When to replace the batteries C

Replace the batteries with the new ones when “ ” flashes in the display.

To replace the batteries

1 Release the catch to open the battery

compartment lid.

2 Push the # side of the battery to remove the

batteries and replace them with new ones.

Playing a Tape

1 Open the cassette holder and insert a

cassette.

2 Press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor to

TAPE in the display. Then press SET to select the tape type. No message: normal (TYPE I) METAL: High-position (TYPE II) or metal (TYPE IV).

3 Press N.

Adjust the volume with VOLUME.

To Press

* Playback will switch automatically to the opposite side

when the tape reaches the end of the side (FS422ST/ FS421 only).

**If you leave the Walkman after the tape has been

wound or rewound, the batteries will be consumed rapidly. Be sure to press x.

Note

•Do not open the cassette holder while the tape is running.

To select the tape direction

Switch Y to select the desired direction.

Listening to the Radio

1 If the HOLD function is on, turn the HOLD

switch in the opposite direction of the arrow to unlock the controls. Make sure that the tape has stopped completely.

2 Press TV, WB (Weather), FM or AM to select

the desired band and to turn on the radio.

3 Press TUNING +/– to tune in to the desired

station. Hold down TUNING +/– for a few seconds to scan for stations.

To turn off the radio

Press OFF.

To improve the broadcast reception

•For TV/WB/FM: Extend the headphones/ earphones cord (antenna). If the reception is still not good, press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor in the display to FM MODE. Then press SET to switch between “LOCAL” and none (DX) for best reception. D

•For AM: Reorient the unit itself.

Presetting Radio Stations

You can preset up to 40 radio stations, 7 for TV, 4 for WB, 24 for FM and 5 for AM, .

Presetting Automatically Scanned Stations

1 Press TV, WB (Weather), FM or AM. 2 Press ENTER for more than 3 seconds.

Preset number 1 will flash in the display and the Walkman starts scanning the stations from the lower frequencies and stops for about 3 seconds when a station is received.

3 If you wish to preset the received station,

press ENTER while the preset number is flashing. The received station is preset on preset number 1 and the unit starts scanning for the next receivable station.

4 Repeat Step 3 until all receivable stations are

preset.

To stop scanning

Press OFF. The radio is turned off at the same time.

Notes

•If stations are already stored, the newly preset stations replace the old ones when the above procedure is completed.

•If stations cannot be preset automatically, preset stations manually.

Presetting Stations Manually

1 Press TV, WB (Weather), FM or AM. 2 Press ENTER.

The frequency digits and a preset number flash in the display.

3 While the frequency digits and the preset

number are flashing, tune in to a station you wish to store using TUNING +/–, and select a preset number using PRESET +/–.

4 While the frequency digits and the preset

number are flashing, press ENTER.

Notes

•If you cannot complete step 3 or 4 while the indications are flashing, repeat from step 2.

•If a station is already stored, the new station replaces the old one.

To cancel the stored station

Follow the procedure above and in step 3, press and hold TUNING +/– until “- - - -” is displayed and select the preset number you want to cancel using PRESET +/–. Press ENTER while “- - - -” is flashing.

Playing the preset radio stations

1 Press TV, WB (Weather), FM or AM. 2 Press PRESET +/–.

Using Other Functions

Locking the controls

Turn the HOLD switch to the direction of the arrow to lock the controls. The hold function only locks the radio operation buttons, MENU button and SET button.

Emphasizing bass sound D

Press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor to MB in the display. Then, press SET to turn MB (mega bass) on. With each press, the indications change as follows. MB (mega bass) : emphasizes bass sound No message: off (normal)

Notes

•If the sound is distorted with the mode “MB”, turn down the volume or select normal mode.

•Bass emphasis may not show great effect if the volume is turned up too high.

Protecting Your Hearing — AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System)

Press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor to AVLS in the display. Then press SET to show “AVLS”. The maximum volume is kept down to protect your ears.

Precautions

On batteries

• Do not carry dry batteries with coins or other metallic objects. It can generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the batteries are accidentally contacted by a metallic object.

