Precautions
On safety
•Before operating the woofer, be sure that the operating voltage of your woofer is identical with that of your local power supply.
•Unplug the woofer from the wall outlet if it is not to be used for an extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull the cord by grasping the plug. Never pull the cord itself.
•Should any liquid or solid object fall into the woofer, unplug the woofer and have the woofer checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•AC power cord must be changed only at the qualified service shop.
To unplug the AC power cord
Before you unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet, turn the POWER switch to OFF.
When turning on or off an amplifier or other equipment
Lower the volume of the amplifier to minimum.
To avoid damaging the woofer
•Be careful in setting the volume control of the amplifier to avoid an excessive input power.
•Do not attempt to open the enclosure or remold speaker units and networks.
About magnetically shielded speakers
(To prevent color irregularity on nearby TV screens, etc.)
The system employs a magnetic shield.
Nevertheless, the magnet is strong, therefore there may be some magnetic leakage. If the unit is used with a CRT TV set or a projector, move the unit away 30 cm (13-16 in.) from the TV set, etc.
If the unit is placed too close to the TV set, etc., it may cause color irregularity on the screen.
If color irregularity is observed...
tTurn off the TV set once, then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes.
If color irregularity is observed again...
tPlace the speakers further apart from the TV set.
When howling occurs
Relocate the speaker or turn down the volume of the amplifier.
On installation
•Do not install the woofer near heat sources such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration or shock.
•Good ventilation is essential to prevent internal heat build-up in the woofer. Place the woofer in a location with adequate air circulation. Do not place the woofer on a soft surface.
•Use caution when placing the speaker on a specially treated (waxed, oiled, polished, etc.) floor, as staining or discoloration may result.
On cleaning the cabinet
Clean the cabinet with a soft cloth lightly moistened with water. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.
About sound interruptions
During a large-output operation or when using for an extended period, the sound may be interrupted by the circuit protector inside the unit. In this case, turn the unit OFF, then on again.
If you have any questions or problems concerning your woofer that is not covered in this manual, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Installation
Since the human ear cannot detect the direction and position where the bass sound being reproduced by a woofer (below 200 Hz) comes from, you can install the woofer wherever you like in your room. To obtain a better bass reproduction, we recommend you to install the woofer on a solid floor where the resonance is unlikely to occur.
Notes
•Install the woofer about 5 cm (2 in.) away from the wall.
•Do not place an object on the woofer or sit on it.
•If the woofer is installed in the center of a room, the bass could be extremely weakened. This is due to the influence of the standing wave of the room. If this happened, move the woofer away from the center of a room or eliminate the cause of the standing wave, by installing a bookshelf on the wall, etc.
Hooking Up the System (A)
Overview
You can connect this Sub woofer system to a Hi-Fi amplifier (for stereo systems) or an audio/video amplifier.
(Most Hi-Fi amplifiers do not provide LINE OUT* jacks for a subwoofer.)
*LINE OUT may be referred to as MONO OUT, MIX OUT, or SUBWOOFER OUT, depending on the maker.
Before you get started
•Turn off the power of the amplifier and the woofer before making any connection.
•Use the audio connecting cords that are supplied to the respective equipment. If there are not enough audio connecting cords to make the necessary connections, you need to purchase some optional audio connecting cords.
•Be sure to make connections firmly to avoid noise.
•Connect the AC power cord from the woofer to a wall outlet.
•You cannot connect the CENTER output jack for use with Dolby Pro Logic function to the woofer. Bass sound is not output with some Dolby Pro Logic modes.
When using the subwoofer output terminals or the superwoofer output terminals
Output level of some amplifiers may not be large enough.
If the sound level of the woofer is low, connections between the speaker terminals of the amplifier and the SPEAKER IN terminals of the woofer are recommended.
What cords will I need?

Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminal on the components: + to + and – to –. If the cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted and will lack bass.
It is useful to decide that the speaker cord marked with a line is always the negative (–) and should be connected to the negative (–) terminal to avoid any improper connections.
Should a speaker cord short, purchase the optional cord to connect.
A Hi-Fi Amplifier Connection (with stereo system)
For stereo connection, only the R and L channels are used. For the center channel cord, twist and wrap the plus and minus ends of the wires with electrical tape to avoid a short-circuit.
