SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following
safety checks before releasing the set to the customer.
1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are "pinched" or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for parts which, though functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
5. Check the line cord for cracks and abrasion. Recommend the replacement of any such line cord to the customer.
6. Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
7. Check the antenna terminals, metal trim, "metallized" knobs, screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC leakage. Check leakage as described below.

WHEN SERVICING, DO NOT APPROACH THE LASER EXIT WITH THE EYE TOO CLOSELY. IN CASE IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM LASER BEAM EMISSION, BE SURE TO OBSERVE FROM A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 25 cm FROM THE SURFACE OF THE OBJECTIVE LENS ON THE OPTICAL PICK-UP BLOCK.

WARNING!!

CAUTION:
The use of optical instrument with this product will increase eye hazard.
LEAKAGE TEST
The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to any exposed metal part having a return to chassis, must not exceed 0.5mA (500 microampers). Leakage current can be measured by any one of three methods.
1. A commercial leakage tester, such as the Simpson 229 or RCA TW-540A. Follow the manufacturers' instructions to use these instruments.
2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The Data Precision 245 digital multimeter is suitable for this job.
3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by means of a VOM or battery-operated AC voltmeter. The "limit" indication is 0.75V, so analog meters must have an accurate low voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa SH-63Trd are examples of a passive VOM that is suitable. Nearly all battery operated digital multimeters that have a 2V AC range are suitable. (See Fig. A)
Unleaded solder
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the leadfree mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead. (Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)
: LEAD FREE MARK
Unleaded solder has the following characteristics.
Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40°C higher than
ordinary solder. Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time. Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to about 350°C. Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
Strong viscosity
Unleaded solder is more viscous (sticky, less prone to flow) than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges occur such as on IC pins, etc.
Usable with ordinary solder
It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may also be added to ordinary solder.
CAUTION
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
SAFETY-RELATED COMPONENT WARNING!!
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK 0 OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK 0 ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.

About MP3 audio tracks
You can play MP3 audio tracks on CD ROMs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs. However, the discs must be recorded according to ISO9660 level 1, level 2, or Joliet format for the player to recognize the tracks. Glossary
Chapter (page 10)
Sections of a picture or a music fe ature that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Depend ing on the disc, no chapters may be recorded.
Dolby Digital (page 24, 66)
Digital audio compression t echnology developed by Dolby Laboratories . This technology conforms to 5.1-c hannel surround sound. The rear channel i s stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. Dolby Digital provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital aud io found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Good channel separation is realized because all of the channel data are record ed discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital.
Dolby Surround (Pro Logi c) (page 23)
Audio signal processing techno logy that Dolby Laboratories developed for surround sound. When the input signal co ntains a surround component, the Pro Log ic process outputs the front, center an d rear signals. The rear channel is mona ural.
DTS (page 24, 67)
Digital audio compression t echnology that Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed. This technology conforms to 5.1-c hannel surround sound. The rear channel i s stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5 .1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio. Good channel separati on is realized because all of the channel data is recorded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital.
DVD (page 7)
A disc that contains up to 8 hours o f moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single -layer and singlesided DVD is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD is
9.4 GB, and double- layer and double-sided DVD is 17GB. The picture data uses the MPE G 2 format, one of the worldwide standa rds of digital compression technology. Th e picture data is compressed to about 1 /40 (average) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that ch anges the data to be allocated according to th e status of the picture. Audio information is recorded in a multi-channel format, such as Dolby Digital, allowing you to enjoy a more real au dio presence. Furthermore, various adva nced functions such as the multi-angle, mult ilingual, and Parental Control functions ar e provided with the DVD.
Index (CD)/Video Index (VIDEO CD) (page
10)
A number that divides a t rack into sections to easily locate the point you want on a CD or VIDEO CD. Depending on the disc, no index may be recorded.
MPEG audio (page 24, 67)
International standard coding system used to compress audio digi tal signals authorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1 conforms to up to 2channel stereo. MPEG 2, used on DV Ds, conforms to up to 7.1-channel surround.
Scene (page 10)
On a VIDEO CD with PBC (playback control) functions, the menu scr eens, moving pictures and still pictures are divided into sections called “scenes.
Title (page 10)
The longest section of a picture or music feature on a DVD, movie, etc., in video software, or the entire album in audio software.
Track (page 10)
Sections of a picture or a music fe ature on a CD or VIDEO CD (the length of a song).
