1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are “pinched” or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.

HOW TO EJECT THE CASSETTE TAPE
(If the tape is stuck in the unit)

1) Turn the Gear Worm 1 clockwise in the direction of arrow with a screwdriver. (See Fig. 2) (Other method ; Remove the screw of Motor Load Ass’y, Separate the Motor Load Ass’y)
2) When Slider S, T approached the unloading position, rotate holder Clutch counterclockwise after inserting screwdriver in the frame’s bottom hole in order to wind the unwound tape. (Refer to Fig. 3) (If you rotate Gear Worm 1 continuously when tape is in state of unwinding, you may cause tape contamination by grease and tape damage. Be sure to wind the unwound tape in the state of set horizontally.)
3) Rotate Gear Worm 1 clockwise using screwdriver again up to the state of eject mode and then pick out the tape. (Refer to Fig. 2)

If the plug supplied with your VCR does not fit your power outlet, attach the supplied adaptor to the plug.
Check your model name
The instructions in this manual are for the 4 models: SLV-LX700S MX/CS, SLV-LX600S MX and SLV-LX500 MX. Check your model name by looking at the rear panel of your VCR. SLV-LX700S MX is the mod el used for illustration purposes. Any di fference in o peration is clearly indicated in the text, for example, “SLV-LX700S MX only.”

Step 2 : Setting up the remote commander
Inserting the batteries
Insert two size AA (R6) batteries by matching the + and – on the batteries to the diagram inside the battery compartment.
Insert the negative (–) end first, then push in and down until the positive (+) end clicks into position.
Using the remote commander
You can use this remote commander to operate this VCR and a Sony TV. Buttons on the remote commander marked with a dot (•) can be used to operate your Sony TV.
If the TV does not have the symbol near the remote sensor, this remote commander will not operate the TV.

Unpacking
Controlling other TVs with the remote commander (not available on SLV-LX500)
The remote commander is preprogramed to control non-Sony TVs. If your TV is listed in the following table, set the appropriate manufacturer’s code number.
Set •TV / VIDEO at the top of the remote commander to •TV.

Hold down ?/1, and enter your TV’s code number using the number buttons.

Then release ?/1.
Now you can use the ?/1, VOL (volumen) +/–, CH (canal) +/–, and TV/VIDEO buttons to control your TV. You can also use the buttons marked with a dot (•) to control a Sony TV. To control the VCR, reset •TV

•If you enter a new code number, the code number previously entered will be eras ed.
•If the TV uses a different remote control system from the one programed to work with th e VCR, you cannot control your TV with the remote commander.
•When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the code nu mber may change. Set the appropriate code number every time you replac e the batteries.

Selecting the best hookup option
Q
There are many ways in which your VCR can be hooked up. To hook up your VCR so that it works best for you, first scan through the table below. Then use the accompanying diagrams and procedures o n the following pages to set up your VCR.
If your TV has audio/video inputs, refer to pages 9 and 10 for audio/video (A/V) hookup. Then follow one of the hookups below. If your TV does not have A/V inputs, do directly to one of the hookups below.

After you have completed the connections, follow the instructions for setup. After you have completed the setup, you are re ady to use your VCR. Procedures

Before you get started
•Turn off the power to all equipment.
•Do not connect the AC power cords until all of the connections are completed. If you connect the AC power cord before the connections are completed, you may not be able to use the Plug and Play (enchufar y ajustar) function.
•Be sure you make connections firmly. Loose connections may cause picture distortion.
• If your TV does not match any of the examples provided, see your nearest Sony dealer or qualified technician.

You can change the o n-screen display language.
Before you start…
•Turn on the VCR and the TV.
•Set the “Salida video” to “ 3CH (canal3)” or “4CH (canal4)” in the OPCIONES AVANZADAS menu, whichever channel is not used in your area. If both are used, set the “Salida video” to either channel (page 47). If your TV is connected to the VCR using A/V connections, set the TV to video input.
•Press TV/VIDEO to display the VIDEO indicator in the VCR’s display window.

