Teledyne Lecroy Corporation Sierra M6-4 and Sierra M6-2 Port Configurations
Reference Manual
1. Introduction
1.1 General
The Sierra M6-4 and Sierra M6-2 systems provide a flexible and capable protocol tool set that can create
real-life setups quickly and simply.
The Sierra M6-4 and Sierra M6-2 systems support five different functions:
o Analyzer
o Host Emulation
o Device Emulation
o Trainer
o Jammer
Depending on the model and your license keys, you can configure each SAS or SATA port to perform one
of these functions. In some combinations, you can configure a port to perform more than one function.
This flexibility results in a large number of port configurations that help you create appropriate test setups.
This document describes how to configure the Sierra ports for useful, common, and supported
port configurations.

1.2 Internal Structure of Sierra M6-4
Sierra M6-4 supports up to four ports, each with Initiator (or Host) and Target (or Device) connections.
The Sierra M6-4 system has two halves, each implementing one or two functions. Each function can
control or work with a port.

The following table describes each function at a port:

Trainer
Jammer
Capture and analysis of traffic
Emulation of ‘Host’ or ‘Initiator’
Emulation of ‘Device’ or ‘Target’
Script-based training of traffic for Initiator/Host or Target/Device
Target/Device
This document uses these symbols to show functions in the Port Configuration.
To configure the system ports, you specify the function at each port. This document describes the
most common and useful configurations. Other configurations either are not useful or are equivalent
to a simpler configuration listed in this document.
Though each function has a specific application user interface, you can set port configuration in the
Port Configuration dialog, which is in all application user interfaces.

1.2.1 Simple Conf igurations
Simple Configurations are port configurations in which each port has only one function or no function.
Some examples of Simple Port Configurations are:
Port is set to Host Emulator function.
Port is set to Analyzer function.
Port is set to Device Emulator function.
The Trainer acts as a Target or Initiator depending on the script.
Port is set to Jammer function.
1.2.2 Composite Configurations
Composite Configurations are port configurations in which some ports have more than one function.
Some examples of Composite Port Configurations are:
Port is set to Host Emulator function. In addition, the Analyzer is set to capture the
protocol traffic streamed through that port.
Port is set to Device Emulator function. In addition, the Analyzer is set to capture the
protocol traffic streamed through that port.
Port is set to Jammer function. In addition, the Analyzer is set to capture the protocol
traffic after jamming.
Port is set to Jammer function. In addition, the Analyzer is set to capture the protocol
traffic before jamming.
Port is set to Jammer function. In addition, the Analyzer is set to capture both the
protocol traffic before jamming and the protocol traffic after the jammer.
Port is set to Trainer function. However, the Jammer can impair the Trainer protocol
traffic on that port.
For additional information on how to operate Teledyne LeCroy’s Sierra systems, please refer to the Sierra M6-4 User Manual or Sierra M6-2 User Manual and other documentation available on the installation CDROM, or in the installation directory after you have installed the software.
1.3 User Interface
The SAS/SATA Protocol Suite application has a Port Configuration dialog. Please refer to the
Sierra M6-4 User Manual or Sierra M6-2 User Manual for how to configure ports.

1.4 Sierra Setup Examples
1.4.1 Example 1: Composite Configuration with Analyzer,
Host Emulation, and Jammer
Ports configuration:
Setup:
Port 1 of Target connects to a drive (DUT 2) by an “Octopus” cable. Using Host Emulator and Analyzer on
Port 1 allows host emulation and analysis on this link. However, this link does not have error injection.
Port 3 of Initiator connects to the Host DUT by a mini-SAS cable.
Port 3 of Target connects to a drive (DUT 1) by an “Octopus” cable.
The Host DUT can talk to a drive (DUT 1) on Port 3 of Target on an “Octopus” cable.
Using Jammer on Port 3 allows traffic corruption on this link. However, this link has no capturing or
analysis.
Description:
Port 1 is configured as a Host Emulator. Port 1 traffic is recorded (analyzed) in both the emulated Host
direction and the received Target direction.
Port 3 is configured to impair or corrupt incoming traffic and output it back. In this configuration, this
traffic is not recorded.
Ports 2 and 4 are not used.

1.4.2 Example 2: Jammer and Two Analyzers on Same Port
Ports configuration:
Setup:
Port 1 of Initiator connects to the Host DUT by a mini-SAS cable. Using Jammer allows error injection on
Port 1. Using Analyzer allows analysis on Port 1 before and after error injection.
Port 1 of Target connects to the Device Under Test (DUT 2) by a single octopus cable.
Description:
Port 1 is configured to jam incoming traffic and output it back.
In addition, the system is internally connected so that one analyzer port on Port 1 is capturing the
incoming (and pre-jammed) traffic, while another analyz er on Port 1 can capture the outgoing
(post-jammed) traffic of physical Port 1.
Ports 2, 3, and 4 are not used.

1.4.3 Example 3: Cascading Two Sierra M6-4 Systems
Ports configuration:
Setup:
For System 1, Port 1 of Initiator connects to the Host DUT by a mini-SAS cable. Using Jammer allows
error injection on Port 1. Using Analyzer allows analysis on Port 1 before and after error injection.
For System 1, Port 1 of Target connects to Port 2 of the Initiator port of System 2 by a mini-SAS cable.
For System 2, Port 2 of Initiator connects to Port 1 of the Target port of System 1 by a mini-SAS cable.
For System 2, Port 1 of Target connects to a Device Under Test (DUT 1) by a single octopus cable.
For System 2, Port 2 of Target connects to a Device Under Test (DUT 2) by a single octopus cable.
Using Jammer allows error injection on Port 2. Using Analyzer allows analysis on Port 2 before and after
error injection.
Description:
Port 1 of System 1 is configured to jam the incoming traffic and output it back. In addition, the system
is internally connected so that one analyzer on Port 1 is capturing the incoming (and pre-jammed)
traffic, while another analyzer on Port 1 can capture the outgoing (post-jammed) traffic of physical Port
1.
Port 2 of System 2 is configured to jam the incoming traffic and output it back. In addition, the system
is internally connected so one analyzer on Port 2 is capturing the incoming (and pre-jammed) traffic,
while another analyzer on Port 2 can capture the outgoing (post-jammed) traffic of physical Port 2.
This configuration allows impairing traffic on both physical ports of DUT1 and DUT2, while capturing
pre-jammed and post-jammed traffic on each.
Ports 3 and 4 on both systems are not used.
