unit is equipped with 5 disc trays which allow you to choose from a large number and wide variety of selections. Any disc at any time can be played using the DISC 1 to 5 buttons (CDP-C305 only).
• Shuffle play (page 10) Once a selection is played, it will not be played once more until the random order is completed.
• Music scan (page 11) You can check the selections by scanning the beginning of each selection. (CDP-C305 only)
• Program play (page 12) Up to 32 steps of program is possible from the 5 discs.

Differences by Model and Area

This instruction manual covers CDP-C305, CDP-C205, CDP-C201, and CDP-C301M. Their performance and operation are identical except for the following:
• The CDP-C205, C201 and CDP-C301M are not supplied with a remote commander. They do not have those functions activated only by remote commander, which

Note on the Transit Key

The white transit key on the bottom exterior of the unit protects the optical system against shock during transportation.
Before operating the CD player, be sure to remove the key by following the instructions on the label, and store it in a safe, place. When transporting the unit, replace the key in its original hole and lock it in place.

Precautions Installation

On safety

• Check the unit’s operating voltage before operation. It must be identical with that of your local power supply.
• Should any liquid or solid object fall into the cabinet. Unplug the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
• Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it will not be used for a long time. To disconnect the cord, pull it out by grasping the plug. Never pull the cord itself.
• As the laser beam used in this compact disc player is harmful to the eyes, do not attempt to disassemble the cabinet. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

On operation

When the unit is not used, turn the power off, to conserve energy and to extend the useful life of your unit.
For detailed safety precautions, see the leaflet “IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS”.
If you have any questions or problems concerning your unit, please contact you nearest Sony dealer.

Placing Your Unit

' Place the unit in a location with adequate air circulation
to prevent internal heat buildup in the unit.
' Do not place the unit on a soft surface, such as a rug
that would block the ventilation holes on the bottom. Do not install the unit.

On moisture condensation

If the player is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the unit. Should this occur, the player will not operate. In this case, remove the disc and leave the player turned on for about an hour until the moisture evaporates.

Connections

For Correct Connections

' Turn off the power of each unit before making
connections. ' Connect the AC power cord last. ' Be sure to insert the plugs firmly into the jacks.
Loose connection may cause hum and noise.

To Connect to an Amplifier

Installing Batteries in the Remote Commander

On battery life

• About half a year of normal operation can be expected when using the Sony SUM-3(NS) batteries.
• When the batteries are run down, the remote commander will not operate the unit. In this case, replace both batteries with new ones.
Notes on the remote commander and remote control operation
• Keep the commander away from extremely hot or humid places.
• Avoid dropping any foreign objects into the commander casing, particularly when replacing the batteries.
• Avoid exposing the remote sensor to direct sunlight or lighting apparatus. Such exposure can cause a malfunction.
• To avoid damage caused by battery leakage and corrosion, remove the batteries when the commander will not be used for a long time.

Playing a Disc

Before playing a disc, turn on the amplifier and set the input seiector to the CO player position.

To stop play

To stop for a moment during play, press ►!! (or remote commander). Press again to resume play. To stop play, press ■. To stop play and open the tray, press A.

Caution on adjusting volume

Do not turn up the volume while listening to a portion with very low level inputs or no audio signals. If you do the speakers may be damaged when a peak level portion is played.

To listen with the headphones

Connect the headphones and control the volume with the LEVEL control, (for CDP-C305/C205 only)

Note on the TIMER switch

Leave the TIMER switch off when not setting timer
activated play, (for CDP-C301M only)

Notes on handling discs

• To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its edge. Do not touch the surface.
• Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.

To play more than one disc, repeat step 3 to put additional discs in the desired order.
Choose whether to play “1 DISC" or “ALL DISCS”.

Elapsed playing time
• Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts, or leave it in a car parked in direct sunlight as temperature may rise considerably.
• After playing, store the disc in its case.

To play an 8 cm (3-inch) CO

Place it on the inner circle of the tray. If the disc is provided with an adaptor, first remove it. Do not put a normal CD (12 cm/5-inch) on top of an 8 cm CD.
Notes
• The tray number of an empty tray will be displayed until the empty tray number is set to play. Once it is recognized as empty, it will disappear.
• If there are no discs at all in the trays when played, “no disc” will be indicated.

Information Display

Selecting a Desired Disc

If you press press ^ or the compartment itself to close the compartment, the total number of selections and the total playing time of the disc to be played are displayed for a few seconds.
Each time you press TIME during play, the display
changes to give you the following information.
[a] Elapsed time in a selection (automatically displayed
when play begins)
[b1 Remaining time in a selection
“—indication will appear in the display window instead of the actual time if a selection numbered 21 or higher is selected.
[C] Remaining time of the disc
By using the DISC 1 to 5 buttons or the DISC SKIP button
during play, you can locate the beginning of any disc.
To select a particular disc (for CDP-C305 only) [II

Press the corresponding DISC 1 to 5 button.
Press DISC SKIP button.

Locating a Particular Seiection

Locating a selection in sequence (Automatic Music Sensor)

You can locate the beginning of a selection on the disc being played.
To locate the beginning of the selection being played
To locate the beginning of the next selection
Continue to press until the selection you want is located.
Note (for CDP-C30S only)
You can operate this function on the remote commander. Press

Notes
• Total remaining time is only available during continuous mode. If
will not be displayed by pressing the TIME button during program or shuffle mode.
• Total remaining time will be displayed, if time fade is set during
program or shuffle.
Locating a Particular Point in a
Selection

Locating a point in sequence (Manual Search)

You can locate a particular point in a selection during play by monitoring the high-speed sound.
To go back at high speed To go ahead at high speed
Release the button when you reach the point in the selection you want.
Note (for CDP-C305 only)
You can operate this function on the remote commander. Keep
pressed.