Step 6 : Presetting channels
This VCR is capable of receiving VHF channels 2 to 13, UHF channels 14 to 69 and unscrambled CATV channels 1 to 125. First, we recommend that you preset the receivable channels in your area using automatic presetting methods. Then, if there are any unwanted channels, disable them manually. If you have already decided which channels you wish to preset, set them directly using manual presetting methods (page 21).
Presetting all receivable channels automatically
Before you start…
•Turn on the VCR and the TV. When using a cable box, turn it on.
•Set the “Salida video” to “3CH (canal3)” or “4CH (canal4)” in the OPCIONES AVANZADAS menu, whichever channel is not used in your area. If both are used, set the “Salida video” to either channel (page 47). If your TV is connected to the VCR using A/V connections, set the TV to video input.
•Press TV/VIDEO to display the VIDEO indicator in the VCR’s display window.

To p lay a recently watched scene
You can imm ediately rewind and playback the scene you want to watch again. During playback, press REPLAY (repetición). The VCR rewinds the tape about ten
seconds on the counter for each press of the button, and restarts playback.
To s ki p playback
You can skip a po rtion of playback you do not want to watch (such as a commercial) and restart playback.
During playback, press COMMERCIAL SKIP (omisión de anuncios) up to four times. The VCR skips the tape 30 seconds on the counter for each press of the button, and restarts playback.
To turn off the power while rewinding (Rewind Shut Off)
Press ?/1 while the tape is rewinding. The power will turn off but the tape will keep rewinding until it reaches the end.

To u se the time counter
Press CLEAR (cancelación) at the point on the tape that you want to find later. The counter in the display window resets to “00:00” or “0:00.” To search for the counter 0:00:00 point automatically, see “To search for the counter 0:00:00 point” on page 44.
To display the counter on the TV screen, press DISPLAY (indicación).
Notes
•Tapes recorded in the LP mode on other VCRs can be played back on this VC R but the picture quality cannot be guaranteed.
•While displaying a menu on the TV screen, you cannot use H PLAY (reproducción), X PAUSE (pausa), M FF (avance rápido), m REW (rebobinado), or x STOP (parada) buttons.
•The counter resets to “00:00” or “0:00” (in the display window) or “0:00:00” (on the TV screen) whenever a tape is reinserted.
•The counter stops counting when it comes to a portion with no recording.
•When 10 hours have passed, the counter in the display window returns to “0:00” and the count starts over again.
•When playback does not start even if you insert a tape with its safety tab removed, set “Auto­reproducción” in the OPCIONES AVANZADAS menu correctly (page 46).
Turning on the VCR and TV, and starting playback automatically (Trinitron TV Synchro Play)
You can only use this function if your TV is made by Sony (Trinitron TV).
How to connect to use this function
Connect the VCR and TV with the audio/video cable (see “Audio/video (A/V) hookup” on pages 9 and 10). Be sure to connect the audio/video cable to the VIDEO IN 1 (entrada de video 1) jacks on the TV if the TV has two inputs or more. The TV must be placed where it will respond to the remote commander while you are pointing it at the VCR.
Operation
Make sure that the TV’s power is in standby mode. Press TRINITRON TV SYNCHRO PLAY (reproducción sincronizada de TV
Trinitron) and hold the remote commander in place for about two seconds. The VCR and TV turn on, and the TV is set to the video channel. If there is a tape in
the VCR, playback starts automatically.
Notes
•If the Trinitron TV Synchro Play function does not work properly: –Wait a few moments, and press the button again. –Replace both of the batteries with new ones, and press the button again. Note that this function may not operate some Sony TVs because of the remote commander’s signal limitations.
•Do not press TRINITRON TV SYNCHRO PLAY (reproducción sincronizada de TV Trinitron) during playback. If you do so, the TV’s input source will mom entarily switch to the TV’s tuner.

To save a recording
To prevent accidental erasure, break off the safety tab as illustrated. To record on the tape again, cover the tab hole with adhesive tape.
Tips
•To select a channel, you can use the number buttons on th e remote commander. Enter the channel number, then press ENTER (introducción).
•You can select a video source from the LI NE IN 1 (entrada de línea 1) or LINE-2 IN (entrada de línea 2) jacks using the INPUT SELECT (selección de entrada) button.
•The display appears on th e TV screen indicating information about the tape, but the information will not be recorded on the tape.
• If you do not want to watch TV while recording, you ca n turn off the TV. When using a cable box, make sure to leave it on.
Notes
•The remaining tape length may not be indi cated accurately for short tapes such as T-20 or T­30, or tapes recorded in the LP mode.
•The display does n ot appear during still (pause) mode or slow-motion playback .
•It may take up to one minute for the VCR to calculate and display the remaining tape length after you press DISPLAY (indicación).

