Insert two AA batteries (supplied) into the remote control using the following illustration as a guide.
0ta
Under normal conditions, batteries wili last up to six months, if the remote control does not operate properly, the batteries might be worn out. See “Programming the Remote Control“ on page 41 for details.

About this Manual

This manual describes everything you need to know to set up your Sony Internet Terminal and to get connected to the Internet via the WebTV Plus Network on-line service. Instructions are included for connecting the Internet Terminal to your TV, VCR, cable, and a telephone line (required for dialing into the WebTV Plus Network). Overview

Before you can connect to the WebTV Plus Network, you must connect your Internet Terminal to each of the following:
Your TV □ An analog telephone line □ An AC power outlet □ An antenna or cable (either directly or through your VCR or cable
box)
^ If you use an answering sen/ice or voice message service, you must listen to all your
messages before you can connect to the WebTV Plus Network.

Connecting Your TV

In order to connect your TV to the Internet Terminal, first determine what type of jacks your TV is equipped with. Then choose the appropriate connection from the following list.
If your TV is equipped with
S-Video jack 8, A/V jacks 10 Monaural TV jack 12 VHF/UHF jack only 14
^ An S-VIDEO connection provides the best picture quality of all the connection options.
For optimum audio performance, consider integrating the Internet Terminal into your home entertainment system.
Use the connection described on page

Connecting Additional Equipment

If you choose to connect additional equipment to your Internet Terminal, you must first complete the TV connection (listed above). Then choose the appropriate additional connections from the following list.

Telephone Line Connection Options

If possible, connect your Internet Terminal to a telephone jack that isn't connected to a telephone. If you have only one convenient telephone jack, use the T Splitter to share the line. This will enable you to keep both the Internet Terminal and your telephone plugged in at the same time. The T Splitter must be plugged into the wall jack to operate properly.
If you don't have Call Waiting, a person trying to call you while you're cormected to WebTV Plus Network receives a busy signal.
If you have Call Waiting, you can use the Line Share™ feature to temporarily disconnect from the WebTV Plus Network when you receive a call. For instructions on setting up Line Share, go to "Using WebTV" on the Web Home page. The Line Share setting will allow your telephone to ring so you can take the call the way you normally do. When you're finished with the call, push the button on the remote control to reconnect to the WebTV Plus Network. You will be reconnected to the page you were visiting when the call came in.
You may find you don't want to be interrupted when you are on the Internet. WebTV makes it easy for you to temporarily turn off Call Waiting while you're connected. For information on disabling Call Waiting, or on disconnecting from the WebTV Plus Network to make a telephone call, see the on-screen help. If the telephones in your house are generally busy, you might consider using a separate, or dedicated, telephone line to access the WebTV Plus Network. Contact your local telephone company to order a separate telephone line.
Do not connect to a "wireless" telephone extension. Since these devices typically do not support high data rates, it may result in very slow operation, or may even prevent connection with the WebTV pius Network.
The WebTV Plus Network has more than 1,000 local access points across the country. However, due to distance, some access points may result in long-distance charges. WebTV Networks, Inc. is continually adding local access pciints. For more information about the one nearest to you, please call 1-800-GO-WEBTV.
The WebTV Plus Network also has a program called OpenISP™ for users who would like to use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) not affiliated with the WebTV Plus Network, or to reduce on-line fees if you already have an ISP account. For more information, select "Using WebTV" from the Web Home page, then choose dialing options.

Using Links

Areas on a page that can be highlighted are called links, because they link you to another page. Links can be words, pictures, icons, or boxes of any shape or color. The WebTV Plus Network finds each link on a page for you when you press the arrow buttons on the remote control.

To activate a link:

1 Use the arrow buttons on the remote control to highlight the link you
want to activate.
2 Press on the remote control.

Finding Links on an Image Map

In some cases when you go to a page, the highlight surrounds more than a single link. Several links or possibly the entire page may be highlighted. This indicates the presence of several links in a single highlighted area. This is called an image map. An arrow will appear in the lower right comer of the highlight when an image map is displayed.
To find links on an image map:
1 Press to activate the arrow.
2 Use the remote control arrow buttons to move the arrow until its
point "touches" the link you want to highlight.

FCC Regulations and Information

FCC Registration Information
Your Internet Terminal has been registered by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) as not being harmful to the telephone network when connected directly to the telephone lines. In order to fully comply with the Rules of the FCC, the following instructions should be read carefully and followed completely where applicable:
FCC has established Rules which permit this device to be directly connected to the telephone network. Standardized jacks are used for these connections. This equipment should not be used on party lines or coin phones.
If this device is malfunctioning, it may also be causing harm to the telephone network; this device should be disconnected UAtil the source of the problem can be determined and until the repair has been made. If this is not done, the telephone company may temporarily disconnect service.
The telephone company may make changes in its technical operations and procedures; if such changes affect the compatibility or use of this device, the telephone company is required to give adequate notice of the changes. You will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.
If the telephone company requests information on what equipment is connected to their lines, inform them of:
a. The telephone number to which this unit is connected.
b. The ringer equivalence number. c. The USOC jack required. d. The FCC Registration Number. Items (b) and (d) are indicated on the label. The
