Precautions

Safety

• Operate the unit only on 120 V AC, 60 Hz.

• If anything falls into the cabinet, unplug the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

• This unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off.

• Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if you do not intend to use it for an extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug, never by the cord.

• One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the purpose of safety and will fit into the power outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your Sony dealer.

Installing

• Do not install the unit in a confined space su ch as a book or similar unit.

• Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat buildup.

• Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs, blankets, etc.) or near materials (curtains, draperies) that may block the ventilation slots.

• Do not install the unit near heat sources such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mech anical vibration o r shock.

• Do not install the unit in an inclined position. It is designed to be operated in a horizontal position only.

• Keep the unit and cassettes away fro m equipment with strong magnets, such as microwave o ven s o r large loudspeakers.

• Do not place heavy objects on the unit.

• If the unit is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, moisture may condense inside the VCR and cause damage to the video head and tape. When you first install the unit, or when you move it from a cold to a warm location, wait for about three hours before operating the unit.

Use

Power sources

This set should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of electrical power supplied to your home, consult your dealer or local power company. For those sets designed to operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating instructions.

Grounding or Polarization

This set is equipped with a polarized ac power cord plug (a plug h aving one blade wider than t he other), or with a three-wire grounding type plug (a plug having a third pin for grounding). Follow the instructions below:

For the set with a polarized ac power cord plug:

This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to have a suitable outlet installed. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug by forcing it in.

For the set with a three-wire grounding type ac plug:

This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to have a suitable outlet installed. Do not defeat the safe ty purpose of the grounding plug.

Overloading

Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords or convenience receptacles b eyond their ca pacity, since this can result in fire or electric shock.

Object and Liquid Entry

Never pu sh ob jec ts of any kin d into the set through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that c ould result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the set.

Attachments

Do not use attachments not recommended by the manufactu rer, as they may cause hazards.

Cleaning

Unplug the set from the wall outlet before cleaning or polishing it. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a cloth lightly dampened with water for cleaning the exterior of the set.

Installation

Water and Moisture

Do not use power-line operated sets near water - for exampl e, near a bathtub, washbowl, ki tchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, etc.

Power-Cord Protection

Route the power cord so that it is not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to the plugs, receptacles, and the point where the cord exits from the appliance.

Accessories

Do not place the set on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The set may fall, causing serious injury to a child or an adult, and serious damage to the set. Use only a cart stand tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer.

An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven su rfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn.

Ventilation

The slots and openings in the cabinet are pro vided for necessary v entil atio n. To ensure reliable operation of the set, and to protect it from overheating, these slots and openings must never be blocked or covered.

• Never cover the slots and openings with a cloth or other materials.

• Never block the slots and openings by placing the set on a bed, sofa, rug or oth er simila r surface.

Antennas Outdoor antenna grounding

If an outdoor antenna or cable system is installed, follow the precautions below.

An outdoor antenna system should not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits, or where it can come in contact with such power lines or circuits. WHEN INST ALLING AN OUT DOOR ANTENN A SYSTEM, EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE T AKEN TO KEEP FROM CONTACTING SUCH POWER LINES OR CIRCUITS AS CONTACT WITH THEM IS ALMOST INVARIABL Y FATAL. Be sure the antenna system is grounded so as to provide some protection a gainst vol tage surges and built-up static charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code provides information with respect to proper ground ing of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge un it , si ze of gro und i n g conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.

Lightning

For added prot e ction for this set during a lightni ng storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the set due to lightning and power-line surges.

Getting Started

Step 1 : Unpacking

Check that you have received the following items with the VCR:

• Remote commander

• Size AA (R6) batteries

• 75-ohm coaxial cable with F-type connectors

Check your model name

The instructions in this manual are for the 2 models: SLV-N750 and SLV-N650. Check your model name by look ing at the rear panel o f your VCR. SLV-N750 is the model used for illu strat ion purpose s.

Step 2 : Setting up the remote commander

Inserting the batteries

Insert two size AA (R6) batteries by matching the + an d – on the batteries to the diagram inside the battery compartment.

Insert the negative (–) end first, then push in and down until the positive (+) end clicks into position.

Using the remote commander

You can use this remote commander to operate this VCR and a Sony TV. Buttons on the remote commander marked with a dot (•) can be used to operate your Sony TV.

