General Information

If the socket outlets in your home are not suitable for the plug supplied with this unit, the plug must be cut off and an appropriate one fitted.

The plug severed from this mains lead must be destroyed as it is hazardous if inserted into a live socket.

IMPORTANT

The wires in this mains lead are coloured accordance with the following code: BLUE: NEUTRAL BROWN: LIVE As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this unit may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire that is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter N or coloured black. The wire that is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the Letter L or coloured red.

Do not connect either wire to the earth terminal which is marked by the letter E or by the safety earth symbol or coloured green or green-and-yellow.

Use a 5A fuse which is approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362. Always replace the fuse cover after changing the fuse.

19.Be sure to use the unit near the wall outlet. If a malfunction occurs, disconnect the plug from the wall outlet at once.

20.The mains plug is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain readily operable at any time.

This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet international safety standards but, like any electrical equipment, care must be taken if you are to obtain the best results and safety is to be assured. So, please read the points below for your own safety. Notes on handling

When shipping the DVD video player, the original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy. For maximum protection, repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory. Take care not to give it a shock or shake when carrying. Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect spray, near the DVD video player. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the DVD video player for a long time. They will leave marks on the finish. The top and rear panels of the DVD video player may become warm after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction. When the DVD video player is not in use, be sure to remove the disc and turn off the power. If you do not use the DVD video player for a long period, the unit may not function properly in the future. Turn on and use the DVD video player occasionally.

Notes on locating

Place the DVD video player on a level surface. Do not use it on a shaky or unstable surface such as a wobbling table or inclined stand. The loaded disc may come off the proper position and cause damage to the DVD video player. When you place this DVD video player near a TV, radio, or VCR, the playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted. In this case, place the DVD video player away from the TV, radio, or VCR.

Notes on cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.

For stubborn dirt, soak the cloth in a weak detergent solution, wring well and wipe. Use a dry cloth to wipe it dry. Do not use any type of solvent, such as thinners and benzene, as they may damage the surface of the DVD video player. If you use a chemical saturated cloth to clean the unit, follow that product’s instructions.

Inspection and Maintenance

This DVD video player is a high technology, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts become dirty or worn down, the picture quality may be reduced. To avoid reduction in picture quality, it is recommended that regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) be performed every 1,000 hours of use. For further details, contact your nearest consumer electronics dealer.

Notes on moisture condensation

Moisture condensation damages the DVD video player. Please read the following carefully.

Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the DVD video player.

Moisture condensation occurs during the following cases.

When you bring the DVD video player directly from a cold place to a warm place. When you use the DVD video player in a room where you just turned on the heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner directly hits the unit. In summer, when you use the DVD video player in a hot and humid place just after you move the unit from an air conditioned room. When you use the DVD video player in a humid place.

Do not use the DVD video player when moisture condensation may occur.

If you use the DVD video player in such a situation, it may damage discs and internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the DVD video player to the wall outlet, turn on the DVD video player, and leave it for two or three hours. After two or three hours, the DVD video player will have warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the DVD video player connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom occur.

Do not attach paper or tape to discs.

On cleaning discs

Fingerprints and dust on the disc cause picture and sound deterioration. Wipe the disc from the center outwards with a soft cloth. Always keep the disc clean.

If you cannot wipe off the dust with a soft cloth, wipe the disc lightly with a slightly moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth. Do not use any type of solvent such as thinner, benzine, commercially available cleaners or antistatic spray for vinyl LPs. It may damage the disc.

On storing discs

Do not store discs in a place subject to direct sunlight or near heat sources. Do not store discs in places subject to moisture and dust such as a bathroom or near a humidifier. Store discs vertically in a case. Stacking or placing objects on discs outside of their case may cause warping.

Structure of disc contents

Normally, DVD video discs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. VIDEO CDs and audio CDs are divided into tracks.

Each title, chapter or track is assigned a number, which is called “title number”, “chapter number” or “track number” respectively. There may be discs that do not have these numbers.

Sound and movie can be played on this DVD video player in the same way as an audio CD.

