About TurningKey

1
TurningKey is a lightweight software application that allows presenters to create and deliver new or existing assessments with an audience response system. Presenters can create an answer key assessment from new or existing tests and deliver those tests using Turning Technologies’ XR or NXT ResponseCards.
Features include:
Up to 20 different test versions may be administered at a time
Supports multiple choice, multiple answer, matching, numeric response and fill in the blank question
types
Allows the question type and correct answer(s) to be entered so recreating an existing test is
unnecessary
Set a specific end time or time block for a test
Monitor questions and answers via the Live Results Monitor (ResponseCard NXT only)

Technical Requirements

The following requirements are necessary in order for TurningKey to properly function.
Mac OS X 10.4 or higher
G3 processor or better / Intel processors fully supported (Universal Binary)
256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended)
10 MB hard disk space
Turning Technologies ResponseCard XR with at least a 2.4 FTDI or HID USB RF Receiver
Turning Technologies ResponseCard NXT with a 4.6 HID USB RF Receiver

Getting Started

Downloading TurningKey

To ensure that the latest version available is installed, download TurningKey from the Turning
Technologies website.
How to download TurningKey...
1 Go to www.TurningTechnologies.com/downloads.
Getting Started
2 Click the Legacy tab and select TurningKey for Mac.
Release notes are available in PDF format to the right of the download link.
3 Enter the required information and click Submit.
4 Click the link to start the download.
5 Save the file to a specified location.

Opening TurningKey

The software must be installed and open on the computer in which the test is to be administered.
How to open TurningKey...
1 Double-click the dmg file.
2 Drag the TurningKey icon to the Applications folder.

3 Open Applications and double-click TurningKey.
Note
Create an alias for TurningKey.app on your dock for quicker access to the application.

Configuring TurningKey for Automatic Updates

TurningKey has a feature which checks for updates and immediately applies them to the software.
Before You Begin
An active internet connection to check for software updates is required.
How to configure TurningKey for automatic updates...
1 Open TurningKey.
2 Click TurningKey on the menu bar and select Preferences....
3 Select the Application tab.
4 Check the box labeled Automatically check for updates.
5 Click Install Update on the notification window to install the updated software.

Setting the Default Save Location

The default save location for participant lists, sessions and answer keys can be set to a user preferred location. Network resources can be specified as the default save location.
How to set the default save location...
1 Click TurningKey on the menu bar and select Preferences....
2 Select the Application tab.
3 Click Browse... to navigate to the desired save location.

In TurningKey, an Answer Key is a document that contains the answers to a set of questions.

An Answer Key must be loaded prior to starting the test.

Creating a New Answer Key

An Answer Key can be based off of a Word document, PDF, spreadsheet, etc.
How to create a new Answer Key...
1 Click New Key on the TurningKey toolbar.
The TurningKey Information window appears.

2 Enter the appropriate information in the fields provided:
Field Name Description
Number of Versions The number of test versions to be created for the answer key. A valid
entry is a whole number between 1 and 20.
Number of Questions The number of questions to be included in the Answer Key. A valid entry
is a whole number between 1 and 100 for the XR or 1 and 200 for the NXT.
Correct The default point value for a correct answer. A valid entry is a number
between -10,000 and 10,000.
Incorrect The default point value for an incorrect answer. A valid entry is a number
between -10,000 and 10,000.
Question Type Select the default question type for the Answer Key.
Number of Choices Select the default number of answer choices for the Answer Key.
Test Name The name of the test (24 character limit). The name of the test is
displayed on the ResponseCard NXT during the log in process.
Using Answer Keys
Description Provide a description of the answer key. This field is optional.
Note
If “Essay” is selected as the default question type, the limit is 50 essay questions.
Essay questions are not graded by TurningKey.
3 Click Continue.
The TurningKey editor opens. A question list is generated with the number of questions selected in step 2.
4 If there are multiple versions of the Answer Key, select the version number from the drop-down menu.
5 If necessary, select the desired question type from the drop-down menu next to the question number.
Available Question Types:
Multiple Choice
Multiple Response
Fill in the Blank - Multiple correct answers must be separated by a semi-colon. Correct answers have
a limit of 16 characters.

Using Answer Keys
The following symbols are supported for ResponseCard NXT:

The following symbols are supported for ResponseCard XR:

Numeric Response
Matching - Does allow for duplicate answers and is order specific.
True/False
Essay - Essay responses are not graded by TurningKey; participant responses can be viewed in the
Individual Results Report and the Individual Score Report.
6 Depending on the question type selected, you will select the number of answer choices, enter a text
based answer, enter the Min and Max values or select a True and/or False checkbox.
Note
Click the button labeled Show Point Values to adjust the correct or incorrect value on a per question basis. To hide the point values, click Hide
Point Values.
7 To save the Answer Key, click the Action (gear) button and select either Save or Save As...
8 Name the file and click Save.