If the TV does not h ave the symbol near the remote sensor, this remote commander will not operate the TV.

Notes

• With normal use, the batteries should last about three to six months.

• If you do not use the remote commander for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from batter y le akage.

• Do not use a new battery with an o ld on e.

• Do not use different types of batteries.

• Do not leave the remote commander in an extremely hot or humid place.

• Do not drop any foreign object into th e re mote casing, particularly whe n re pla c ing the batteries.

• Do not expose the remote sensor to dire ct light from the sun or lighting apparatus. Do ing so may cause a malfunction.

Controlling other TVs with the remote commander

The remote commander is preprogramed to control non-Sony TVs. If your TV is listed in the following table, set the appro pri ate manufacturer’s code number.

Set •TV / VIDEO at the top of the remote commander to •TV.

Hold down ?/1, and enter your TV’s code number using the n umber buttons.

Then release ?/1.

Now you can use the ?/1, VOL +/–, CH +/–, and TV/VID EO buttons to co ntrol your TV. You can also use the buttons marked with a dot (•) to control a Sony TV. To control the VCR, reset •TV

/ VIDEO to VIDEO.

• If you enter a new code number, the code numb er previously entered will be era sed.

• If the TV uses a different remote control system from the one programed to work with the

VCR, you cannot contro l your TV with the remote comma nder.

• When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the code number may change. Set

the appropriate code number every time you replace the batteries.

• When you press the AUDIO MONITOR button, your TV’s menu may appear on th e TV

screen. To exit the TV menu, press the MENU button on the TV remote commander or wait until the menu disappea r s automatical l y.

Step 3 : Hookups

Selecting the best hookup option

There are many ways in which your VCR can be hooked up. To hook up your VCR so that it works best for you, first scan through the table below. Then use the accompanying diagrams and procedures on the following pages to set up your VCR.

If your TV has audio/video inputs, refer to page 12 for audio/video (A/V) hookup. Then follow one of the hookups below. If your TV does not have A/V inputs, perform directly one of the hookups below.

After you have completed the connections, follow the instructions for setup. After you have completed the setup, you are ready to use your VCR. Procedures

Before you get started

• Turn off the power to all equipment.

• Do not connect the AC power cords until all of the connections are completed. If you connect t he A C po w er cor d befor e the co nnect ions are co mpleted, you m ay not be able to use the Plug and Play function.

• Be sure you make connections firmly. Loose connections may cause picture distortion.

• If your TV does not match any of the examples provided, see your nearest Sony dealer or qualified technician.

Caution

Connections betw een the VCR’s VHF/UHF connector and t he antenna terminals of the T V receiver should be made only as shown in the following instructions. Failure to do so may result in operation that violates the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission regarding the use and operation of RF devices. Never connect the output of the VCR to an antenna or make simultaneous (parallel) antenna and VCR connect ion s at the antenna terminals of your receiver.

Note to CATV system installer (in USA)

This reminder is p rovided to call th e C ATV system installer’ s attention to Article 820- 40 of th e NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practi cal.

Audio/video (A/V) hookup

If your TV has audio/video (A/V) inpu t j ack s, yo u will g et a bette r p ic ture a n d so un d if you hook up your VC R using these connections. For a true “home theater” experience, you should connect the audio outputs of your VCR or TV to your stereo system. If your TV does not have A/V inputs, see the following pages for antenna or cable hookups.

If you are not planning to use your VCR to record programs, you finished setting up the VCR after you have made the connections shown on this page. If you want to record regular or cable TV programs, complete these connections first, and then go to the following pages for antenna or cable hookups.

If your antenna cable is a flat cable (300-ohm twin lead cable), attach an external antenna connector (not supplied) so you can connect the cab le to the RF IN connector. If you have separate cables for VHF and UHF antennas, you should use a U/V band mixer (not suppli ed) (page 51).

Hookup 1 : VCR setup

Plug the VCR into the AC outlet.

The VCR automatically presets the VCR’s clock and TV channels when the VCR is plugged into the AC outlet.

Step 4 : Selecting a language

You can change the on-screen display language.

Before you start…

• Turn on the VCR and the TV.

• Set the “VCR Output CH” to “3CH” or “4CH” in ADVANCED OPTIONS menu (page 47). If both are used, set the “VCR Output CH” to either channel. If your TV is connected to the VCR using A/V connections, set the TV to video input.