Connecting to the amplifier and speakers (D)
Connect the SPEAKER IN terminals of the unit to the amplifier’s speaker output terminals. Connect both L and R channels.
Connect the speakers to the SPEAKER IN terminals of the unit.
An Audio/Video Amplifier Connection
(with stereo system, 5.1ch)
There are two ways to connect the speakers: connect the R, C, and L channels, or connect to the LINE IN jacks.
Connecting to the amplifier and speakers (E)
Connect the SPEAKER IN terminals of the unit to the amplifier’s front speaker output terminals. Connect the front speakers to the SPEAKER OUT terminals of the unit.
Connect the rear speakers to the amplifier’s rear speaker output terminals.
*To use the center channel, disconnect the insulating tube.
Notes
•No matter which size satellite system you are using, large or small, the SPEAKER OUT terminals can be used.
The LINE IN jacks can be used for the bigger satellite systems.
•With smaller satellite systems, bass sounds may be diminished, depending on the settings of the audio/ video amplifier or a DVD player.

Sécurité
•Avant d’utiliser le caisson de grave, vérifiez que sa tension de fonctionnement est identique à celle du secteur local.
•Si vous prévoyez de ne pas utiliser le caisson pendant longtemps, débranchez-le de la prise murale. Pour débrancher le cordon d’alimentation secteur, tirez sur la fiche. Ne jamais tirer sur le cordon proprement dit.
•Si un liquide ou un solide tombait dans le coffret, débranchez le caisson et faites-le contrôler par un technicien qualifié avant de le remettre en service.
•Le cordon d’alimentation secteur doit être changé par un professionnel seulement.
Pour débrancher le cordon d’alimentation
Mettez le commutateur POWER sur OFF avant de débrancher le cordon d’alimentation de la prise murale.
Avant d’allumer ou d’éteindre l’amplificateur ou un autre appareil
N’oubliez pas de baisser complètement le volume.
Pour éviter d’endommager le caisson de grave
•Réglez avec soin le volume de l’amplificateur pour éviter toute entrée de son excessive.
•Ne pas essayer d’ouvrir le coffret ou de modifier les haut-parleurs et les circuits.
A propos des enceintes avec blindage magnétique
(Pour éviter les anomalies de couleurs sur les écrans de téléviseurs installés à proximité, etc.)
Le système utilise un blindage magnétique.
Toutefois, l’aimant est puissant, par conséquent il peut y avoir une dispersion magnétique. Si l’appareil est utilisé avec un téléviseur CRT ou un projecteur, éloignez-le de 30 cm (13-16 pouces) du téléviseur, etc.
Si l’appareil est installé trop prêt du téléviseur, etc., une anomalie de couleurs peut se produire à l’écran.
Si vous observez des anomalies de couleurs...
tEteignez le téléviseur, puis rallumez-le 15 à 30 minutes plus tard.
S’il n’y a aucun changement...
tEloignez les enceintes du téléviseur.
En cas de rétroaction acoustique
Changez l’emplacement des enceintes ou baissez le volume de l’amplificateur.
Installation
•Ne pas installer le caisson de grave près d’une source de chaleur, comme un radiateur ou une bouche d’air chaud, dans un endroit en plein soleil ou exposé à de la poussière, des vibrations ou des chocs mécaniques.
•Une bonne ventilation est essentielle pour éviter une surchauffe interne du caisson. Installez le caisson dans un endroit où la circulation d’air est suffisante. Ne pas l’installer sur une surface molle.
•Prenez les précautions nécessaires lors de l’installation du haut-parleur sur un plancher traité (ciré, huilé, verni, etc.) pour éviter l’apparition de taches ou la décoloration du sol.
Nettoyage du coffret
Nettoyez le coffret avec un chiffon doux légèrement imprégné d’eau. Ne pas utiliser de tampons abrasifs, poudre à récurer ou diluant, comme l’alcool ou la benzine.
A propos des interruptions du son
Lors d’une utilisation intensive ou prolongée dans le temps, il se peut que le son soit interrompu par le protège circuit placé à l’intérieur de l’appareil. Dans ce cas, mettez l’appareil hors tension, puis remettez-le sous tension.
Pour toute question ou problème au sujet du caisson de grave, veuillez contacter votre revendeur Sony le plus proche.
