Charger overview
1 – Charging pole
Connect
Use only the adapters provided.
• Even if you do not subscribe to any conventional
• telephone service, you can pair a Bluetooth enabled cell phone to your telephone base (see Bluetooth), and use the cell line alone without plugging in a telephone line cord.
The adapters are intended for a vertical or floor
• mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-the-table, or cabinet outlet.
If you subscribe to digital subscriber line (DSL)
• high-speed Internet service through your telephone line, make sure you install a DSL filter (not included) between the telephone line cord and telephone wall jack. Contact your DSL service provider for more information.

Tabletop to wall mount installation
The telephone comes ready for tabletop use. If you have already installed the telephone for tabletop use, unplug the telephone line cord from the telephone wall jack, and unplug the telephone base power adapter from the wall outlet before mounting your telephone on a wall. Follow the steps below to mount your telephone on a wall.
1. Press down on the tabs on the wall mount bracket on the telephone base to release it from tabletop orientation.
2. Rotate the wall mount bracket down to wall mount position and then push it into the telephone base until it clicks into place.
3. Plug the telephone line cord (or DSL filter) into the wall jack. Align the holes on the back of the telephone base with the standard wall plate. Slide the bracket down until it clicks securely in place. Connect the power adapter to the telephone base and an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.
4. Slide the telephone base down until it clicks securely in place. Bundle the telephone line cord and power adapter cord neatly with twist ties if necessary.
Before use
After you install your telephone or power returns following a power outage, the handset or telephone will prompt you to set the date and time.
If you choose to set up the date and time at a later stage, you can do it manually.
Set date and time
Make sure you set the date and time including
• the year correctly; otherwise the answering system does not announce the correct day of the week for your recorded messages time stamp.

and minute. Scroll to choose AM or PM, and then

press SAVE to save.
IMPORTANT:
Check for a dial tone by pressing /HOME. If you hear a dial tone, the installation is successful.
If you do not hear a dial tone:
Make sure the installation procedures
• described above are properly done.
It may be a wiring problem. If you have
• changed your telephone service to digital service from a cable company or a VoIP service provider, the telephone line may need to be rewired to allow all existing telephone jacks to work. Contact your cable/ VoIP service provider for more information.
Operating range
This cordless telephone operates with the maximum power allowed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Even so, this handset and telephone base can communicate over only a certain distance
- which can vary with the locations of the
telephone base and handset, the weather, and the layout of your home or office.
When the handset is out of range, the handset displays Out of range OR no power at base and Put HS on base to power base alternately.
If there is a call while the handset is out of range, it may not ring, or if it does ring, the call may not connect well when you press
/HOME, /CELL 1, or /CELL 2. Move
closer to the telephone base, and then press
/HOME, /CELL 1, or /CELL 2 to answer the call. If the handset moves out of range during a telephone conversation, there may be interference. To improve reception, move closer to the telephone base.
Bluetooth
To use a Bluetooth enabled cell phone or headset with your DS6291, you must first pair and connect your Bluetooth cell phone or headset with the telephone base.
Bluetooth wireless technology operates within a short range (a maximum of approximately 30 feet). When you pair a Bluetooth cell phone to the telephone base, place your Bluetooth cell phone closer to the telephone base to maintain sufficient signal strength.
For optimal performance, keep your cell phone within 15 feet of the telephone base while using the cell line.
Pair and connect your Bluetooth enabled cell phone
Press MENU on the telephone base when idle.
1. Press CALLER ID / or PHONEBOOK /
2. to scroll to Bluetooth, and then press
SELECT .
Press SELECT to choose Add device.
3. Press SELECT to choose Add cellular.
4. Disconnect your cell phone from any
5. Bluetooth device, and then press NEXT.
Place your cell phone next to the telephone
6. base, and then press NEXT.
Turn on the Bluetooth feature of your cell
7. phone and search for or add new devices. Once your cell phone finds VTech DS6291, press the appropriate key on your cell phone to continue the pairing process.
Enter the PIN of your cell phone if
• required. The PIN for most Bluetooth devices is 0000 (refer to the user’s manual of your cell phone), and then press SELECT.
When the cell phone is connected to the telephone base, the corresponding status icon (1 or 2) displays when idle. The corresponding device light (CELL 1 or CELL 2/HEADSET ) turns on.
If the pairing fails, turn off the Bluetooth feature on your cell phone. Then repeat the steps above to pair and connect again. In some cases, it may take you a few attempts to complete the pairing process.
Pair and connect your Bluetooth enabled headset
Press MENU on the telephone base when idle.