Inserting a New Question in an Answer Key

Additional questions can be added to an Answer Key.
For a single test version...
1 Click Insert Question.
2 Select one of the following options:
Insert new question above current question
Insert new question below current question

3 Click OK.
For multiple test versions...
1 Click Insert Question.
2 Select the radio button for the insertion point of the new question for each version of the test.
3 Select to insert the question before or after the insertion point.

Removing a Question from an Answer Key

A question can be easily removed from an Answer Key.
For a single test version...
1 Select the question to be removed.
2 Click Remove Question.
For multiple test versions...
1 Click Remove Question.
2 Select the question to be removed from each version of the test.
3 Click OK.

Standards

Standards
TurningKey’s Standards Tool allows for the use of built-in standards (per state or country, type, subject and grade level) to create custom lists of standards on which participants can be evaluated. Participants’ results can be reviewed by standards Reports.

Downloading K-12 Standards

Active internet access is required to download the K-12 standards.
How to download K-12 standards...
1 Click Standards on the TurningKey Editor toolbar.
2 Click Download/Remove Standards on the Standards window.
3 Select your State(s).
Note
To remove a set of standards, uncheck the box next to the state.
4 Click Apply Changes.
The selected standards download and the State Selection window closes.

Creating a Custom Standards List

TurningKey allows the creation of a list of standards to suit specific needs. Categories and standards can be removed using the delete key on the keyboard.
How to create a custom standards list...
1 Click Standards on the Question Editor toolbar.
2 Select the Custom Standards tab.

Standards
The Select a Custom Standards List... drop-down menu displays the selected Standards List. The drop-down menu allows you to choose from the Standards Lists in your Standards folder. Use the Load button to import a Standards List into your Standards folder from another location. Click the Delete button to delete a Standards List from your Standards folder. Create a custom Standards List in your Standards folder by clicking the New button.
3 Click New.
4 Double-click on the new Standards List parent name to edit the name.
TurningKey creates the Standards List in your Standards folder and displays it in the Select a Custom Standards List... drop-down menu.
The new Standards List has a top-level (Parent) category with the same name as the list.
Categories arrange standards into a hierarchy.
5 To add a category or a standard, complete the following steps:
a Click Add Category or Add Standard.
Enter a title for the category or standard.
b Click OK.
TurningKey adds the category or standard to the parent category.
c Repeat steps a and b to add additional categories and/or standards.
Delete a category or standard from the list using the Remove button. Additionally, you can change the title of a category or standard using the Edit button.
The standards can now be added to the questions.

Assigning Standards to a Question

Follow the steps below to assign standards to questions in an Answer Key.
How to assign standards to a question...
1 Click Standards on the Question Editor toolbar.

2 Select either the K-12 Standards tab or the Custom Standards tab.
3 Select the test version to apply the standards to from the Current Version drop-down menu.
4 Select the question in the left panel.
5 Select a standard from the list.
6 Select the right arrow button (>) to assign the standard to the question.
The standard displays in the list of current standards on the right side.
Remove a standard using the left arrow button (<).
7 Repeat steps 3 - 6 to add standards to additional questions.
Note
You can assign multiple standards or use multiple Standards Lists.
To start over, select the Clear All button to clear all standards from every question in the question list.
8 When finished assigning standards, click Close.

Creating a Participant List

Creating a Participant List
Using a participant list is optional, however it is highly recommended to use a participant list if you would like to track participant results and collect data.
How to create a participant list...
1 Click Participant List on the TurningKey menu bar and select Create Participant List....
2 Select a Participant List Template.
Education Contains standard student information used for K-12 and higher education
presentations, such as name and student ID.
Corporate Contains fields for the information most often used in corporate feedback
meetings including name, company name, telephone numbers, etc.
Available Fields Contains all information fields defined for use with TurningKey.
Blank Allows you to specify the fields in the Participant List.
Custom Allows you to choose a saved or modified template.
3 Click Continue.
The screen displays all of the available fields on the left panel and the selected fields that correspond to the chosen template on the right panel.
You have the option to edit the selected fields:
Double-click a field on the left to place it under Fields Added on the right panel.
Select the field and click (-) to remove it from the list.
Rearrange the order of the Added Fields list by clicking the field and dragging it up or down the list.
Add a custom field by clicking the ( + ) if a desired field is not listed in the left panel.
A selected field name can be edited by single clicking, pausing, and then single clicking the field
name again.
4 Click Continue.
The Participant List Information Page displays the participant list name (a default time and date stamp) and the number of fields.
5 Name the participant list.
Click Go Back to return to the field selection window.