• Press TV/VIDEO to display the VCR indicator in the VCR’s display window.

Step 5 : Setting the clock

Using the Auto Clock Set feature

Some TV and cable chann els transmit time signals with their broadcasts. Your VCR can pick up this time signal to automatically set the clock.

The Auto Clock Set feature works only if a channel in your area is broadcasting a time signal. If broadcasters in your area are no t yet sending time signals, set the time manually (page 22).

Before you start…

• T urn on the VCR and the TV . When using a cable box, turn it on.

• Press TV/VIDEO to display the VCR indicator in the VCR’s display window.

• The clock cannot be set auto m at ic al ly if you do not receive a channel that carries a time signal in your area. If so, set the clock ma nually (page 22).

• If there are only a few channels in your area that carry time signals, setting the clock automatically may take up to about 20 minutes. If nothing happens even after you wait about 20 minutes, set the clock manually (page 22).

• If you made Hookup 3, make sure you le ave the cable box on.

This VCR is capable of receiving VHF channels 2 to 13, UHF channels 14 to 69 and unscrambled CATV channels 1 to 125. First, we recommend that you preset the receivable channels in your area using automatic presetting methods. Then, if there are any unwanted channels, disable them manually. If you have already decided which channels you wish to preset, set them direct ly usi ng manual presetting methods (page 26).

To play a recently watched scene

You can immediately rewind and playback the scene you want to watch again. During playback, press REPLAY. The VCR rewinds the tape about ten seconds on

the counter for each press of the button, and res ta r ts p layback.

To skip playback

You can skip a portion of playback you do not want to watch (such as a commercial) and restart playback.

During playback, press COMMERCIAL SKIP up to four times. The VCR skips the tape 30 seconds on the coun ter for each press of the button, and restarts playback.

To turn off the power while rewinding (Rewind Shut Off)

Press ?/1 while the tape is rewinding. The power will turn off but the tape will keep rewinding until it reaches the end.

To use the time counter

Press CLEAR at the point on the tape that you want to find later. The counter in the display window resets to “00:00” or “0:00.” To search for the counter 0:00:00 point automatically, see “To search for the counter 0:00:00 point” on page 45.

To display the counter on the TV screen, press DISPLAY.

Notes

• Tapes recorded in the LP mode on other VCRs can be played back on this VCR but the picture quality ca nnot be guaranteed.

• While displaying a menu on the TV screen, you cannot use H PLAY, X PAUSE, M FF, m REW, or x STOP buttons.

• The counter resets to “00:00” or “0:00” (in the display window) or “0:00:00” (on the TV screen) whenever a tape is reinserted.

• The counter stops counting when it comes to a porti on wit h no rec ordi ng.

• When 10 hours have passed, the counter in the display window returns to “0:00” and the count starts over again.

• When playback does not start even if you insert a tape w ith it s safet y t ab re m oved, set “Auto play” in the ADVANCED OPTIONS menu correctly (page 47).

• This VCR can also play S-VHS tape s. The V CR will automatically identify t he type of ta pe inserted in the VCR (either VHS o r S-VHS). When S-V HS t apes are played i n the VCR, the enhanced resolution wil l not be visi ble on screen; there may also be pictur e distortion while playing the S-VHS tape in slow motion or while utilizing other special playback modes. The VCR will not record in S-VHS mode on an S-VHS tape.

To watch another TV program while recording

If your TV is connected to the VCR using A/V con nect ions, set the TV to the

TV’s antenna input; if not, skip this step. Select another channel on the TV.

To save a recording

To prevent accidental erasure, break off the safety tab as illustrated. To record on the tape again, cover the tab hole with adhesive tape.

Tips

• To select a channel, you can use the number buttons on t he remote commander. Enter the channel number, then press ENTER.

• You can select a video source from the LINE IN 1 or LINE -2 IN ja c ks usin g the INPU T SELECT button.

• The display appears on the TV screen indicating informati on a bout the tape, but the information will not be recorded on the tape.

• If you do not want to watch TV while recording, you can turn off the TV. When using a cable box, make sure to leave it on.