Disconnect your headset from any

6. Set your headset to discoverable mode, and then press NEXT.

• necessary, and then press SELECT.
Enter the PIN of your headset if required.
• The PIN for most Bluetooth devices is 0000 (refer to the user’s manual of your headset), and then press SELECT.
When the headset is successfully paired and connected to the telephone base, the 2 icon displays. The CELL 2/HEADSET light turns on.

This application helps you integrate your Android phones with your DS6291.

Download contacts from your Bluetooth cell phone
Press MENU on the telephone base when idle.
1. Scroll to Bluetooth, and then press SELECT.
2. Scroll to Download dir, and then press SELECT.
3. Scroll to choose among Phone memory,
4. SIM card only, or Phone and SIM, and then press SELECT.
If you have downloaded contacts before,
• press NEXT to start downloading.
5. Press OK to exit when the download is completed.
For cer tain cell phones, you may need to press
a key on your cell phone to confirm the directory download.
The performance of directory download feature
depends on the compatibility of your Bluetooth cell phone. Refer to the user’s manual of your cell phone for more information about how that device uses Bluetooth connectivity.
Certain cell phones do not support SIM card
download. If this is the case, transfer the contacts from your SIM card to your cell phone memory first. Then download from your cell phone memory. For more information on how to transfer contacts from your SIM card to your cell phone memory, see the user’s manual of your cell phone.

Use the Clear voicemail feature when the telephone
• indicates there is new voicemail but there is none. For example, when you have accessed your voicemail while away from home. The Clear voicemail feature only turns off the indicators; it does not delete your voicemail messages. As long as you have new voicemail messages, your telephone service provider continues to send the signal that turns on the indicators.
When the CID time sync feature is on, the day,
• month, and time are set automatically with each incoming call if you subscribed to caller ID service.

Ringer volume (handset)
You can adjust the handset ringer volume level, or turn the ringer off.
Press MENU on the handset when idle.
1. Scroll to Ringers, and then press SELECT.

If the handset ringer volume is set to off, that handset is silenced for all incoming calls except paging tone.
Ringer volume (telephone base)

You can choose from different ringer tones.

Caller ID announce
The caller ID announce feature lets you know who’s calling without having to look at the display. When you have an incoming call, the handset speaks “Call from...” and the name of the caller based on the phonebook or caller ID information. If the caller’s name is private or unknown, the phone number up to the last 11 digits will be announced. If the caller’s phone number is also private or unknown, no information will be announced.

To use the caller ID announce feature, you must
subscribe to caller ID service from your telephone service provider.
When there are up to five handsets registered, the
telephone system supports caller ID announce for all handsets. If six or more handsets are registered, the system supports caller ID announce for the first
four registered handsets only.
Telephone operation
Make a home call
Press /HOME or , and then dial the
telephone number.

Enter the telephone number on the handset
or base, and then press /HOME or to dial.
Make a cell call
Press /CELL 1 or /CELL 2 on the
handset or base. Enter the telephone number, and then press DIAL to dial.

Enter the telephone number on the handset
or base, and then press /CELL 1 or
/CELL 2 to dial.
After first pressing /CELL 1 or /CELL 2, you may need to choose a cell device. Scroll to select the desired cell device when necessary, and
then press SELECT. While using the cell line, place your cell phone closer to the base, and make sure that there are no physical obstacles between the base and the cell phone, such as large furniture or thick walls.
Answer a home/cell call
Press /HOME, /CELL 1, /CELL 2, ,
• or any dialing key.
End a home/cell call
Press OFF on the handset, or put the handset
• to the base or charger.

Conference calls
When you have calls established on the home and/ or cell lines, you can create a 3-way conference.
To conference home and/or cell calls:
Press OPTION on the handset or telephone

To select an option during a conference:

Handset speakerphone
During a call, press on the handset to

Volume
During a call, press /VOLUME/ on the
• handset or /VOL/ on the telephone base to adjust the listening volume.
The volume settings of handset earpiece, handset speakerphone, and base speakerphone are independent.
Mute
The mute function allows you to hear the other party but the other party cannot hear you.
During a call, press MUTE on the handset

or telephone base. The screen displays Muted. Press MUTE again to resume the conversation.