The Dial Timer function allows you to make timer recordings of programs without turning on your TV. Set the recording timer to record up to eight programs that will be broadcast within a month using the DIAL TIMER (temporizador dial). The recording start time and recording stop ti me can be set at one minute intervals.

Notes
• If eight programs have already been set using the manual timer setting, “FULL” appears in the display window for about five seconds.
•The TIMER (temporizador) setting in step 9 on page 31 with no tape inserted.
•When the setting time is incorrect, “Err” appears in the display window in step 9. Set the timer again from step 1.
•You c annot set the tape speed to “AUTO” using the DIAL TIMER (temporizador dial). To select “AUTO,” set the “VEL” position in “Prog./Verif.”
About the Demonstration Mode
The DIAL TIMER (temporizador dial) function has a Demo nstration Mode that allows the user, such as a salesperson, to enter more than eight examples of timer settings when demonstrating t he use of the DIAL TIMER (temporizador dial). It cancels the FULL notice which appears if eight programs have already been set. Do not use the Demonstration Mode for making timer recordings. Doing so may cause the settings to be inaccurate.
To a ctivate the Demonstration Mode
Press X PAUSE (pausa) on the VCR dial). “DEMO” appears in the display window for a few seconds.
To cancel the Demonstration Mode
Turn t he power off and unplug the AC power cord. Although the Demonstration Mode is canceled, the timer settings entered while using the Demonstration Mode will remain. Be sure to manually cancel the timer settings before you use the Dial Timer or any other timer method after reconnecting the AC power cord (page 40).

To use the Auto Tape Speed function
When you are recording a program in the SP mode and the remaining tape becom es shorter than the recording time, the tape speed is automatically changed to the EP mode. Note that some noise will appear on the picture when the tape speed is changed. If you want to keep the tape speed, select SP. To operate this function, set “Selc. de cinta” in the OPCIONES AVANZADAS menu correctly (page 46).
Tips
•To set the channel, you can also use the CH (canal) +/– or number buttons.
•To show the “Prog./Verif.,” you can use the MENU button. Press MENU, press
move the cursor (B) to “Prog./Verif.,” then press OK (aceptación).
•If the indicator appears, the ti mer settings overlap. To check, change or cancel the program setting, see “Checking/c hanging/canceling timer settings” on pa ge 40.
•If the indicator appears, this means that the VCR is currently recording this program.

To l ock the VCR
When the VCR is turned on, hold down ?/1 POWER (alimentación) on the VCR until “LOC” appears in the display window. The VCR turns off and the TIMER (temporizador) indicator remains lit if there is a timer setting. The VCR will not work except for timer recordings.
To unlock the VCR
Hold down ?/1 POWER (alimentación) on the VCR the display window. The VCR is unlocked and turns on.
To stop timer recording while the VCR is locked, press x STOP (parada). The recording stops and the VCR is unlocked.
Note
•The VCR will be unlocked when:
–You stop timer recording by pressing x STOP (par ada). –You insert a tape. –The AC power cord is disconnected or power supply stops.

Setting the recording duration time
After you have started recording, you can have the VCR stop recording automatically after a specified duration.
While recording, press z REC (grabación).

Recording stereo programs
When you receive a program broadcast in stereo, press AUDIO MONITOR (monitor de audio) to display ESTÉREO on t he TV screen. You can also sele ct IZQUIERDA, DERECHA, or MONOFÓNICO. If there is noise in the stereo program, select MONOFÓNICO. The sound will be recorded in monau ral (on both hi-fi and normal audio tracks) but with less noise.
Recording bilingual programs
Press AUDIO MONITOR (monitor de audio) to display “SAP” on the TV screen. When a SAP (Second Audio Program) is received, “SAP” appears on the TV screen. When PRINCIPAL is selected, the VCR records only the main sound.
Selecting the sound during playback
During playback, press AUDIO MONITOR (monitor de audio) to select the sound you want.

How sound is recorded on a video tape
The VCR records sound onto two separate tracks. Hi-fi audio is recorded onto the main track along with the picture . Monaural sound is recorded onto the normal audio track along the edge of the tape.

The VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins. You can easily find a specific point using various search functions.

Insert an indexed tape into the VCR.
