Ultra•Max® Hand Held Deactivator
About the Un it
The Ultra•Max hand- held deact ivat or ( HHD) is a batter y- oper ated, rechargeable, device used to:
Detect active Ultra•Max security labels or tags at stor e exits so they can be returned to the checkout counter f or pr oper deact ivation or remo val
Deactivate labels when nec es sar y
Audit incoming merchandise for source tagging compliance.
The deactivator works by generating a short-range field and then listening for s ignal fr om an active Ultra•Max sec urity t ag or label. Typically, it is held over merchandise near the security label. If a signal is detected, t he deactivator emits a f ield that deactivates the tag or label.

In stalling th e Charger
Using the Wand
IMPORTANT! To ensure t he i nstallatio n co mplies with all applicable codes and regulat io ns, w hen you first receive the deactivator , you must install its charger by followi ng the steps listed below. DO NOT leave the charger lyi ng aro und.
Install the charger as follows:
1. Using the two scr ew s provided, mount the
charger vertically to any flat surface with its open end facing up (see diagram).
2. Plug the cord of the power supply into the side
of the charger.
3. Plug the power supply into an AC wall outlet.
The green light on the charger should lig ht.
Charging the Wand
1. With the lights on the wand facing you, slide the
handle of the wand into the tube of the charger
and push down.
a. The top light o n the charger t ur ns red t o
indicate charging, which can take up to 10 hours max. When the top light turns green, the wand is fully charged. The wand should be fully charged before usi ng it for the first time.
b. This pr oduct uses a nickel metal hydr ide
battery. To maximize battery life, charge batter y for 10 hours before f irst use.
c. The power supply may get s lig htly war m
during charging (this is normal).
2. Remove the wand from the charger. The charge
should last for about 5 hours. Note: You can store the wand in the charger when
not in use; however, bat t er y life can be enha nced if you unplug the power supply when not rechargi ng.
You detect act ive labels and tags as follows:
1. Hold button on wand down.
2. T he w a nd w ill g o thro ugh an in itia lization routine (see below) .
3. Continuing to hold the button down, move wand in a circular motion over item. If the red light on the wand glows and a steady beep occurs (with the green light remaini ng lit), t hen an active label or tag has been found.
Note: For best oper ator c omfort, the unit is recommended for use for s hort per iods of time only (for example, for checking a shop-ping bag or a source-tagged sample) . Pr o- longed repet it ive use by the same employee is not recommended.
CAUTION: To avoid EA S det ect or false alarms, EAS deact ivator fals e trigger ing, and degraded perfor mance of detect or , deactivator, and verifier, keep the wand at least 1.8m (6') from EAS transmitt er s ( detect or s and deactivators).

In itialization Routine
The wand has a button, a buzzer, and two lights (red and green). When you first pr es s dow n the button, the lights and buzzer go t hrough a sequence as follows:
a. Red flashes once b. Green flashes once c. Short beep occurs d. Green light glows steadily and remains on. The verifier is then ready to detec t labels or t ags. Note: Large metal surfaces ( including shopping
carts) can affect detection. The red light on the wand will bl ink when met a l is d etected; in whic h case, move the wand at least 1m (3') away from the metal and retry. If the green light blinks, then wand needs to be recharged.
Battery Di sposal
If your st ate or country requires that you remove the batteries f or spec ial disposal, here is how to remove them (refer to the following figure).
1. Lift the housing cover by removing tw o sc r ews “A” and “B” fr om the housing. Use a 2mm All en wrench the remove the screw labeled “A” and a Phillips screwdr iver to r emo ve the screw labeled “B”.
2. Remove the cover by pulling it in the direction of the arrow.
3. The two batter ies ar e mounted to a circuit board. Cut the red and black wires at one
end of the board.
4. Cut the red and black wires at t he other end of the board.
5. Remove the board containing t he batter ies and send it to the designated disposal site.
