2. Prepare cabinet or soffit by tapping holes for mounting filter housings. Figure 2 and Figure 3 show the top view of the VCH36 and VCH54 respectively. Each figure shows mounting hole locations, overall size of filter housing mounting plate, and required clearance for the transition. See Figure 4 for the clearance required for the PLENUM transition in the VCH54 installation.
3. Attach transition to filter housing and seal with duct tape. The VCH36 requires the VCHTR10 transition. The VCH54 requires the VCHTR10 and PLENUM transitions.
4. Attach filter housing to prepare cabinet/soffit surface using wood screws provided. The installation requires two people due to the size of the unit.
5. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS VCH36 for VCH54

IMPORTANT: Save these instructions for the Local Electrical Inspector’s use.
INSTALLER: Please leave these Installation Instructions with this unit for the owner.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
READ AND SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: TO RE-
DUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS, OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:
CAUTION - FOR GENERAL
VENTILATING USE ONLY. DO
NOT USE TO EXHAUST
HAZARDOUS OR EXPLOSIVE
MATERIALS OR VAPORS.
A. Use this unit only in the manner intended
by the manufacturer. If you have questions, contact the manufacturer.
B. Before servicing or cleaning unit, switch
power off at service panel and lock the service disconnecting means to prevent power from being switched on accidentally. When the service disconnecting means cannot be locked, securely fasten a prominent warning device, such as a tag, to the service panel.
WARNING - TO REDUCE THE RISK OF A RANGE TOP GREASE FIRE:
A. Never leave surface units unattened at high
settings. Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite. Heat oils slowly on low or medium settings.
B. Always turn hood ON when cooking at high heat
or when cooking flaming foods.
C. Clean ventilating fans frequently. Grease should
not be allowed to accumulate on fan or filter.
D. Use proper pan size. Always use cookware
appropriate for the size of the surface element.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
VCH36 OR VCH54
FOR RESIDENTIAL USE ONLY
OWNER: Please retain these instructions for future reference.
C. Installation work and electrical wiring
must be done by qualified persons in accordance with all applicable codes & standards, including fire-rated construction.
D. Sufficient air is needed for proper com-
bustion and exhasting of gases through the flue (chimney) of fuel burning equipment to prevent backdrafting. Follow the heating equipment manufacturers guideline and safety standards such as those published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the local code authorities.
WARNING - TO REDUCE THE RISK OF IN-
JURY TO PERSONS IN THE EVENT OF A RANGE TOP GREASE FIRE, OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:
A. SMOTHER FLAMES with a close-fitting lid, cookie
sheet, or metal tray, then turn off the burner. BE CAREFUL TO PREVENT BURNS. If the flames do not go out immediately, EVACUATE AND CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
B. NEVER PICK UP A FLAMING PAN - You may be
burned.
C. DO NOT USE A WATER, including wet dishcloths or
towels - a violent steam explosion will result.
D. Use an extinguisher ONLY if:
1) You have a Class ABC extinguisher, and you already know how to operate it.
2) The fire is small and contained in the area where it started.
3) The fire department is being called.
4) You can fight the fire with your back to an exit.

E. When cutting or drilling into wall or
ceiling, do not damage electrical wiring and other hidden utilities.
F. CAUTION: To reduce risk of fire and to
properly exhast air, be sure to duct air outside. Do not vent exhaust air into spaces within walls, celinings, attics, crawl spaces or garages.
G. WARNING - TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, USE
ONLY METAL DUCT WORK.

VCH36/VCH54 Filter Housing Descriptions
These filter housings have been specially designed to meet the ventilating requirements of our gas and electric cooktops. Each ventilator unit includes a filter housing and lights mounted on the mounting plate.
VCH36
A remote mounted ventilator unit, VTR600R, VTR1000Q or VTR1400Q must be purchased separately. The ventilators require a separate speed control unit, CTR 3Q (purchased separately), and a light switch or light dimmer switch (supplied by the electrical contractor). The VCH54 unit requires a transition model PLENUM (sold separately).

BEFORE INSTALLING PLEASE NOTE:
1. The use of 10" round duct or equivalent rectangular duct is acceptable for zero clearance. A Thermador VCHTR10 transitions from the rectangular hood opening to a 10" diameter duct. Verify the installation will have enough clearance for the transition and ducting.
2 A VCH54 with dual filters requires additional clearance
above the hood for the PLENUM transition. This transition is shown in Figure 4 (back page) transitioning from the VCH54 to the VCHTR10.
3. For the most efficient ducting layout, use a straight run or as few elbows as possible.
4. COLD WEATHER installations should have a backdraft damper installed to minimize backward flow of cold air, and a nonmetallic thermal break to minimize heat loss due to conduction. The damper should be on the cold air side of the thermal break. The break should be as close as possible to the location where the ducting enters the heated portion of the house.
5. Hood installation height above the cooktop is the user's preference. The lower the filter housings are above the cooktop, the more efficient the capture of cooking odors,

grease, and smoke. Thermador recommends installing the hood 30" to 36" above the countertop. The minimum hood installation height is 30". This is the distance from the cooktop to the bottom of the hood not the filter housing.
6. The VTR600R, VTR1400Q and VTR1000Q remote blowers require five wire installations. See Installation Instructions and Wiring Diagram supplied with these units.
7. Electrical power to the hood is for lights only. The light control is supplied by the electrical contractor. The light switch must be a UL listed general switch. Use 75 Watt (maximum) reflector type light bulbs for 120 volts, 60 Hz. The VCH36 has one built-in filter box and two lights. The VCH54 has two built-in filter boxes and three lights. For electrical connections see Page 4, Item 5.
8. DO NOT USE over solid fuel fired barbecue units.
9. If the filter housing is installed in a custom hood made from combustible material make sure that clearances to combustible materials specified in the cooktop installation instructions are satisfied.
1. The VCH36/VCH54 are designed to be installed in a custom hood as shown in Figure 1A. Design of the hood must meet all building code regulations and is the responsibility of the contractor. For optimal performance, the hood should overhand the cooking surface and be installed at a height between 30-36 inches above the cooking surface. Clearance in the hood is needed for opening the front filter housing door to remove the filter for cleaning (See Figure 1B).