• VIDEO CD equipped with PBC function (Version 2.0)

In addition to operation of a VIDEO CD not equipped with the PBC function, you can enjoy playback of interactive software with search function by using the menu displayed on the TV screen (Menu Playback). Some of the functions described in this owner’s manual may not work with some discs.

Because of problems and errors that can occur during the creation of DVD and CD software and/or the manufacture of DVD and CD discs, Toshiba cannot assure that this DVD video player will successfully play every disc bearing the DVD and CD logos. As one of the creators of DVD technology, Toshiba DVD players are manufactured using the highest standards of quality, and as a result, such incompatibilities are rare.

Return to menu display for VCD (2.0) discs with menu.

Use the MENU button to display the menu included on many DVD video discs. To operate a menu, follow the instructions in “Locating a title using the top menu.”

Loading batteries

Introduction

Open the cover.

Insert batteries (R03/AAA size).

Make sure to match the + and – on the batteries to the marks inside the battery compartment.

Caution

• Never throw batteries into fire.

Notes

• Be sure to use R03/AAA size batteries.

• Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area.

• Attention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of battery disposal.

• Do not mix different battery types or combine used batteries with new ones.

• If the remote control does not operate correctly, or if the operating range becomes reduced, replace both batteries with new ones.

• If the batteries are dead or if you will not be using the remote control for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent battery acid from leaking into the battery compartment.

Point the remote control at the remote sensor and press the buttons.

• Direct the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD video player.

• When using the remote control, press the buttons at intervals of about 1 second to ensure the correct mode of operation.

• Do not drop or give the remote control a shock.

• Do not leave the remote control near an extremely hot or humid place.

• Do not spill water or put anything wet on the remote control.

• Do not open the remote control.

• When you connect the DVD video player to your TV, be sure to turn off the power and unplug both units from the wall outlet before making any connections.

• If your television set has one audio input, connect the left and right audio outputs of the DVD video player to a Y cab le adapter (not supplied) and then connect to your TV.

• Connect the D VD video pla y er directly to y our TV. If y ou connect the DVD video player to a VCR, TV/VCR combination or video selector, the playback picture may be distorted as DVD video discs are copy protected.

• Analog audio out will not have sound if DTS playback is selected.

Interlaced outputs

Some TVs or monitors are equipped with component video inputs. Connecting to these inputs allows y ou to enjoy higher quality picture playback. Actual labels for component video inputs may v ary depending on the TV manufacturer. (ex. Y, R-Y, B-Y or Y, CB, CR) In some TVs or monitors, the color levels of the playback picture may be reduced slightly or the tint may change. In such a case, adjust the TV or monitor for optimum performance.

Progressive outputs

Some TVs or monitors are equipped with component video inputs that are capable of reproducing a progressively scanned video signal. Connecting to these inputs allo ws y ou to vie w the highest quality pictures with less flicker.

Consumers should note that not all high definition television sets are fully compatible with this product and may cause artifacts to be displayed in the picture. In case of 525 or 625 progressive scan picture problems, it is recommended that the user switch the connection to the “standard definition” output. If there are questions regarding our TV set compatibility with this model 525p or 625p DVD player, please contact our Customer Service Center.

Switching the output signal (interlaced / progressive) using the remote control

You can temporarily switch the output signal for better picture quality. Press PROGRESSIVE on the remote control during stop mode. Press PROGRESSIVE again to turn off progressive mode. If your TV does not support the progressive scan format, the picture will appear scrambled or blank. To return to normal picture, press PROGRESSIVE button again to turn off progressive mode.

• Refer to the owner’s manual of the connected equipment as well.

• When you connect the D VD video pla yer to other equipment, be sure to turn off the power and unplug all of the equipment from the wall outlet before making any connections.

• If you place the DVD video player near a tuner or radio, the radio broadcast sound might be distorted. In this case, place the DVD video player away from the tuner and radio.

• The output sound of the DVD video player has a wide dynamic range. Be sure to adjust the receiver’s volume to a moderate listening level. Otherwise, high volume sound may damage your hearing as well as the speakers.

