Useful Accessories

For consistently professional performance from your quality tape deck, keep the heads and transport clean—both physically and magnetically-with the TZ-261 cleaner kit

and E-3 head demagnetizer

Adding the optional MX-8 Audio Mixer to your C-1 permits even greater flexibility and professional recording capability. The MX-8 provides four independent mic/line inputs with individual level controls and switchable low cut filters (100 Hz/200 Hz). Pan pots for each channel let you place individual sonic images at any point within the stereo sound field, and a master level control precisely adjusts the overall level of the MX-8 stereo outputs.

If you're familiar with high-quality openreel tape recording equipment, then you know that the three-motor tape transport drive system provides the smoothest, most reliable operation available. And you probably also know that cassette recorders have simply not been able to offer the same level of performance. The C-1 changes all that with a full three-motor transport system incorporating a precision PLL capstan motor and coreless-rotor DC reel motors, providing performance and versatility exceeding many open-reel units.

Dual-Capstan Closed-Loop

The C-1's capstan motor drives two independent capstans via a main drive belt and a coupling belt for perfect rotational accuracy. Since one capstan and pinch roller is located before, and one after, the head assembly, the tape travelling over the heads is completely isolated from the supply and take-up reels, and is maintained at the exact tension for perfect tape-to-head contact.

To avoid problems of tape slippage or uneven drive, the pinch rollers incorporate a special self-adjusting design, assuring even pressure over the entire width of the tape.

PLL Precision

Precision tape speed accuracy is maintained by a phase-locked loop servo system. A reference signal, generated by a fundamental oscillator, is continuously compared to a frequency generated by, and proportional to, the speed of the capstan motor. If even the slightest difference in phase between the two signals is detected, the error is instantly corrected by the servo circuitry.

This system, combined with superior transport design, provides the outstanding low wow and flutter figure of 0.04% (NAB weighted) in the C-1.

Diecast Transport Frame

One of the major faults with many transport assemblies is the basic frame it self. If there is any slack, movement or warpage in the frame, performance suffers severely. Transport operation can become erratic and the heads will slip out of alignment very

The critical sections of the C-1 transport frame, however, are diecast in solid aluminum This means mint-condition performance for the life of the unit, with less adjustments and maintenance.

The C-1 offers a true three-head record/reproduce system. The record and playback heads, individually engineered for optimum characteristics, are incorporated in a single housing. This means that relative alignment will never vary, and the problem of phase differences between heads is eliminated, thanks to their proximity.

The playback head, a unique "Deltaic" design incorporating both magnetic and non-magnetic ferrite materials, assures minimum feedthrough from the record head and eliminates low frequency contour effects.

Real-time monitoring is another big plus with the three-head system, so you know exactly how your recordings are going to sound—as you are recording.

SI Function Control

Advanced digital circuitry assures the smoothest positive operation of all transport functions. Direct switching between functions is possible (e.g. fast forward to rewind) with absolutely no danger of damaging the tape or mechanism. This system also permits use of the optional RC-90 remote control unit. Like the ondeck controls, the RC-90 gives you featherlight, positive control over all functions up to 16 feet away from the deck.

Electromagnetic Reel Braking

For the first time in a cassette deck, the C-1 incorporates the same kind of electromagnetic reel braking found in professional open-reel units. Rather than the usual all-mechanical systems, braking is assisted by applying a reverse voltage to the reel motors. This reduces the possibility of tape damage due to sudden "jerking" stops, and makes operation quieter and smoother.

Servo-Controlled Fast Wind

To further eliminate the possibility of tape tangling, stretching or breakage, the C-1 is equipped with a servo-controlled fast wind system. During fast forward or rewind, the supply reel motor acts as a speed detector/servo to precisely control the wind rate. This unique feature assures perfectly even winding.

Two-Step Pinch Rollers

In the Pause mode, both left and right pinch rollers retract from the capstans slightly while the tape remains in contact with the heads. This permits instantaneous start from the Pause mode, eliminating "thumps" and clicks during operation.

Pitch Control

A rare feature on a cassette deck, this C-1 control lets you "tune" recorded material to a desired pitch (within the control range). This is particularly useful for live recording or rehearsals where it is necessary to match the pitch of the recorded sound to that of the live sound or instrument.

Modular Design

As with all professional units, the C-1's internal circuitry is constructed in easily-replaceable modules. In addition to simplifying maintenance and providing greater flexibility and interchangeability, this type of design permits tighter quality control during manufacture. The result is top performance from every unit. The C-1's 3-dimensional circuit layout also contributes to its slim, compact styling.

State-of-the-Art Electronics

Direct-coupled circuitry in the C-1 provides an unimpeded signal path for maximum waveform fidelity. The Play EQ amplifiers feature carefully selected low-noise components in a differential input/push-pull output configuration for extremely wide available dynamic range. This takes full advantage of the optional dbx noise reduction interface unit.

The line-out amplifiers feature ultra-low distortion thanks to a differential input using matched FETs with current mirro circuitry.

For best live recording results, the microphone preamplifiers are specially designed to provide ultra-low noise and wide dynamic range. Microphone inputs feature switchable -20 dB padding.

Semiconductor switching is employed in the Dolby*, record, monitor and playback sections to minimize audio-carrying leads and provide the shortest possible signal path, and the built-in Dolby circuitry incorporates high-precision resistors and capacitors, plus selected FETs, for ultra-low distortion Dolby processing.

The bias oscillator, a critical part of any magnetic recording system, is powered by a highly-regulated supply for extremely stable operation. Fluctuating environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, etc., have virtually no effect on bias frequency or level.

The list goes on. In fact, each and every part of the C-1 incorporates the most advanced technology to help you make superior recordings easier, and with a minimum of fuss.

Cross-Geared Level Controls

The left and right channel level controls are coupled by a gear and friction clutch system. First, set the desired relative balance between channels, then both can be varied simultaneously by turning either control independently. A real time- and effort-saving feature.

Three-Position Monitor Selector

The C-1 monitor switch has three positions; Source, Cal and Output. In the Source position, input signals are monitored directly. The Cal position provides actual tape-level readout independent of the output level control, while in the Output position, the meters display the level as determined by the output level control setting. This is helpful when using tapes of varying sensitivity.

Fast-Tracking Peak Meters

The professional peak meters employed in the C-1 have an ultra-fast 10-mS rise time over the entire audio spectrum. They accurately display peak levels from as low as -40 dB up to +5 dB over Dolby level for distortion-free recording.

Interchangeable Bias/EQ Card

In addition to the wide range of settings available with the three-stage bias and equalization switches, the C-1 comes equipped with two plug-in Bias/EQ cards for perfect matching with

formulations. The Bias

located under the card module front cover. When re-calibrating cards, the TO-8 test-tone oscillator makes the job quick and easy.

Convenient Cassette Handling

The C-1 cassette compartment is fully lighted for optimum visibility, and features a flywheel-damped eject system for longer cassette and mechanism life. The cassette door is easily removable, providing greater access to heads and mechanism for cleaning and demagnetizing. To assure perfect tension and tape-tohead contact, a special system automatically takes up slack in the tape

Optional dbx Interface

The electronics, rack-mounting dimensions and styling of the C-1 are a perfect match for the optional RX-8 dbx noise reduction interface. The RX-8 can almost double available dynamic