To use the Auto Tape Speed function

When you are recording a program in the SP mode and the remaining tape becomes shorter than the recording time, the tape speed is automatically changed to the EP mode. Note that some noise will appear on the picture when the tape speed is changed. If you want to keep the tape speed , select SP. To operate this function, set “T ape select” in the ADVANCED OPTIONS menu correctly (page 47).

To use the VCR after setting the timer

To use the VCR before a timer recording begins, just press ?/1. The TIMER indicator disappears from the display window and the VCR switches on. Remember to press ?/1 to reset the VCR to th e timer recording standby mode after using the VCR.

You can also do the following tasks while the VCR is recording:

• Reset the counter (page 30).

• Display tape information on the TV screen (page 32).

• Check the timer setting s (page41).

• Watch another TV program (page 33).

Locking the VCR (Child Lock)

After you have set the time r, you can lock all of the buttons on the VCR so that the settings are not canceled by mistake.

To lock the VCR

When the VCR is turned on, hold down ?/1 POWER on the VCR until “LOC” appears in the display window. The VCR turns off and th e TIMER indica tor remains lit if there is a timer setting. The VCR will not work except for timer recordings.

To unlock the VCR

Hold down ?/1 POWER on the VCR until “LOC” disappears from the display window. The VCR is unlocked and turns on.

To stop timer recording while the VCR is locked, press x STOP. The recording stops and the VCR is unlocked.

Recording stereo programs

When you receive a program broadcast in stereo, press AUDIO MONITOR to display STEREO on the TV screen. You can also select LEFT, RIGHT, or MONO. If there is noise in the stereo program, select MONO. The sound will be recorded in monaural (on both hi-fi and normal audio tracks) but with less noise.

Recording bilingual programs

Press AUDIO MONITOR to display “SAP” on the TV screen. When a SAP (Second Audio Program) is received, “SAP” appears on the TV screen. When MAIN is selected, the VCR records only the main sound.

Adjusting the picture (tracking)

Although the VCR automatically adjusts the tracking when playing a tape, distortion may occur if the recording is in poor condition. In this case, manually adjust the tracking.

Press TRACKING +/– on th e VCR to display the tracking meter. The distortion should disappear as you press one of the two tracking buttons. To resume automatic tracking adjustment, eject the tape and reinsert it.

Setting the RF Output channel

When connecting the VCR to the TV using only the antenna cable, you must set the “VCR Output CH” in the ADVANCED OPTIONS menu so that the TV can receive the correct signal from the VCR.

Attaching the external antenna connector

When using a 300-ohm t w in lead cable for a VHF/UHF antenna, use an antenna connector (not supplied) to connect t he antenna to the VCR.

Loosen the screws on the antenna connect or.

Wind the twin leads around the screws on the antenna connector.

Retighten the screws.

Attaching a UHF/VHF band mixer

When using bo th a 75 -oh m co axi al ca ble an d a 300-ohm twin lead cable for a VHF/UHF antenna, use a UHF/VHF band sepa rat or/ mixer (not supplied) to connect the antenna to the VCR.

• Connect the AC power cord securely.

• Make sure the VCR is not locked. To unlock, hold down ?/1 (on/standby) POWER on the VCR disappears.

• Moisture condensation has occurred. Turn the power off, unplug the AC power cord and leave the VCR to dry for over three hours.

• The clock stops if the VCR is disconnected from the wall outlet for more than one minute. Reset the clock (and timer).

• Make sure the TV is se t to the channel for th e V CR. If you are using a monitor, set it to video input.

• The video heads are dirty (see the last page of “Troubleshooting”). Clean the video he ads using a Sony video head cleaning cassette. If a Sony cleaning cassette is not available in your area, have the hea ds cleaned at your nearest Sony dealer (a standard service fee will be charged). Do not use a commercially available liquid type cleaning cassette, as it may damage the video heads.

• The video heads may have to be replaced. Consult your local Sony dealer for more information.

• Adjust the ver tical hold con tr ol on the TV or m o nitor.

• If you made A/V connections, check the audio cable connection.

• Make sure the TV is se t to the channel for th e V CR. If you are using a monitor, set it to video input.

• Select the correct source with the INP U T S ELECT or CH +/– buttons. Select a channel number when recording TV programs; select “L1” or “L2” when recording from other equipment.

• The safety tab has been removed. To record on this tape, cover the tab hole.

• Check that the safety tab has not been removed.

• Make sure the tape is not at its end.