• Turn off the amplifier before you connect or disconnect the DVD video player’s pow er cord. If you leave the amplifier power on, the speakers may be damaged.

• Progressive can be on/off only when “Video Output” is set to Component or P-Scan 59.

• In component connections, the screen might become pinkish in colour when the “Video Output” is set to Composite. This is not a defect of this unit 59.

• When the TV system is set to NTSC mode, all output will be forced to NTSC type (eg. 525p (480p), 525i (480i), etc.)

• When the TV system is set to PAL mode, all output will be forced to PAL type (eg. 625p (576p), 625i (576i), etc.)

• Analog audio out will not have sound if DTS playback is selected.

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) supports both video and audio on a single digital connection for use with DVD pla yers, DTV, set-top boxes, and other A V de vices. HDMI was developed to provide the technologies of High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) as well as Digital Visual Interface (DVI) in one specification. HDCP is used to protect digital content transmitted and received by DVI-compliant or HDMI-compliant displays.

Connecting to a display (Using a HDMI cable)

HDMI has the capability to support standard, enhanced, or highdefinition video plus standard to multi-channel surround-sound audio. HDMI features included uncompressed digital video, a bandwidth of up to 2.2 gigabytes per second (with HDTV) signals), one connector (instead of several cables and connectors), and communication between the AV source and AV devices such as DTVs.

of the DVD video player to the AC-3 RF input of a Dolby Digital Receiver. This input on your A/V Receiv er is reserved for Laserdisc use only and is incompatible with the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the DVD video player.

• Connect the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the

DVD video player to the “DIGITAL (COAXIAL)” input of a Receiver or Processor.

• The output sound of the DVD video player has a wide

dynamic range. Be sure to adjust the receiv er’s volume to a moderate listening level. Otherwise, the speakers may be damaged by a sudden high volume sound.

• Turn off the amplifier before you connect or disconnect the

DVD video player’s power cord. If you leave the amplifier power on, the speakers may be damaged.

• When you are connecting (via the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack) an A V decoder that does not ha ve Dolby Digital, Digital Theater Systems (DTS) or MPEG2 decoding function, be sure to set “Digital Output” to “PCM” from the on-screen displays 61 . Otherwise, high v olume sound may damage your hearing as well as the speakers.

• When playing DTS-encoded discs (DVD Video discs and audio CDs), excessive noise may be output from the analog audio output jacks. To avoid possible damage to the audio system, you should take proper precautions when the analog audio output jacks of the DVD video player are connected to an amplification system. To enjoy DTS Digital Surround™ playback, an e xternal 5.1 channel DTS Digital Surround™ decoder system must be connected to the COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the DVD video player.

This section shows you the basics on how to play a disc.

Keep your fingers well clear of the disc tray as it is closing. Neglecting to do so may cause serious personal injury.

Preparations

• When you want to view a disc, turn on the TV and select the video input connected to the DVD video player.

• When you want to enjoy the sound of discs from the audio system, turn on the audio system and select the input connected to the DVD video player.

Press the ON/STANDBY button.

Press OPEN/CLOSE.

Place the disc on the disc tray.

• There are two different disc sizes. Place the disc in the correct guide on the disc tray. If the disc is out of the guide, it may damage the disc and cause the DVD video player to malfunction.

• Do not place a disc which is unplayable in this DVD video player.

The DVD video player turns on.

The disc tray opens.

With the playback side down

Press OPEN/CLOSE to close the disc

tray.

If you insert a DVD video disc that contains a top menu, a menu may appear. Use the to select the title you want to view, then press ENTER to start playback. See “Locating a title using the top menu.”

• You may need to press the TOP MENU or MENU button to display disc menu (depending on the actual DVD video disc.)

Notes

• If the disc tray is holding a disc you have already played, playback will begin from the location where you last stopped. For resuming playback, see 29.

• Some video CD are recorded with PBC (Playback Control), a menu with recorded contents may appear on the TV if you have turned the PBC on. You can make your selection according to its PBC menu. Press the PBC button on the remote control to turn PBC on or off anytime during Video CD playback. When switching from PBC off to PBC on mode, playback will start from the beginning of the disc.

