Traynor IronHorse DH40H
Introduction
The Traynor IronHorse DH40H is a professional grade, all-tube guitar head. Designed with the working musician in mind, the IronHorse is suited for use in the studio and on stage. Taking cues from Traynor’s 50 years in the amp business, the IronHorse is a piece of rugged gear stripped down to the essentials. Simple enough to get your tone fast, versatile enough to handle any job.

Features

• 100% designed & manufactured in Canada!
• All-tube design with one 12AU7, a pair of 12AX7, and a pair of matched EL34 tubes
• Cascode input stage for pentode like drive from the preamp
• User selectable Fixed-Bias and Cathode-Bias modes
• Three footswitchable tonestack modes to choose from: CLEAN, PURE and SOLO
• No feedback loop for a raw, classic tube tone
• 0dB and –6dB inputs
• Effects loop
• Steel chassis for maximum durability and noise immunity
• Traynor DHB2 padded bag included

QuickStart Instructions

1. Plug the AC power line into a 3-hole grounded outlet.
2. Connect the amp to a 4 or 8 ohm cabinet via the jacks on the back of the amp and
select the corresponding load rating with the speaker impedance switch. The matching
Traynor DHX212 extension cabinet would be a good choice. So would a wall of 4x12
cabinets if you’re that sort of person…
3. Flip the Standby switch to the middle position and turn the Power switch ON. It’ll take a
minute for your tubes to heat up.
4. Plug in your instrument and turn the Master control to zero.
5. Turn the Gain, Treble and Bass controls to their mid position.
6. Select which output tube bias mode you want to use with the Standby switch. In the down position you’ll be in the lower headroom Cathode Bias mode. Flip the switch to the up position to engage the higher headroom of the Fixed Bias mode.
7. Crank up the Master, dial in your tone and break a few strings!

Controls

1. Inputs

The IronHorse DH40H is equipped with two inputs. Input I is the standard high sensitivity
guitar input. Input II is padded down by -6dB. Use this jack if you are using active pickups or
want more clean headroom from the amp.

2. Gain

This control adjusts the gain of the amp’s rst tube stage. Along with the CLEAN/PURE/SOLO
switch, the Gain control determines how much clipping you’ll get at low volumes. You’ll notice a
greater difference between the CLEAN, PURE and SOLO modes when the gain is set beyond its
mid position.

3. Bass and Treble

Use these controls to shape the overall tone of the amp. The mid point is a good starting position.

4. CLEAN/PURE/SOLO Switch CLEAN – In this position, you’ll find you get the most headroom from the amp and the

tone controls work as expected.
PURE – A PURE setting – what’s this you ask? This position bypasses the tonestack,
meaning you can spin those tone knobs all you want, but they won’t do much! What you get is the natural EQ of the amp and a hotter signal going to the power amp. Crank the Gain and Master to 10 and listen to the output tubes saturate!
SOLO – The SOLO mode is similar to the PURE setting but with more gain. As with the
PURE mode, the tonestack is disengaged, allowing the natural EQ of the amp to come out.

5. Master

The Master control sets the overall output volume of the DH40H. Use it to control your volume
but also use it in conjunction with the Gain knob to vary the amp’s clipping characteristic. High
Gain + Low Master = Preamp Clipping. Low Gain + High Master = Power Amp Clipping.

6. Standby / Bias Switch

Another unique feature of the IronHorse DH40H is the ability to choose between two bias
modes for the output tubes. In the mid position, your amp will be in standby as indicated by
the amber pilot light. Switch to the down position to use the Cathode Bias mode. You’ll see the pilot light go green. Flip to the up position to get the Fixed Bias mode. The pilot light turns red.
The main differences you’ll hear are more compression and less output at higher levels from
the Cathode Bias mode. You’ll also notice a difference in attack and distortion characteristic of
the output tubes between the two modes.

Tips on Tone

· TIP #1: Maximum headroom – if you’re looking to get a great clean tone, go to Fixed Bias mode, switch to CLEAN mode and use Input II. Lower the Gain all the way and turn up the Master to full. Slowly bring up the Gain control until you get the volume you need.
· TIP #2: Want to ride two horses? If you have two IronHorses, each with their own cabinets, you can setup a master/slave configuration. Take a stanard ¼-inch guitar cable and run it from the Preamp Out of the first amp and connect it to the Power Amp In of the second amp. Except for the Master knob, all the controls on the second
amp are now disabled. You’ll get the same signal going to the both power amps

7. Power Switch

You know what the Power switch does, but here’s a tip: when you turn your amp off, leave the Bias Mode switch in either Fixed Bias or Cathode Bias mode. This will discharge the
capacitors in your amp’s power supply faster when you’re not using it.
3

8. Speaker Impedance and Cabinets

On the rear of the DH40H you’ll nd a pair of output jacks along with an impedance select
switch. This allows for a variety of cabinets to be connected to your amp.
Take note that these jacks are connected internally in parallel. Here are some examples of
how to connect cabinets to your IronHorse:
• Connect a single Traynor DHX212 (8-ohms) to either output jack and set the impedance switch to 8-ohms.
• Connect a pair of Traynor DHX12 (16-ohms each, 8-ohms total when connected in parallel) to the output jacks – one cabinet per jack and set the impedance switch to 8-ohms.
• Connect a pair of Traynor DHX212 (8-ohms each, 4-ohms total when connected in parallel) to the output jacks – one cabinet per jack and set the impedance switch to 4-ohms.

9. Power Amp IN / Preamp OUT (Effects Loop)

The IronHorse is equipped with a instrument level effects loop. The effects loops allows you
to place your effects pedals in the amps signal chain, post GAIN and tonstack circuitry, pre MASTER. This is useful for delay and modulation type effects such as reverb and tremolo.
Using the effects loop is quite easy. Take a normal ¼-inch guitar cable, connect it to the PREAMP OUT and run it to the input of your pedal chain. Then take another ¼-inch cable and run it from the output of your last pedal to the POWER AMP IN jack.
The effects loop can also be used to slave a second amp if you need more power. Connect a ¼-inch cable from the rst amp’s PREAMP OUT to the second amp’s POWER AMP IN jack. This disables the preamp of the second amplier. Now the signal generated in the rst amp
will feed the power sections of both amplifiers.

10. Footswitch

Any standard two button, latching footswitch can be connected to the IronHorse via the rear Footswitch jack using a 1/4-inch TRS cable. We recommend the Traynor TFS-2B footswitch.
The two buttons are used to activate the PURE and SOLO modes respectively. The SOLO mode will always dominate over the PURE mode. If you have the PURE mode active and then activate the SOLO mode, you will be in SOLO. Deactivate the SOLO mode and you'll go back to PURE. If the PURE mode is off and you hit the SOLO footswitch, you will instantly jump to SOLO mode.