Call waiting
When you subscribe to call waiting service from your telephone service provider, you hear an alert tone if there is an incoming call while you are on another call.
Call waiting on the home line:
Press FLASH to put the current call on hold
• and take the new call.
Press FLASH to switch back and forth
• between calls.
Call waiting on the cell line:
Press /CELL 1 or /CELL 2, to put the
• current call on hold and take the new call.
Press /CELL 1 or /CELL 2 to switch

Temporary ringer silencing
When the telephone is ringing, you can temporarily silence the ringer of the handset without disconnecting the call. The next call rings normally at the preset volume.
Press MUTE, MUTE, CANCEL, or on
• the handset or telephone base. The screen displays .
Temporary tone dialing
If you have pulse (rotary) service only, you can switch from pulse to tone dialing temporarily during a call.
During a call, press .

number. The telephone sends touch-tone signals. It automatically returns to pulse dialing mode after you end the call.
Find handset
Use this feature to find all system handsets.
To start paging:
Press /FIND HANDSET on the base. All
• idle handsets ring and display ** Paging **.
To mute paging:
Press MUTE, MUTE, CANCEL, or on
• the handset.
To end paging:
Press /FIND HANDSET or STOP on the base.
-OR-
Press /HOME, /CELL 1, /CELL 2, ,
• or any dialing key on the handset.
Do not press and hold /FIND HANDSET for more than four seconds. It may lead to handset deregistration.
Redial list
The base and each handset store the last 10 telephone numbers dialed. When there are already 10 entries, the oldest entry is deleted to make room for the new entry.
To review and dial a number from the redial list:
Press REDIAL on the handset or
1. telephone base when idle.
Scroll or press REDIAL repeatedly until the
2. desired entry displays.
Press /HOME, /CELL 1, /CELL 2, or

to dial.
To delete a redial entry:
When the desired redial entry displays, press
DELETE.
Join a call in progress
You can use up to four system handsets at a time on a home line call. You can buy additional expansion handsets for this telephone base. You can register up to 12 handsets to the telephone base.
When a device is on a home call, press
/HOME or on another device to join the call. Press OFF on the handset or /HOME on
the base to exit the call. The call continues until all devices hang up.
Push-to-talk (PTT)
You can directly broadcast messages from one device to the speakerphone of one or multiple devices.
To start a PTT communication:
Press PUSH TO TALK on the handset or
1. PTT on the base when idle.
Scroll to a desired device or Group, and
2. then press SELECT.
Only one device can talk at a time.
Press and hold PUSH TO TALK while you are
talking. Release PUSH TO TALK to let the other party respond.
Intercom
Use the intercom features for conversations between two devices.
Press MENU on then handset or telephone
1. base when idle.
Scroll to Intercom, and then press
2.
SELECT. Use the dialing keys to enter a
destination device number. To answer the intercom call, press
3.
/HOME, /CELL 1, /CELL 2, , or
any dialing key on the destination device. To end the intercom call, press END.
4.
Transfer a call
While on an outside call, you can use the intercom feature to transfer the call from one handset to another.
Press OPTION on the handset or
1. telephone base during a call.
Scroll to Intercom, and then press SELECT.
2. Use the dialing keys to enter a destination device number. The current call is put on hold.The current call is put on hold.
To answer the intercom call, press

/HOME, /CELL, /CELL 2, , or any dialing key on the destination handset. You can now have a private conservation before transferring the call.
To transfer the call, press OPTION on the
4. initiating device, and then press SELECT
to select Transfer.
Answer an incoming call during an intercom call
If you receive an incoming call during an intercom call, there is an alert tone.
To answer a home call, press /HOME. The
intercom call ends automatically. To end the intercom call without answering
the outside call, press BACK and then END. The intercom call ends and the telephone continues to ring.
To answer a cell call, presspress BACK and then
END to end the intercom call. The telephone
continues to ring. Then press /CELL.
Directory
The home directory stores up to 200 entries with up to 30 digits for each phone number and 15 characters for each name. Each of the downloaded directories stores up to 1,500 entries with up to 30 digits for each phone number and 15 characters for each name.
To add a directory entry:
Press MENU on the handset or telephone

Caller ID
This product supports caller ID services provided by most telephone service providers. Depending on your service subscription, you may see the caller’s name, number, date and time of calls that are sent by your telephone service provider after the first or second ring.
Caller ID log
The caller ID log stores up to 50 entries. If you answer a call before the caller information appears, it will not be saved in the caller ID log.
The screens display XX Missed calls when
• there are calls that have not been reviewed in the caller ID log.
If you want to erase the missed call indicator,
• press and hold CANCEL or press CID when idle.
To review and dial a number in the caller ID log:
Press CID or CALLER ID when idle.

About answering system and voicemail
For message recording, your telephone has a built-in answering system, and it also support voicemail service offered by your telephone service provider (subscription is required, and fee may apply).