• When you are not going to use the Walkman for a long time, remove the battery to avoid any damage caused by battery leakage and subsequent corrosion.

On handling

• Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture, rain, mechanical shock, or in a car with its windows closed.

• Do not use cassettes longer than 90 minutes except for long continuous playback.

• The LCD display may become hard to see or slow down when using the unit at high temperatures (above 40°C/104°F) or at low temperatures (below 0°C/32°F). At room temperature, the display will return to its normal operating condition.

• If the unit has not been used for a long time, set it in the playback mode to warm it up for a few minutes before you start using again.

On water resistance

• Before opening or closing the cassette holder, be sure to wipe off water, dust or sand on the exterior of the Walkman. (The Walkman is not water-resistant with the cassette holder open.)

• Since water in the headphones/earphones jack may cause rust, cover it with the attached rubber cap when the headphones/ earphones are not in use.

• Since the Walkman is airtight, you may not be able to open the cassette holder because of sudden change in air pressure inside the Walkman, which happens after being transported on a plane or moving from a warm place to a cold place. To open the cassette holder see “Troubleshooting”.

• The supplied headphones/earphones are not meant to be immersed in water or come in continuous contact with water. If they are accidentally dropped into water or get wet, dry them with a soft cloth. Never use an electric hair dryer.

• If the Walkman or the headphones/earphones are immersed in salt water, be sure to wash them in non-running fresh water. Never wash them under running water, and never use soap or detergent.

• Any sand or dust on the rubber packing will prevent the cassette holder from closing tightly, and water may leak in. Brush off the dust once in a while.

• We recommend the packing to be changed every year. Replacement packing is available at an authorized Sony Service Facility.

On headphones/earphones

Road safety

Do not use headphones/earphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headphones/earphones at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.

Preventing hearing damage

Do not use headphones/earphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.

Caring for others

Keep the volume to a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.

On maintenance

• To clean the tape head and path, Use the cleaning cassette CHK-1W/C-1KW (not supplied) every 10 hours of use. Use only the recommended cleaning cassette.

• To clean the exterior, use a soft cloth slightly moistened in water. Do not use alcohol, benzine or thinner.

• Clean the headphones/earphones plugs periodically.

Troubleshooting

The display shows incorrect information.

• The batteries are weak. Replace the batteries with new ones.

The display and the operation are not normal.

• Remove the batteries for 30 seconds or more, and then insert them again. If this does not solve the problem, remove the batteries and leave the unit without batteries for 30 minutes or more, and then insert them again. In this case, preset the stations again, since the preset stations are erased from the memory.

The cassette holder cannot be opened.

• Open the rubber cap, then open the cassette holder. When the cassette holder opens, remember to close the rubber cap to prevent intrusion of water.

The sound is distorted.

• Set the Y switch firmly to the correct position (FS422ST/ FS421 only).

extraerlas y sustitúyalas por unas nuevas.

Reproducción de la cintas

1 Abra el portacasetes y inserte un casete. 2 Pulse MENU varias veces para ajustar el

cursor en TAPE en el visor. A continuación, pulse SET para seleccionar el tipo de cinta. Ningún mensaje: normal (TYPE I) METAL: Posición alta (TYPE II) o de metal (TYPE IV). D

Nota

•No abra el portacasetes mientras la cinta se encuentra en funcionamiento.

Para seleccionar la dirección de la cinta

Ajuste Y para seleccionar la dirección que desee.

Recepción de la radio

1 Si la función HOLD está activada, gire el

interruptor HOLD en la dirección contraria a la flecha para desbloquear los controles. Asegúrese de que la cinta se ha detenido completamente.

2 Pulse TV, WB (Meteorología), FM o AM

para seleccionar la banda que desee y para activar la radio.

3 Pulse TUNING +/– para sintonizar la

emisora deseada. Mantenga pulsado TUNING +/– durante unos segundos para explorar emisoras.

Para apagar la radio

Pulse OFF.

