Service Information
Important: Properly purging u-joint lubricant during vehicle preventative maintenance service is critical to ensure long
service life of the vehicle driveline components. Proper lube purging is evident by fresh grease exiting all four
cup seals (white arrows) when grease pressure is applied to the u-joint grease zerk fitting. This procedure will replenish
the bearing cups with fresh grease, while pushing contaminants and air pockets out of the u-joint. Failure to properly
purge the u-joint can cause premature failure and possible driveshaft exiting from the vehicle.

Important: To determine driveshaft lubrication intervals, accurate driveshaft model identification is required.
The following pictures and descriptions will aid in this process.
Picture 1 Picture 2
Picture 3 Picture 4
10-Series - Can be identified by the slip yoke (picture 1) having no boot and the grease zerk fitting located between
the u-joint bearing caps (picture 3, left side).
Spicer Life Series – Can be identified by the booted slip member (picture 2) and the grease zerk fitting located at
the center of the u-joint cross with hard plastic bearing cup seals.
Spicer Life XL Series – From the outside looks the same as the standard SPL Life Series, but will have a black
plastic cap over the grease zerk fitting (picture 4) and soft boot bearing cup seals (picture 3, right side). To grease
this XL Series, simply remove the black plastic cap and properly purge the u-joint with lubricant.