Method to retrieve messages
When you received new messages,

Message playback at the telephone base
When you received a message on your answering system, displays on both the handset and telephone base,, XX New msgs displays on the handset, and XX New messages displays on the telephone base. To retrieve, press To retrieve, press
/PLAY when the phone is not in use. It can record up to 99 messages, depending
on the length of each message. Each message can be up to three minutes in length. The total recording time is approximately 14 minutes.
Options during playback:
Press /VOL/ to adjust the speaker volume.
Press /SKIP to skip to the next message.
Press /REPEAT to repeat the message
currently playing. Press /REPEAT twice to listen to the previous message.
Press X/DELETE to delete the playing
message. The system advances to the next message.
Press /STOP to stop.
Press /HOME, /CELL 1, or /CELL
2 to call back the caller if the message contains caller ID information. The telephone base screen displays Call back? with the caller ID information.
Press CALL to call back the caller.

Use the built-in answering system and voicemail service
You can use your answering system and voicemail service together by setting your answering system to answer before voicemail service answers as described below. To learn how to program your voicemail settings, contact your telephone service provider.
If you are on a call, or if the answering system is busy recording a message and you receive another call, the second caller can leave a voicemail message.
Set your answering system to answer calls at least two rings earlier than your voicemail service is set to answer. For example, if your voicemail service answers after six rings, set your answering system to answer after four rings. Some voicemail service providers may program the delay before answering calls in seconds instead of rings. In this case, allow six seconds per ring when determining the appropriate setting.
Retrieve voicemail from telephone service
Retrieve voicemail
When you received a voicemail, the handset displays and New voicemail. To retrieve, you typically dial an access number provided by your telephone service provider, and then enter a security code. Contact your telephone service provider for instructions on how to configure the
voicemail settings and listen to messages.

Add and register a handset
You can add new cordless handsets, DECT 6.0 cordless headsets or speakerphones to your telephone system (purchased separately). Visit www.vtechphones.com for a list of compatible devices. Your telephone system supports a maximum of 12 devices.
Additional devices registered to the telephone system are assigned numbers in the sequential order. Register each device with the telephone base before use.
When first purchased and properly charged, each expansion handset shows To register HS, see manual. Charge the handset before registering it toCharge the handset before registering it to the telephone base.
To register a DECT 6.0 cordless headset or speakerphone to this telephone system, please refer to the user’s manual of the respective product for more details. To register a cordless handset, see below.
To register a handset:
Place the new /non-registered handset in the
• telephone base. The handset and telephone base show Registering... Please wait.
The handset and telephone base show HANDSET X Registered and you hear a beep when the registration process completes. The registration process takes about 90 seconds to complete.
Deregister all devices
To replace a handset or reassign the designated handset number of a registered handset, you must deregister all devices and then individually register each handset.
To deregister all devices:

Immediately press /FIND HANDSET again

This power conserving technology reduces power consumption for optimal battery performance. The ECO mode activates automatically whenever the
handset is synchronized with the telephone base.
General product care
Taking care of your telephone
Your cordless telephone contains sophisticated electronic parts, so it must be treated with care.
Avoid rough treatment
Place the handset down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your telephone if you ever need to ship it.
Avoid water
Your telephone can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use the handset outdoors in the rain, or handle it with wet hands. Do not install the telephone base near a sink, bathtub or shower.
Electrical storms
Electrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful to electronic equipment. For your own safety, take caution when using electrical appliances during storms.
Cleaning your telephone
Your telephone has a durable plastic casing that should retain its luster for many years. Clean it only with a dry non-abrasive cloth. Do not use dampened cloth or cleaning solvents of any kind.
Storage
When you are not going to use the handset for some time, remove the rechargeable battery from the handset. Store the handset, the charger and the
adapter in a cool and dry place.