To turn on the menu display again, press the RETURN

To obtain a higher quality picture

Occasionally, some picture noise not usually visible during a normal broadcast may appear on the TV screen while playing a DVD video disc because the high resolution pictures on these discs include a lot of information. While the amount of noise depends on the TV you use with this DVD video player, you should generally reduce the sharpness adjustment on your TV when viewing DVD video discs.

To pause playback (still mode)

Press PAUSE/STEP during playback.

To resume normal playback, press the PLAY button.

• The sound is muted during still mode.

To stop playback

Press STOP.

To remove the disc

Press OPEN/CLOSE.

Remove the disc after the disc tray opens completely.

Be sure to press the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray after you remove the disc.

Notes

• Do not move the DVD video player during playback. Doing so may damage the disc.

• Use the OPEN/CLOSE button to open and close the disc tray. Do not push the disc tray while it is moving. Doing so may cause the DVD video player to malfunction.

• Do not push up on the disc tray or put any objects other than discs on the disc tray. Doing so may cause the DVD video player to malfunction.

• In many instances, a menu screen will appear after playback of a movie is completed. Prolonged display of an on-screen menu may damage your television set, permanently etching that image onto its screen. To avoid this, be sure to press the STOP button on your remote control once the movie is completed.

To turn the power off (To enter the standby mode)

Press ON/STANDBY to turn the unit to standby mode.

Note

Be aware that this equipment is still powered even on standby mode. To disconnect this equipment completely from the main power, pull out the power plug from the wall outlet.

About the screen saver

When you leave the unit in DVD stop mode for approximately 2 minutes, the screen saver of the DVD video player automatically appears. To turn off the screen saver, press the PLAY button.

Automatic Power Off function

If the DVD video player is stopped, or the screen saver is engaged for approximately 20 minutes, the DVD video player will automatically turn itself off.

• Settings you changed using the on-screen displays while the DVD video player keeps a location in the memory may function only after the memory is cleared.

Normally, DVD video discs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. VIDEO CDs and audio CDs are divided into tracks. You can quickly locate any specific title, chapter, or track.

• This method of locating a title is available only on a disc that contains a top menu.

• This method of locating a title is available only on a disc that contains title numbers.

• For VCD with PBC on, accessing tracks using number buttons does not work.

You can combine your favourite titles, chapters, or tracks and play them in the order you determine. You can program up to 12 selections into the memory. (Memory playback)

Setting titles, chapters, or tracks in a favourite order

Insert a disc and press MEMORY during stop.

Select the items in the order you want by pressing the number buttons.

Each time you press the / / / button, the space is highlighted in turn. Highlight where you want to enter, then press the corresponding number buttons.

To select another chapter in the same title, you need to select the title number.

To select tracks from a VIDEO CD/audio CD in order, press the number buttons for the track.

Press / / / to move the highlighted bar to Play Memory, then press the

ENTER.

You can display subtitles on the TV screen and select a subtitle language from those included on the DVD video disc.

Viewing JPEG Files

You can play JPEG files that have been recorded on a CD-R or CDROM on the DVD video player. You can select a preferred view: a page of 9 thumbnail images or a single image view. Also, rotating, enlarging and shifting of each image can be possible.

Viewing JPEG files

• Prepare a disc that contains JPEG files you want to view.

• Make your TV shape conform to the 4:3 picture size. Only 4:3 pictures can be played regardless of the function settings via the on-screen displays of the DVD video player. If the TV is adjusted to other sizes, e.g. “16:9”, images will appear to be horizontally expanded. For details, refer to the owner’s manual of your TV.

5) Press / to select the rating from 1 to 8. Rating one (1) has the most restrictions while rating eight (8) can virtually playback all DVD software.

6) Press OPEN/CLOSE button to activate the Parental Level setting. If the DVD disc has been designed to temporarily cancel the Parental Level, the screen will change depending on which disc is played. If you select “YES” with the ENTER button, “Enter Password” screen will appear. Input the 4-digit password as you have set then followed by ENTER button and playback will start. If “NO” is selected, press the OPEN/CLOSE” to remove the disc.