Installation
Comme l’oreille humaine ne peut pas détecter la direction ni la position des basses reproduites par un caisson de grave (en dessous de 200 Hz), vous pouvez installer le caisson où vous voulez dans la pièce. Pour obtenir une meilleure reproduction du grave, il est toutefois conseillé de l’installer sur un sol ferme, où la résonnance est peu probable.
Remarques
•Installez le caisson de grave à environ 5 cm (2 in.) du mur.
•Ne pas poser d’objet sur le caisson ni s’asseoir dessus.
•Si le caisson est installé au center d’une pièce, le son grave est extrêmement affaibli. Ce phénomème est dû aux ondes stationnaires de la pièce. Le cas échéant, éloignez le caisson du centre de la pièce, ou éliminez la cause des ondes stationnaires, en installant, par exemple, une étagère.
Raccordement du système (A)
Présentation
Vous pouvez raccorder ce caisson de grave à un amplificateur Hi-Fi (pour les systèmes stéréo) ou à un amplificateur audio/vidéo.
(La plupart des amplificateurs Hi-Fi ne comportent pas de prises LINE OUT* adaptées au caisson de grave.)
*LINE OUT peut être désigné sous le nom MONO OUT, MIX OUT ou SUBWOOFER OUT, selon la marque.
Préparation
•Mettez l’amplificateur et le caisson de grave hors tension avant d’effectuer tout branchement.
•Utilisez les câbles de raccordement audio fournis avec le matériel correspondant. S’il n’y a pas suffisamment de câbles audio pour effectuer les raccordements nécessaires, achetez des câbles supplémentaires.
•Veillez à bien effectuer les raccordements afin d’éviter les parasites.
•Raccordez le cordon d’alimentation du caisson de grave à une prise murale.
•Si vous utilisez la fonction Dolby Pro Logic, vous ne pouvez pas raccorder la prise de sortie CENTER au caisson de grave. Les basses ne sont pas diffusées sous certains modes Dolby Pro Logic.
Utilisation des bornes de sortie du caisson de grave ou du super caisson de grave
Le niveau de sortie de certains amplificateurs peut ne pas être suffisant.
Si le niveau sonore du caisson de grave est faible, il est conseillé de raccorder les bornes des enceintes de l’amplificateur aux bornes SPEAKER IN du caisson de grave.
Câbles nécessaires pour les raccordements

Veillez à raccorder le câble d’enceinte à la borne appropriée des éléments : + à + et – à –. Si les câbles sont inversés, le son sera déformé et ne comportera pas de basses.
Afin d’éviter tout raccordement incorrect, il est nécessaire de définir que le câble d’enceinte marqué par une ligne est toujours négatif (–) et doit être raccordé à la borne négative (–).
Si un câble d’enceinte est trop court, achetez le câble en option.
Raccordement d’un amplificateur HiFi (avec système stéréo)
Seuls les canaux R et L doivent être utilisés dans le cas d’un raccordement stéréo. Pour éviter un court-circuit avec le câble du canal central, torsadez et recouvrez les extrémités négative et positive des fils avec du ruban isolant.
Raccordement à l’amplificateur et aux enceintes (D)
Raccordez les bornes SPEAKER IN de l’appareil aux bornes de sortie des enceintes de l’amplificateur.
Raccordez les deux canaux L et R.
Raccordez les enceintes aux bornes SPEAKER IN de l’appareil.
Raccordement d’un amplificateur Audio/Vidéo
(avec système stéréo, 5,1 canaux)
Il existe deux manières de raccorder les enceintes : raccordez les enceintes aux canaux R, C et L ou aux prises LINE IN.
Raccordement à l’amplificateur et aux enceintes (E)
Raccordez les bornes SPEAKER IN de l’appareil aux bornes de sortie des enceintes avant de l’amplificateur.
Raccordez les enceintes avant aux bornes SPEAKER OUT de l’appareil.
Raccordez les enceintes arrière aux bornes de sortie des enceintes arrière de l’amplificateur.
*Pour utiliser le canal central, débranchez le tube isolant.
Remarques
•Quelle que soit la taille du système satellite que vous utilisez, petit ou grand, les bornes SPEAKER OUT peuvent être utilisées.
Les prises LINE IN peuvent être utilisées pour les systèmes satellites plus grands.
•Avec des systèmes satellites plus petits, les basses peuvent être diminuées, selon les réglages de l’amplificateur audio/vidéo ou du lecteur DVD.