To locate at a higher speed

Press ◄◄ or ►► ►W in the pause mode. Search speed will increase three times, but there will be no sound. Find the desired point by watching the numbers in the display.
Keep ◄◄ pressed. Keep ►► pressed.

Playing in a Random Order
- Shuffle Play
You can have the selections (up to 99) played in a random order. The unit will play all the discs or just one disc you desire. Once a selection is played, it will not be played again until the random order is completed.

To stop playing

Press ■.

To cancel shuffle play

Press CONTINUE and return to the continuous playing mode.

Decide whether to shuffle between all discs or
one, depending on the number of discs inserted. To shuffle “ALL DISCS”, press once. To shuffle “1 DISC”, press twice.
SHUFFLE

To change from program or continuous play to shuffle play

Press SHUFFLE during program or continuous play. The program mode will be cleared and shuffle play will begin from the current selection being played.
What is this indication?

Playing Repeatedly
- Repeat Play
You can repeat a single disc or all the discs. The unit repeats the current playing mode.

To cancel repeat play

Press REPEAT again. “REPEAT” disappears.
Scanning Selections

You can check the selections by scanning the beginning of each selection on the disc. You can use this function in any play mode.

Press É.

Press ►ll (or ► on the remote commander).
Selecting the “ALL DISCS" or “1 DISC” In the continuous play
• To scan the first selection of each disc, select “ALL DISCS”.
• To scan the entire selections of a single disc, select “1 DISC”

Playing in a Desired Order
- Program Play
You can make a program by designating up to 32 steps in the order you want them to be played. The unit will play the disc according to your program.
You can play up to 32 steps in the desired order. You can program one selection or one disc in a step.

To program a whole disc

• Using the DISC SKIP button After step 1 and 2: 1 Press DISC SKIP button “AL” is
displayed in the window. 2 Press PROGRAM. 3 Go on to step 6.
• Using the DISC 1 to 5 buttons (CDP-C305 only) After step 1 and 2: 1 Press the DISC 1 to 5 button to select the disc. 2 Go on to step 6.
The whole disc is programmed as one step.

To program while observing the disc labels

You can program the selections with the disc compartment open.
To check the programmed selections_______________
Press ►► ►W in the pause mode. Each time you press ►► the selections are displayed in the order they have been programmed.

To erase the last selection programmed

Press ■ once to erase or correct the program.

To erase all the selections programmed

Keep ■ pressed to erase or correct the program.
The program will be erased in the following situations
• ™ is pressed during program play.
• Power is turned off.

To display the total playing time of the program

Press the TIME button after programming and before
playing. The time display will blink and each disc will be computed for the total programmed time. After the addition has been completed, the program time will be displayed for 3 seconds. When other programs are added, and the TIME button is pressed, the program time of the added program only will be computed. On the other hand, if even one step is cleared, it will compute from the beginning.
If selections numbered 21 or higher is programmed, the
“—indication will appear instead of numbers.

To stop program play

Press ■. The last selection number programmed is
displayed. To resume play, press ►ll (or ► on the remote commander). Play begins from the beginning of the
program.
You can play the same program repeatedly as long as you do not cancel program .play or erase the program.

To cancel program play

Press CONTINUE and return to the continuous playing
mode. The program will be erased.

Tips on Editing Tapes

The following functions are convenient for editing your own tapes.

Fading out after a desired duration - Time Fade

You can have the play fade out at the end by designating the play duration.
To set time fade
1 Press TIME FADE during stop and pause..
“FADE” is displayed and blinks in the window.
2 Set the desired play duration using the ◄◄/
►► buttons.
Each time you press 1« ◄◄/►>■ ►W, the display
changes to give you the following duration.

You can have the play fade in and fade out for 5 seconds, (for CDP-C305 only)
To end the play fading out
Press FADER when you want to start fading out.

To restart the play fading in
Press FADER in the pause mode.

Timer Activated Playing

(for CDP-C301M only)
This function can be operated in the continuous play
mode.
1 Insert a disc in the compartment. 2 Set the timer. 3 Set TIMER to PLAY.

Keep the POWER switch depressed on the CD player

When the timer is set, the power of the player will be cut
off. At the time set, the CD player will be switched on and play will start.

When the timer-activated play ends

Be sure to set TIMER to OFF. If the TIMER switch is left at PLAY, the unit will automatically start playing the next time the power is turned on.

Maintenance Specifications

Cleaning the cabinet

Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad. scouring powder or solvent such
as alcohol or benzine.

Cleaning discs

Before playing, clean the disc with the cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the center out.
Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray intended for analog discs.
After playing, store the disc in its case.

Troubleshooting Guide

The following checks will assist in the correction of most problems which you may encounter with your unit. Should any problem persist after you have made these checks, consult your nearest Sony service facility.
Before going through the check tist below, first refer back to the connection an operating procedures.
Trouble
No audio from one or both channels
Play does not begin.
Discs cannot be played continuously.
Remote commander does not operate the unit. (For CDP-C305 only)