Para mejorar la recepción de la emisión

•Para TV/WB/FM: Extienda el cable (antena) de los

auriculares. Si la recepción aún no es buena, pulse MENU varias veces para ajustar el cursor del visor en FM MODE. A continuación, pulse SET para cambiar entre “LOCAL” y ninguno (DX) con el fin de mejorar la recepción. D

Memorización de emisoras de radio

Puede memorizar hasta 40 emisoras, 7 para TV, 4 para WB, 24 para FM y 5 para AM.

Memorización de las emisoras exploradas automáticamente

1 Pulse TV, WB (Meteorología), FM o AM. 2 Pulse ENTER durante más de 3 segundos.

El número de memorización 1 parpadeará en el visor y el Walkman comenzará a explorar las emisoras desde las frecuencias más bajas, parando unos 3 segundos al recibir una emisora.

3 Si desea memorizar la emisora recibida,

pulse ENTER mientras parpadea el número de memorización. La emisora recibida se memorizará con el número de memorización 1 y la unidad comenzará a buscar la siguiente emisora.

4 Repita el paso 3 hasta que se memoricen

todas las emisoras que puedan recibirse.

Para detener la exploración

Pulse OFF. La radio se desactivará al mismo tiempo.

Notas

•Si ya hay emisoras almacenadas, las emisoras recién memorizadas sustituirán a las anteriores al realizar el procedimiento anterior.

•Si no es posible memorizar las emisoras automáticamente, memorícelas manualmente.

Memorización manual de emisoras

1 Pulse TV, WB (Meteorología), FM o AM. 2 Pulse ENTER.

Parpadearán en el visor los dígitos de frecuencia y un número de memorización.

3 Mientras parpadean los dígitos de

frecuencia y el número de memorización, sintonice una emisora que desee almacenar con TUNING +/– y seleccione un número de memorización con PRESET +/–.

4 Mientras parpadean los dígitos de

frecuencia y el número de memorización, pulse ENTER.

Notas

•Si no puede terminar el paso 3 o 4 mientras parpadean los indicadores, repita el procedimiento desde el paso

•Si ya hay una emisora almacenada, la emisora nueva la sustituirá.

Para cancelar la emisora almacenada

Siga el anterior procedimiento y en el paso 3, pulse y mantenga pulsado TUNING +/– hasta que aparezca “- - - -” y seleccione el número de memorización que desee cancelar mediante PRESET +/–. Pulse ENTER mientras parpadea “- - - -”.

Para recibir las emisoras memorizadas

1 Pulse TV, WB (Meteorología), FM o AM. 2 Pulse PRESET +/–.

Uso de otras funciones

Bloqueo de los controles

Para bloquear los controles, ajuste el interruptor HOLD en la dirección de la flecha. La función HOLD sólo bloquea los botones de empleo de la radio, MENU y SET.

Potenciación de los graves D

Pulse MENU varias veces para ajustar el cursor en MB en el visor. A continuación, pulse SET para activar MB (mega graves). Cada vez que lo pulse, las indicaciones cambiarán de la siguiente forma: MB (mega graves): potencia los graves Ningún mensaje: desactivado (normal)

Notas

•Si el sonido se distorsiona con el modo “MB”, disminuya el volumen o seleccione el modo normal.

•La potenciación de los graves puede no percibirse si el volumen está demasiado alto.

Protección de sus oídos — AVLS (Sistema de limitación automática del volumen) D

Pulse MENU varias veces para ajustar el cursor en AVLS en el visor. A continuación, pulse SET para que aparezca “AVLS”. El volumen máximo disminuye para proteger sus oídos.

Precauciones

Pilas

• No transporte pilas secas junto con monedas u otros objetos metálicos. Puede generarse calentamiento si los terminales positivo y negativo de las pilas entran accidentalmente en contacto con un objeto metálico.

• Cuando no vaya a emplear el Walkman durante mucho tiempo, extraiga las pilas para evitar daños por fugas y corrosión de las mismas.

Manejo

• No deje la unidad en lugares próximos a fuentes de calor, ni sujetos a la luz solar directa, polvo excesivo o arena, humedad, lluvia, golpes mecánicos ni en un automóvil con las ventanillas cerradas.

• No utilice casetes de duración superior a 90 minutos, excepto para reproducciones largas y continuas.