Notes

• If you input a wrong password, press CLEAR button and

re-enter your 4-digit password again.

• You cannot play DVD discs rated higher than the level

you selected unless you cancel the parental lock function.

Set Password

New Password can be set to replace the default password.

1) Press SETUP button.

2) Press

/ button to select the Rating.

3) Press

button, then the / button to select

Set Password.

4) Press ENTER button. “Enter Password” screen will appear.

5) Press the number buttons to input the current password (If the password has not been set yet after you purchase this unit, it is “8888”). Then press ENTER.

6) Press ENTER button again, “Enter New Password” screen will appear. Press the number buttons to input the new password.

7) Press ENTER button. Now your new password has been set. Be sure to remember this number!

If you forget the password, you can erase

your current password by pressing number

The setting of Dim Ctrl will reset to “On” after the unit is powered off.

Some DivX® Video-On-Demand files required registration code, please get the code of your DVD video player as follow:

Before Calling Service Personnel

Check the following guide for the possible cause of a problem before contacting service.

Symptoms and correction

Sympton

No power.

The DVD video player turned off by itself.

No picture or abnormal colour (pinkish, greenish, etc.).

Scrolling, jumping or B/W picture.

No sound.

The playback picture has occasional distortion.

Brightness is unstable or noises are present in the playback pictures.

The DVD video player does not start playback.

Playback does not follow the course of the disc’s program.

Buttons do not work.

The remote control does not work properly.

Cause

• The power plug is disconnected.

• The automatic power off function turned the unit off.

• The TV is not set to receive DVD signal output.

• The video/HDMI cable is not connected securely.

• Mismatch setting between TV and this unit.

• Wrong connection.

• PROGRESSIVE button is pressed on a TV equipped with component video input jacks but does not support progressive scan.

• Incompatible TV system.

• The equipment connected with the audio cable is not set to receive DVD signal output.

• The audio cable is not connected securely.

• The audio receiver or TV is turned off.

• The setting of output sound format is incorrect.

• The disc is dirty.

• It is in fast forward or fast reverse playback.

• The effect of copy protection.

• No disc is inserted.

• An unplayable disc is inserted.

• The disc is placed upside down.

• The disc is not placed within the guide.

• The disc is dirty.

• The parental lock function is set.

• It is in the mode of repeat playback, memory playback, etc.

• Power supply fluctuations or other abnormalities such as static electricity may interrupt correct operations.

• The remote control is not pointed at the remote sensor of the DVD video player.

• The remote control is too far from the DVD video player.

• The batteries in the remote control are exhausted.

Correction

• Connect the power plug securely into the wall outlet.

• Press the PLAY button.

• Select the appropriate video input mode on the TV so the picture from the DVD video player appears on the TV screen.

• Connect the video/HDMI cable securely into the appropriate jacks.

• Select the correct Video Output setting.

• Check the connection.

• Toggle PROGRESSIVE button to turn off progressive mode.

• Select the correct TV system.

• Select the correct input mode of the audio receiver so you can listen to the sound from the DVD video player.

• Connect the audio cable securely into the appropriate jacks.

• Turn on the equipment connected with the audio cable.

• Select the proper audio setting.

• Remove the disc and clean it.

• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.

• Connect the DVD video player directly to the TV. Avoid connecting the DVD video player to a VCR or TV/VCR combination.

• Insert a disc.

• Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type and colour system.)

• Place the disc with the playback side down.

• Place the disc correctly inside the guide on the disc tray.

• Clean the disc.

• Cancel the parental lock function or change the parental lock level.

• These operations may prevent a proper progress of the contents.

• Press and hold the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel for more than about 3 seconds. The DVD video player turns off. Press the button again to turn it on. If the buttons still do not work, disconnect the power plug and insert it into the wall outlet again.

• Point the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD video player.

• Operate the remote control within about 7 m.

• Replace the batteries with new ones.