6 Click Finish.
The Participant List Editor window displays.
Note
A Device ID column is automatically placed as the first column in the participant list. This field can be left blank and the participant will be matched to the user ID entered in the ResponseCard.
7 Double-click on a field and type in the participant information.
8 Double-click on the next field and type in the participant information.
9 Repeat steps 7 and 8 until all participant information has been entered.
10 Click Done.

Loading a Participant List

The participant list information is automatically saved.
Loading a Participant List
A participant list must be loaded prior to starting the session in order for participant information and results data to be tracked.
How to load a participant list...
1 Click Participant List on the TurningKey menu bar.
Auto Select Auto if you want to collect Device IDs or user information from the
ResponseCard XR or ResponseCard NXT to build a real-time participant list.
Choose Other... Select Choose Other... if you want to select a saved participant list to be
used with the session.
Tip
A participant list can also be loaded from the Participant List drop-down menu on the main application window.
You can also select a recently used participant list from the bottom of the Participants List menu.

Editing a Participant List
A participant list may be edited.
How to edit a participant list...
1 Click Participant List on the TurningKey menu bar and select Edit Participant List....
2 Select the Participant List and click Open.
3 There are several editing options available all of which can be accessed from the Participant Menu
button in the bottom left corner of the window:
Add a Field - Click the Action button and select Add Field. Select a Field from the drop-down list or
type the name of the new field in the box provided and click Add.
Rename a Field - Select the field and click the Action button, select Rename Field, enter the new
name in the box provided, then click OK.
Remove a Field - Select the field you want to remove. The entire column is now highlighted. Click
the Action button and select Remove Field.
Add a Participant - Select a row by clicking on the row number in the gray area to the far left. Click
the Action button and select Add Participant. A blank row is added to the list below the select row. Enter the new participant information by typing in the blank boxes.
Remove a Participant(s) - Select a participant by clicking on the row number in the gray area. You
may select more than one participant by holding shift or control when you select participants. Click the Action button and select Remove Participant(s).
4 Click Done.
5 Click Save or Save and Use in Session to save changes to the participant list.

Printing a Participant List

A participant list may be printed f a hard copy of the list is desired.
How to print a participant list...
1 Click Participant List on the TurningKey menu bar and select Edit Participant List....
2 Select the participant list and click Open.

3 From the menu bar on the Participant Information window, click File and select Print Participant List.
4 Select the fields to be printed.
5 Select Portrait or Landscape from the drop-down menu.
6 Click Print.

Administering a Test in TurningKey

Administering a Test in TurningKey
Follow the steps below to successfully administer a test in TurningKey.
How to administer a test in TurningKey...
1 Plug the USB RF receiver into the computer.
2 If an Answer Key is not already loaded, click Open Key on the TurningKey toolbar.
3 Select the Answer Key and click Open.
Tip
A QuestionPoint test can also be used as an Answer Key.
Warning
If the wrong Answer Key is selected and participants have already started taking the test, alert them that they need to delete the current test on the ResponseCard. Once the participants have deleted the tests, they can log in to the new test.
4 Select a Participant List.
5 Optionally, click Set Timer on the TurningKey toolbar to set a timer. You can specify a duration of time
or a specific end time. A timer may also be set once polling has opened.
6 Click Open Polling.
7 A window opens that allows you to specify the ResponseCard NXT settings.
User ID Login: Determines if the participants will be required to enter a User ID when they log in to
the test.
Completed Test Message: Determines if a participant score is sent to the ResponseCard once the
test is sent.
Custom Message: If Custom was selected as the Completed Test Message, enter the text for the
message in the box provided.
Prompt before displaying message: Allows the students to determine if the Completed Test
Message displays on their ResponseCard NXT.

Viewing the Live Results and Feedback Monitor (NXT Only)

8 Click OK.
9 The students can now enter answers into the ResponseCards and submit their test when complete.
If a duration of time was set, time may be added or subtracted in one minute increments by clicking the plus or minus buttons in the time window. Clicking and holding the timer button will adjust the time in five minute increments. The timer may also be paused.
10 Click Close Polling to end the test.
11 Click Answer Key from the menu bar and select Save Session As...
12 Name the session and click Save.
Viewing the Live Results and Feedback Monitor (NXT Only)
The Live Results and Feedback Monitor provides real-time information about the test. You can see what questions a student has answered and which ones they have responded to correctly or incorrectly. You can also see the overall progress for the entire test. Additionally, feedback can be monitored in this window.
How to view the Live Results and Feedback Monitor...
1 While a test is being administered, click Window and select Live Results & Feedback Monitor.
2 Click Individual Progress to view progress by student.
The test version, score and overall progress for each student is displayed. Green check marks indicate the student answered the question correctly, and red X’s indicate the student answered incorrectly. Dashes represent an unanswered question, while a circle with a line through it indicates the question had neither a correct or incorrect answer value. Hover the mouse over the check marks, X’s or the circles to see the participant’s response.
3 Click Overall Progress to view progress by test version.
The test version numbers are listed along with the average number of answered questions and the average score. At the bottom of the window the statistics for the entire test are displayed.
4 Click Feedback to view feedback submitted by individual students.
Individual students can send feedback to the instructor at anytime by using the Note to Leader function in NXT.