• Es posible que resulte difícil ver el visor LCD o que su rendimiento se reduzca al utilizar la unidad con temperaturas altas (superiores a 40°C/104°F) o bajas (inferiores a 0°C/32°F). Con temperaturas normales, el visor recuperará su condición de funcionamiento normal.

• Si no ha utilizado la unidad durante mucho tiempo, póngala en el modo de reproducción para que se caliente durante algunos minutos antes de empezar a usarla de nuevo.

Resistencia al agua

• Antes de abrir o cerrar el portacasetes, asegúrese de eliminar el agua, el polvo o la arena del exterior del Walkman. (Éste no es resistente al agua con el portacasetes abierto.)

• Puesto que la existencia de agua en la toma de auriculares puede producir óxido, cúbrala con la tapa de goma suministrada cuando no utilice auriculares.

• Puesto que el Walkman se cierra al vacío, es posible que no pueda abrir el portacasetes cuando se produzcan cambios bruscos en la presión del aire del interior del Walkman, lo cual ocurre tras su transporte en avión o al desplazarlo de un lugar cálido a uno frío. Para abrir el portacasetes, consulte “Solución de problemas”.

• Los auriculares suministrados no están diseñados para sumergirse en agua ni para estar en contacto continuo con agua. Si se caen al agua accidentalmente o si se mojan, séquelos con un paño suave. No utilice nunca un secador eléctrico de pelo.

• Si el Walkman o los auriculares se sumergen en agua salada, asegúrese de lavarlos en agua fresca que no sea corriente. No los lave nunca en agua corriente y nunca utilice jabón ni detergente.

• La existencia de arena o polvo en el componente de cierre de goma impedirá que el portacasetes se cierre al vacío, por lo que podrían producirse entradas de agua. Elimine el polvo periódicamente.

• Se recomienda cambiar el componente de cierre cada año. Podrá encontrar componentes de cierre en centros autorizados de servicio técnico Sony.

Auriculares

Seguridad en carretera

No utilice auriculares mientras conduce, monta en moto o bicicleta o maneja cualquier vehículo motorizado. Puede suponer un peligro para el tráfico y es ilegal en determinadas zonas. Igualmente, puede ser potencialmente peligroso escuchar el sonido por los auriculares a gran volumen mientras camina, especialmente en los pasos de peatones. Preste especial atención o deje de utilizarlos en situaciones potencialmente peligrosas.

Prevención de daños a los oídos

No utilice auriculares con el volumen alto. Los expertos en audición desaconsejan el uso continuo a gran volumen. Si experimenta pitidos en los oídos, reduzca el volumen o deje de utilizarlos.

Respeto por los demás

Mantenga el volumen a un nivel moderado. De esta forma, podrá escuchar los sonidos del exterior y será considerado con la gente que le rodea.

Mantenimiento

• Para limpiar el cabezal y recorrida de cinta, utilice el casete de limpieza CHK-1W/C-1KW (no suministrado) cada 10 horas de uso. Utilice únicamente el casete de limpieza recomendado.

• Para limpiar el exterior, utilice un paño suave ligeramente humedecido con agua. No utilice alcohol, bencina ni diluyente.

• Limpie periódicamente los enchufes de los auriculares.

Solución de problemas

El visor muestra información incorrecta.

• Las pilas disponen de poca energía. Sustitúyalas por unas nuevas.

La indicación y el funcionamiento no son normales.

• Extraiga las pilas durante 30 segundos o más y, a continuación, vuelva a insertarlas. Si el problema no se soluciona mediante esta operación, extraiga las pilas y deje la unidad sin éstas durante 30 minutos o más y, a continuación, insértelas de nuevo. En este caso, memorice las emisoras de nuevo, ya que las emisoras almacenadas se borran de la memoria.

No es posible abrir el portacasetes.

• Abra la tapa de goma y después abra el portacasetes. Al abrir el portacasetes, no olvide cerrar la tapa de goma para evitar entradas de agua.

El sonido se distorsiona.

• Ajuste el interruptor Y firmemente en la posición correcta (sólo FS422ST/FS421).
