Before you start
Pictures, sounds, themes, Web pages, games, applications and other files are saved in File manager
in your phone. You can also exchange files between your phone and a computer. For this you need
a connection via infrared or a USB cable.
Handling files in the phone
From the File manager you can:
• View information and memory status of files and folders in the phone.
• Free memory in the phone.
• Browse, move, copy, edit, sort and send files.
• Use a file as a ringtone, alarm signal, message alert or contact ringtone.
If all available memory is full, you cannot save any files until content is removed % 3Memory
information. Files that your phone cannot recognize are saved in the Other folder % 8 Related
information.

File information
To view file and folder information
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file or a folder and select More > Information.
Copyright-protected files
Items that are downloaded or received using one of the available transfer methods, may be copyrightprotected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). Such items normally have a key icon in front of the file
name. If a file is protected, you may not be able to copy, send or transfer that file. You can see if a file is
copyright-protected and view other information about it in your phone.
To view copyright information for a file
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Information. If the file is copyright-protected, Limited is displayed.
If not, Unlimited is displayed.
Memory information
To view memory status
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Select More > Memory status.
To free memory in the phone
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file or a folder and select More > Delete.
You can delete several files at the same time % 3 Working with the file structure.
Working with the file structure
To move a file
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Move to move the file.
3. Scroll to a folder and select Paste.
To copy a file
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Copy to copy the file.
3. Scroll a folder and select Paste.
To rename a file or a folder
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file or a folder and select More > Rename.
3. Enter a new name and select OK.
Some files and folders cannot be renamed.

To create a subfolder
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Select More > New folder and enter a name for the folder.
3. Select OK to save the folder.
To select several files
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Select More > Mark > Mark several.
3. Scroll to select files and select Mark or Unmark.
To select all files in a folder
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Select More > Mark > Mark all.
To delete a file
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Delete.
Some files cannot be deleted.

To send a file
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Send.
3. Select a transfer method.
To sort files in a folder
1. From standby select Menu > File manager and open a folder.
2. Select More > Sort by and select how to sort the files.
To use a file as a ringtone, alarm signal or message alert
1. From standby select Menu > File manager.
2. Scroll to a file and select More > Use as.
3. Select how you want to use the file (as a ringtone, as an alarm signal, as a message alert or
as a contact ringtone).

Connecting with a computer
You need to establish a connection between your phone and the computer. You can do this using a USB
cable or the infrared port.
Connecting using a USB cable
To connect using the USB cable
1. Make sure your phone is turned on.
2. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer.
3. Computer: If Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click Cancel to exit the wizard.
4. Phone: Select File transfer.
5. Wait for your phone to prepare for file transfer.
6. Computer: Your phone memory is added as a removable disk in Windows® Explorer.
7. Computer: If you receive a question about what you want to do with the files on the removable disk,
select Take no action.
Do not disconnect the USB cable when transferring files as this may harm the phone memory.
For safe disconnection of the USB cable, right-click the Removable Disk icon in Windows Explorer
and select Eject. A message appears in your phone when it is safe to disconnect the cable from the
phone.

Before you connect your phone to a computer, the infrared device in the computer must be installed
and working properly. See the manufacturer’s product documentation.
To save the phone battery, turn off infrared after you have used it.
To connect your phone to a computer using the infrared port
1. Phone: Turn on infrared. From standby select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Infrared port > On.
2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port.
3. Phone: Place the phone close to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other.
4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name
the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears.
5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue.
6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field.
7. Click Finish to close the wizard.
If the procedures, terms and application names are different depending on the brand and model
of the infrared device in the computer, see the manufacturer’s product documentation.
To turn off infrared
• From standby select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Infrared port > Off.
Transferring files
You can transfer files when you have established a connection between the phone and the computer.
To transfer files using Windows® Explorer
1. Connect your phone and computer and select File transfer in your phone.
2. Select the file you want to transfer. (Select several files by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files.)
3. Copy and paste your file, or drag and drop it, into the desired folder on your computer or in your
phone. When the files have been transferred to a computer, you can delete these files in your phone
to free memory.

Troubleshooting
Problems may occur when the computer and the phone do not connect properly. See below for possible
solutions.
Troubleshooting USB connection
If you experience problems with the USB connection, the COM port speed might be too high.
To set the COM port speed
1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT) and
double-click the item Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management.
2. Select Port Settings and set the speed to no higher than 115 200 bps.
3. Try to connect again.
Troubleshooting infrared connection
If you experience problems with the infrared connection, this section offers some basic solutions.
To solve infrared connection problems
1. Check that your phone is aligned with the infrared port on your computer.
2. Check that the infrared port is turned on in your phone.
You should see an infrared icon on the phone screen and one in the computer taskbar.
2. Right-click the infrared port in use and select Properties.
3. Select Advanced/Maximize connect rate and set the value to no higher than 115 200 bps.
4. Try to connect again.
Problems finding transferred files
Make sure you have put your files in the correct folder in your phone. For example, put images
in the Image folder, put sound files in the Sounds folder. Files that are placed in the wrong folder
may not be visible in your phone.
You cannot view the transferred files in your phone until you have removed the USB cable
from the phone.