After a TurningKey test is administered and saved, it becomes a session. Sessions can be managed via
TurningKey.

Session Management

TurningKey offers several options for Session Management.

Saving a Session

To generate reports, a session must be saved.
How to save a session...
1 From the menu bar, click File and select Save Session As....
2 Enter a name for the file.
Session Management
3 Select the location to save the session file.
4 Click Save Session.

Resetting a Session

Resetting a session will permanently erase all collected data from the current session.
How to reset a session...
1 From the menu bar, click File and select Reset Session.

Continuing a Session

Continuing a session allows the collection of additional student responses after the initial test. This feature can be useful when a student needs to make up a missed test.
How to continue a session...
1 From the menu bar, click File and select Continue Session.

2 Select a session file.
3 Click Open.
The session is now ready to receive additional tests not collected during the original test.
4 After receiving additional tests, save the session.

Editing a Session

The TurningKey Session Editor allows you to change point values, change or remove a correct answer, add or remove standards and change participant list information.
Before You Begin
The session you wish to edit must be open in TurningKey. If you have saved the session and wish to edit it at a later time, you must first continue the session.
How to edit a session...
1 From the menu bar, click Window and select Session Editor.
2 If there is more than one version of the answer key associated with the session, select the version to be
edited from the version drop-down menu.
3 To change a correct answer, replace the current correct answer with a new correct answer.
4 To change the correct or incorrect point values, replace the current value with the new value.
5 Click Edit Test Info to change the test name or description.
6 Click Edit Standards to assign standards to test questions. For more information on Standards see
Standards on page 14.
7 Click Participants from the Session Editor toolbar to edit participant information. For more information
on participant lists, see Participant Lists.
Note
Device ID information can not be edited.

8 Click Edit.
9 To save the edited session, click the Action button and select Save Session As...
10 Name the session and select the save location.
11 Click Save Session.

Extracting an Answer Key from a Session

This action is useful if you have a session file but have lost the corresponding Answer Key, or if the Answer Key was created on a different computer.
Before You Begin
The session must be open in TurningKey. If you have saved the session and wish to edit it at a later time, you must first continue the session.
How to extract an answer key from a session...
1 From the menu bar, click Window and select Session Editor.
2 Click the Action Item button and select Extract Session’s Answer Key...
3 Name the session and select the save location.

Exporting

Sessions can be exported to a pre-defined export scheme.

Exporting Session Results

Follow the steps below to export a session to an export scheme.
How to export session results...
1 Click Export on the TurningKey toolbar.
2 Select the session to be exported.

3 Select the Export Format.
4 Click Export.
5 Name the file and click Save. Exported files are saved as .txt files.
6 Click OK when the confirmation message appears.
7 Click Close to close the export window.

Logging into a Learning Management System (LMS)

Logging into a Learning Management System (LMS)
Prior to logging into an LMS, please verify with your IT Department that the LMS is installed and working properly. For technical issues regarding TurningKey and LMNS, contact Turning Technologies’ Customer Support team.
How to log into a Learning Management System (LMS)...
1 Click Window on the TurningKey menu bar and select LMS Integrations.
2 From the Management System drop-down menu select the desired Management System.
3 Enter the Server URL and click Continue.
4 Enter the Username and Password.
5 Optionally, select the Institution from the drop-down menu and click Continue.
Tip
Check the box next to Save this information for future use to avoid entering the information each time the
Integrations window is opened.

Importing a Participant List

Prior to importing a participant list, the steps in Logging into a Learning Management System (LMS) must be completed.
How to import a participant list...
1 Select Import Participant List and click Continue.
2 Select the course and click Finish.
3 Save the participant list.

4 Confirmation that the list was successfully imported will be displayed. Click OK.

E-mailing student grades is optional.
Before You Begin
The steps in Logging into a Learning Management System (LMS) on page 31 must be completed.
How to export grades/e-mail student grades...
1 Select Export Grades/E-mail Student Grades and click Continue.
2 Select the course you wish to export to and click Continue.
3 Select the session file.
4 Check the box next to Add grades shown above to gradebook and assign a column header and
maximum value.
Optionally, check the box to e-mail individual results to students through WebCT/Blackboard and
enter your e-mail address. Additionally, there is the option to include Common Message.
5 Click Finish.
