Exercise extreme caution when:
measuring voltage >20V // servicing CRT equipment. ■ Inspect DMM, test
leads and accessories before every use. Do not use any damaged part. ■
Never ground yourself when taking measurements. Do not touch exposed
circuit elements or probe tips. ■ Do not operate instrument in an explosive

MEASURING PROCEDURES

GENERAL
Ranging: The meter defaults to autoranging when turned on, and

selects the range automatically. For Manual Ranging: press “Range
Lock” Button to hold selected range ( on the display ) Pressing
“Range Lock” again steps to next range. Hold button for 2 sec. to
return to Autorange mode.

Data Hold: Press the “Data Hold” Button to toggle in (“H”
displayed) and out of mode. Last reading is held on the display.
Press button again to release and display present readings.

Selector Switch. When the Selector Switch is in the
position, press the Function Button to step between resistance,
continuity test ( and Ω displayed),and diode test ( ). When
the Selector Switch is in VOLTS position, press the Function Button
to step between AC voltage and DC voltage.

D • Meßprozeduren
ALLGEMEIN

Bereichswahl: Das DM78 ist ein Meßgerät mit automatischer

Bereichswahl. Durch die “Range Lock” Taste zu drücken, können Sie
den gewählten Bereich festhalten ( erscheint in der Anzeige )
Erneutes Drücken der “Range Lock” Taste wählt den nächst höheren
Bereich. Taste 2 Sekunden lang drücken kehrt zum Autobereich zurück.

Anzeigesperre: “Data Hold” Taste drücken um die Funktion an- (“H”
angezeigt) und abzuwählen. Letzte Anzeige bleibt erhalten. Taste
erneut drücken um aktuelle Werte anzuzeigen.

Wahlschalter: Mit dem Wahlschalter in der Position, wählt
die Funktionstaste zwischen Widerstand, Durchgangstest ( und Ω
angezeigt), und Diodentest ( angezeigt). Mit dem Wahlschalter in
der VOLTS Position, wählt die Funktionstaste zwischen Gleich(DC)-
und Wechsel(AC)-Spannung.

E • Procedimientos de Medida

GENERAL

Escalas: Por defecto, el medidor se pone en modo de selección automática de
escala al encenderlo. Para selección manual de escala: pulse la tecla “Range
Lock” (bloqueo de escala) para fijar la escala seleccionada ( en el

visualizador). Pulsando de nuevo “Range Lock” se pasa a la siguiente escala.
Para volver a selección automática, pulse la tecla durante 2 segundos.

Retención de datos: Pulse la tecla “Data Hold” para entrar (“H” en el
visualizador) y salir de este modo. Pulse de nuevo la tecla para liberar la
retención y visualizar las medidas en tiempo real.

Selector de función. Con el selector de función en la posición ,
pulse la tecla “Function” para cambiar entre medidas de resistencia,
continuidad (aparece y Ω) y prueba de diodos (aparece ). Con el
selector de función en la posición VOLTS, pulse la tecla Function para cambiar
entre tensión CA (AC) tensión CC (DC).

F • Procédures de Mesure
GENERAL

Sélection de gammes: Le DM78 est un instrument à sélection

automatique de gammes. Pendant le mesure, pressez le bouton
“Range Lock” pour maintenir le calibre actuel ( affiché ). Pressez
“Range Lock” à nouveau pour sélectionner le calibre suivant. Pressez
“Range Lock” pendant 2 secondes pour retourner en sélection
automatique.

Maintien de Lecture: Pressez bouton “Data Hold” pour sélectionner
(“H” affiché) et désélectionner. La dernière mesure est maintenue.
Pressez “Data Hold” à nouveau pour désactiver et afficher les valeurs
actuelles.

Sélecteur: Avec le sélecteur en position , le bouton de
fonctions choisit séquentiellement entre résistance, test de continuité
( et Ωaffichés), et test de diodes ( affiché). Avec le sélecteur
en position VOLTS, le bouton de fonctions choisit entre tension DC
(CC) et tension AC (CA).

DC VOLTAGE MEASUREMENT

Warning: For safety, do not attempt to measure voltages greater
than 450VDC.

❶ Set Selector Switch to VOLTS. ❷ If “AC” appears in display,
press Function Button to select DC.
❸ Connect black test lead to negative side of circuit being
measured and red lead to positive side. ❹ Read value on display.

verbinden – schwarz negative Seite, rot positive Seite. ❹Meßwert

E • Medidas de Tension CC

Advertencia: Por razones de seguridad, no intente medir tensiones superiores
a 450 VCC.

Ponga el selector de función en VOLTS.❷Si aparece “AC” en el
visualizador, pulse la tecla Function para seleccionar DC. ❸Conecte la punta
de prueba negra al lado negativo del circuito que vaya a medir, y la roja al lado
positivo. ❹Lea el valor en el visualizador.

F • Mesure de Tension Continue

Danger: Ne mesurez pas de tension dépassant 450Vcc.

Placéz le sélecteur en position VOLTS. ❷Si “AC” est affiché,
pressez bouton de fonctions pour afficher “DC”. ❸Connectez le
cordon noir au côté négatif et le cordon rouge au côté positif du
circuit. ❹Lisez la valeur.

