INSTRUCTIONS
Bank Notes and Checks
To test the unit, plug into the mains electricity, switch on and
place a sheet of bleached (UV bright) paper under the lamp and
compare with a genuine bank note or check. The paper will glow
brightly but the note or check will remain dull.

To identify counterfeit bank notes and checks, simply pass them
under the ultraviolet light. If a note or check glows, it is almost
certainly a counterfeit. The only exceptional circumstances in
which a genuine note might glow is where it has accidentally been
washed in a soap/detergent containing a whiting agent. Even
then it is unlikely to glow uniformly, but if a note glows at all it
should be inspected visually for water marks and metal strip, and
if you are still uncertain you would be well advised to reject it
politely. Bear in mind that the customer may not be aware that
he/she has passed a forgery.
Bank notes, standard checks and travelers checks are printed on
water marked security paper, the supply of which is carefully
controlled and counterfeiters are unable to get hold of it. They are
obligated to either print their forgeries on inferior bleached paper,
or to photocopy notes, possibly imprinting the metal strip and
watermark in them. These forgeries are often good enough to
pass inspection, particularly in poor light or when you are under
pressure, but they will invariably glow under the ultraviolet lamp.
Sometimes, in order to beat the system, the counterfeiter will wax
the surface of the note which will tend to suppress the glow. If a
note is not completely dull under the lamp, or it’s surface feels
wavy, it should be visually inspected to check that the watermark
is in the paper and printed on the back, so that it appears as a
watermark from the front of the note. The counterfeiter takes
advantage of the fact that most people automatically inspect the
note from the front!
Credit Cards
In many cases, attempts to alert or to remove the legitimate
signature on the card will also be revealed by the lamp. As most
credit card companies offer rewards for recovery of lost or stolen
cards, this lamp could be a valuable facility. “Cloned” or
counterfeit credit cards are making appearances word-wide and it
is doubtful whether credit card companies’ guarantees would
extend to payments made against such cards since they did not
issue them. Fortunately, most credit cards carry visible ultraviolet
markings which enable you to authenticate them and which will be
revealed by the lamp.