My telephone does not work at all.
The display shows No home line. I cannot get a dial tone.
I cannot add and connect my cell phone or headset to the telephone base.
Make sure the telephone base is installed properly, and battery is installed and charged correctly. For optimum daily performance, return the handset to the telephone base after use.
Make sure the handset has registered to the telephone base.
Disconnect the telephone line cord from your telephone and connect it to another telephone. If there is no dial tone on that other telephone either, then the telephone line cord may be defective. Try installing a new telephone line cord.
If changing telephone line cord does not help, the wall jack (or the wiring to this wall jack) may be defective. Contact your telephone service provider.
You may be using a new cable or VoIP service, the existing telephone jacks in your home may no longer work. Contact your service provider for solutions.
Make sure you have cellular coverage and the Bluetooth function of your cell phone or headset is turned on. See the user’s manual of your cell phone or headset for more information.
Make sure that the telephone base is in discoverable mode.
Carefully follow the pairing instructions in this manual. Make sure that your Bluetooth cell phone or headset is not connected to any other Bluetooth device, and is connected to the telephone base and active on the device list.
Turn off your cell phone or headset, and then turn it on again.
The cell phone reception in my house is poor and I cannot connect it to my DS6291.
The answering system does not announce the correct day of the week for recorded messages time stamp.
The answering system does not answer after correct number of rings or does not record messages.
I accidentally set my LCD language to Spanish or French, and I don’t know how to change it back to English.
If there is a location in your house with better reception, you can leave your cell phone at that location while you use the DS6291 cell line. In order for this to work, the telephone base must be within 30 feet of the cell phone.
Make sure you have set the date and time. See Configure your telephone section.
Make sure the answering system is on. When the answering system is on, the telephone base and handset show ANS ON and the /ANS ON light on the telephone base is on.
If toll saver is selected, the number of rings changes to two when there are new messages.
While the handset is not in use, press MENU and then enter 364
to change the handset LCD
language back to English.
Limited warranty
What does this limited warranty cover?
The manufacturer of this VTech Product warrants to the holder of a valid proof of purchase (“Consumer” or “you” ) that the Product and all accessories provided in the sales package ( “Product”) are free from defects in material and workmanship, pursuant to the following terms and conditions, when installed and used normally and in accordance with the Product operating instructions. This limited warranty extends only to the Consumer for Products purchased and used in the United States of America and Canada.
What will VTech do if the Product is not free from defects in materials and workmanship during the limited warranty period (“Materially Defective Product”)?
During the limited warranty period, VTech’s authorized service representative will repair or replace at VTech’s option, without charge, a Materially Defective Product. If we repair the Product, we may use new or refurbished replacement parts. If we choose to replace the Product, we may replace it with a new or refurbished Product of the same or similar design. We will retain defective parts, modules, or equipment. Repair or replacement of the Product, at VTech’s option, is your exclusive remedy. VTech will return the repaired or replacement Products to you in working condition. You should expect the repair or replacement to take approximately 30 days.
How long is the limited warranty period?
The limited warranty period for the Product extends for ONE (1) YEAR from the date of purchase. If VTech repairs or replaces a Materially Defective Product under the terms of this limited warranty, this limited warranty also applies to the repaired or replacement Product for a period of either (a) 90 days from the date the repaired or replacement Product is shipped to you or (b) the time
remaining on the original one-year warranty; whichever is longer.
What is not covered by this limited warranty?
This limited warranty does not cover:
Product that has been subjected to misuse,
1. accident, shipping or other physical damage, improper installation, abnormal operation or handling, neglect, inundation, fire, water or other liquid intrusion; or
Product that has been damaged due to repair,
2. alteration or modification by anyone other than an authorized service representative of VTech; or
Product to the extent that the problem experienced
3. is caused by signal conditions, network reliability, or cable or antenna systems; or
Product to the extent that the problem is caused by
4. use with non-VTech accessories; or
Product whose warranty/quality stickers, product
5. serial number plates or electronic serial numbers have been removed, altered or rendered illegible; or
Product purchased, used, serviced, or shipped for
6. repair from outside the United States of America or Canada, or used for commercial or institutional purposes (including but not limited to Products used for rental purposes); or
Product returned without a valid proof of purchase

8. of customer controls, and installation or repair of systems outside the unit.
How do you get warranty service?
NOTE: Before calling for service, please review the user’s manual - a check of the Product’s controls and features may save you a service call.
Except as provided by applicable law, you assume the risk of loss or damage during transit and transportation and are responsible for delivery or handling charges incurred in the transport of the Product(s) to the service location. VTech will return repaired or replaced Product under this limited warranty. Transportation, delivery or handling charges are prepaid. VTech assumes no risk for damage or loss of the Product in transit. If the Product failure is not covered by this limited warranty, or proof of purchase does not meet the terms of this limited warranty, VTech will notify you and will request that you authorize the cost of repair prior to any further repair activity. You must pay for the cost of repair and return shipping costs for the repair of Products that are not covered by this limited warranty.
What must you return with the Product to get warranty service?

Other limitations
This warranty is the complete and exclusive agreement between you and VTech. It supersedes all other written or oral communications related to this Product. VTech provides no other warranties for this Product. The warranty exclusively describes all of VTech’s
responsibilities regarding the Product. There are no other express warranties. No one is authorized to make modifications to this limited warranty and you should not rely on any such modification.
State/Provincial Law Rights: This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state or province to province.
Limitations: Implied warranties, including those of fitness for a particular purpose and merchantability (an unwritten warranty that the Product is fit for ordinary use) are limited to one year from the date of purchase. Some states/provinces do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you.