AC VOLTAGE MEASUREMENT

RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT

Warning: Before taking any in-circuit resistance measurements,
remove power to the circuit being tested and discharge all
capacitors in the circuit.

❶ Set Selector Switch to . ❷ Press Function Button until
O.L. and MΩ appear on display. ❸Connect test leads to circuit. ❹
Read value on the display.

E • Medidas de Resistencia

CONTINUITY TEST

❶ Set the Selector Switch to . ❷ Push the Function
Button until appears in disp!ay. ❸ Connect test leads to the
circuit. Buzzer sounds when resistance is < 20Ω.

D • Durchgangsprüfung

❶

Wahlschalter auf stellen. ❷Funktionstaste drücken bis

angezeigt wird.

❸

Meßkabel mit Schaltkreis verbinden. Summton

bei < 20Ω.

E • Prueba de Continuidad

❶

Ponga el selector de función en .❷ Pulse la tecla Function
hasta que aparezca en el visualizador. ❸ Conecte las puntas de prueba al
circuito. El zumbador suena cuando la resistencia es <20 W.

F • Test de Continuité

❶

Placez le sélecteur sur . ❷Pressez le bouton de
fonctions pour afficher . ❸Connectez les cordons au circuit.
Signal sonore quand < 20Ω.

DIODE TEST

The diode should be disconnected from circuit. Required forward
voltage must be <1V.
❶ Set Selector Switch to . ❷ Push Function Button until

appears in display. ❸ Connect black test lead to anode and
red test lead to cathode of the diode and note the reading. ❹
Reverse test lead connections on diode. If the diode is good,
display will read half the value of step 3.

D • Diodentest

Dioden sollen vom Schaltkreis entfernt sein. Benötigte Vorwärts-
spannung soll <1V sein.

angezeigt wird. ❸Schwarzes Meßkabel mit Anode und rotes mit
Kathode verbinden. Meßwert notieren. ❹Schwarzes Meßkabel mit
Kathode und rotes mit Anode verbinden. Bei guter Diode ist Ablesung
ungefähr 50% von notierter Ablesung.

E • PRUEBA DE DIODOS

El diodo debe estar desconectado del circuito. Es necesaria una tensión directa
<1 V.

❶

Ponga el selector de función en . ❷ Pulse la tecla Function
hasta que aparezca en el visualizador. ❸ Conecte la punta de prueba
negra al ánodo del diodo, y la roja al cátodo. Tome nota de la lectura. è Invierta
la conexión de las puntas de prueba al diodo. Si el diodo está bien, el
visualizador indicará la mitad del valor obtenido en el paso 3.

F • Mesure de Diodes

La diode doit être enlevée du circuit. La tension en direction passante
doit être <1V.

Placez sélecteur sur . ❷Pressez le bouton de fonctions
pour afficher . ❸Connectez le cordon noir à l’anode et le cordon
rouge à la cathode. Notez la lecture. ❹Inversez la connection. Pour
une bonne diode la lecture est approx. 50% de la lecture précédente.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Power is supplied by two button-type batteries (NEDA 1166A or IEC
LR-44). “B” appears on the LCD display when replacement is
needed.

Warning: Before attempting to replace the battery, first disconnect
the test leads from any energized circuit.

❶ Set Function Switch to Off ❷ Remove battery cover screw ❸
Slide off battery cover, note polarity, and change batteries ❹
Replace battery cover and screw.

D • Batterieaustausch

Speisung erfolgt durch zwei Knopfbatterien (NEDA 1166A oder IEC
LR-44). Bei entladener Batterie wird “B” angezeigt.

Warnung: Meßkabel vor Öffnen des Gerätes vom Schaltkreis

entfernen.

Wahlschalter auf OFF stellen ❷Schraube des Batteriefachdeckels

entfernen ❸ Deckel abziehen, Polarität notieren, Batterien ersetzen

❹

Batteriefachdeckel anbringen.

E • Sustitución de las Pilas

El instrumento utiliza dos pilas de tipo botón (NEDA 1166A o IEC LR-44).
Cuando es necesario cambiar las pilas aparece “B” en el visualizador.
Advertencia: Antes de intentar cambiar las pilas, desconecte siempre las
puntas de prueba de cualquier circuito con alimentación.

Ponga el selector de función en Off. ❷Quite el tornillo de la tapa del
compartimento de las pilas. ❸ Extraiga la tapa deslizándola, observe la
polaridad y cambie las pilas. ❹Vuelva a cerrar la tapa apretando el tornillo.

F • Remplacement de la pile

Le DM78 est alimenté par deux piles-bouton (NEDA 1166A ou IEC
LR-44). Quand les piles sont déchargées, “B” est affiché.

Danger: Avant de remplacer les piles, déconnectez les cordons du
circuit.

Placez les sélecteur sur OFF ❷Enlevez la vis du couvercle ❸ Faites

glisser le couvercle, notez la polarité et changez les piles

❹

Remplacez les piles et replacez le couvercle.
