Targus ACW10US Quick Start Manual

wifi scout hot spot locator
Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the Targus WiFi Scout. Radio frequency signals are, by their nature, variable in strength and coverage. This small and compact device helps you identify the best place for accessing the wireless Internet.
Fe at u re s
• Locate hotspot (2.4GHz, 802.11b/802.11g Wireless Internet Access Point) without opening your notebook computer
• Quickly locate hotspots up to 160 feet away
• Easy operation - Just push one button to activate the 60-second detection process
• Easy-to-read indicators displays the area's signal strength
• Small, lightweight design that can be carried on a keychain
Using the WiFi Scout
Press the button once and the device will begin searching for the WiFi signal. After a few seconds, observe the signal as per the indications below:
Red LED keeps FLASHING - There is little or no (802.11b/802.11g) wireless signal detected. This signifies
that the area you are in is not favorable for wireless Internet connection.
Red LED stays ON - A weak wireless signal is detected. This is a sign that a wireless connection may be
possible, but it may not be stable.
Both Red and Yellow LEDs stay ON - A good wireless signal is detected. This implies that the area is favor-
able for accessing a wireless Internet connection.
All three Red, Yellow & Green LEDs stay ON - A strong wireless signal is detected. This indicates that you
are situated in an area that is ideal for accessing a wireless Internet connection.
Once the button is pressed, the WiFi Scout will search for one minute. After this timeframe the WiFi Scout will automatically stop detection.
NOTE: A strong signal does not indicate the network is open and publicly accessible. The network could have WEP, WPA, or other methods of security enabled that could prevent access.
Replacing the Batteries
If the detection distance is weaker than usual, this may indicate that the batteries need to be replaced. To open the battery cover, remove the screws at the back.
NOTE: The detection distance may vary according to environmental differences. The signal strength displayed by the wireless connection monitor on your PC will not necessarily match the signal strength indicated by the WiFi Scout. Your PC can detect WiFi signals at a greater range than the WiFi Scout.
For best performance, please hold the unit from one corner to allow the internal antenna a clear path.
