  • DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
  • CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced. Have defective switches replaced. Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off.
  • AWARNING All repairs, electrical or mechanical, should be attempted only by trained repairmen. Contact the nearest Skil Factory Service Center, or Authorized Skil Service Station or other competent repair service. Use only Skil replacement parts, any other may create a hazard.

AWARNING The use of any other accessories not specified in this manual may create a hazard.

Tool Use

  • DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • USE THE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or attachment to do the job of a heavy-duty tool. Don't use tool for purpose not intended—for example; don't use circular saw for cutting tree limbs or logs.
  • SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using your hand and it frees both hands to operate tool.
  • OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable for use outdoors and marked with suffix W-A (for UL), or W (for CSA).

Tool Care

  • STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not in use, tools should be stored in dry, high or locked up place—out of the reach of children.
  • DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
  • DO NOT ALTER OR MISUSE TOOL. These tools are precision built. Any alteration or modification not specified is misuse and may result in a dangerous condition.
  • AVOID GASEOUS AREAS. Do not operate portable electric tools in gaseous or explosive atmospheres. Motors in these tools normally spark, and the sparks might ignite fumes.
  • MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and safer performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. Inspect tool cords periodically and if damaged, have repaired by authorized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if damaged. Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease.
  • AWARNING Before connecting the tool to a power source (receptacle, outlet, etc.) be sure the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the nameplate of the tool. A power source with voltage greater than that specified for the tool can result in SERIOUS INJURY to the user—as well as damage to the tool. If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE TOOL. Using a power source with voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.

The Skil Cordless Drill and Screwdriver comes in two models, the 2003 and 2007. Both models have a 3/8" chuck, and two speeds (100 and 300 RPM). The 2003 has a 3-hour charge cycle and the 2007 has a fast 1-hour charge cycle. The low RPM capability of these models is not a deficiency. On the contrary, low speed means high torque and high torque is a definite plus for efficient drilling and driving. Your cordless is not recommended for such high speed operations as sanding, buffing, or polishing.

BATTERIES

Your Skil Cordless Drill and Screwdriver is equipped with 5 nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries. Length of service from one charging will depend on the type of work you are doing, but the batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times. Should it ever be necessary to replace the batteries, your nearest Skil Service Center or Authorized Service Station will be able to assist you. Check your Yellow Pages under "Tools-Electric" for the address. NOTE: Do not worry about overcharging. Your charger is designed to prevent overcharging.

TRIGGER LOCK

Battery operated tools are always in operating condition when charged. The trigger lock is your protection against inadvertent use. Always keep the lock button in the off position when the tool is not in use or when changing accessories.

REVERSE

The reverse switch allows you to change the rotation of the tool. For clockwise or normal rotation, push the switch to the forward position. The reverse position will provide the counterclockwise rotation needed to remove screws.

Do not change the direction of A CAUTION rotation until the chuck comes to a complete stop to prevent damage to tool.

2 SPEED CONTROL

This exclusive Skil feature allows operation at either 100 or 300 RPM. Pull the trigger half way for low speed and all the way for full speed. NOTE: The drill should be recharged if it loses power in either low or high speed. The tool should not be operated at high speed when low speed no longer functions.

CHUCK KEY

When not in use, the chuck key stores easily and securely in the base of the handle.

CHARGING THE DRILL

Your new cordless drill is not fully charged. Be sure to charge it prior to initial use. To charge the drill first put the trigger lock in the OFF position. Then pull the chuck key out far enough so you can twist it out of the way to insert the recharger plug. You do not have to remove the key completely. Plug the charger into the drill (match the large pin to the large hole and plug the charger into the power source.)

A CAUTION These chargers can be used only with 60 cycle, 120 AC voltage (normal house voltage).

3 HOUR CHARGE

After usage, the 2003 normally requires 3 hours charging time to reach full capacity.

NOTE: Your tool has a built-in thermostat to protect the batteries. This may increase the recharge cycle to 14-16 hours when the tool becomes warm from heavy use or high temperatures. For the 3 hour charge, place the tool in a cool environment for 30 minutes before recharging.

1 HOUR QUICK CHARGE

The charging system for the 2007 has been designed it to reach full charge in one hour and the light on the

Page 5

rear of the housing will come on when a full charge has been obtained.

NOTE: If the system has become too warm from heavy use or due to a high temperature environment, the light will come on immediately when connecting the charger to the drill. This condition will produce a slow charge rate (14-16 hours for a complete charge). in order to obtain the quick charge rate, disconnect the charger and place the drill in a cool environment for about 30 minutes or until you can connect the charger to the drill without the light coming on immediately.

DISCONNECTING THE CHARGERS

After the charging time has passed or you are ready to use the drill, unplug the charger from the power source and then from the drill.

A CAUTION Do not run the tool with the charger connected to prevent damage to charger.

NOTE: When not in use, the drill will lose approximately 1% of its charge per day. Also, when not charged for 90 days, the drill will charge only to 80% of capacity on the first charge. It will, however, return to 100% after several charges and uses. Thus, the best way to insure best battery performance is to use your drill frequently.

START / STOP

To start the drill, just slide the safety trigger lock to the "on" position and pull the trigger. When finished, release the trigger and return the trigger lock to the "off" position.

INSERTING BITS

Push the trigger lock to the off position and open the jaws enough to insert the shank. Insert the bit up to the bit flutes for small bits and as far as it will go on large ones. Center the bit as you close the jaws by hand. This will provide maximum contact between the jaws and the bit. To tighten the chuck, insert the chuck key into each of the three holes in succession and tighten firmly. The chuck can be released by using any one of the three holes. When finished, place the chuck key back in the handle of the tool.

DRILLING AND DRIVING TIPS
DRILLING PLASTIC

Use low speed when beginning the drilling operation. If possible, use a backing block. If not, ease up on the pressure just before the bit breaks through. This will keep you from splintering the back side. Then turn to the opposite side and complete the hole.

DRILLING METAL WITH 2-SPEED CONTROL

Use low speed to create a starting point. When drilling, be sure to use enough pressure to keep the bit cutting. Insufficient pressure will allow the bit

to spin in the hole. This will dull the bit and greatly shorten its life. Here are a couple of tips for drilling in metal. When drilling a large hole, it is usually faster in the long run to make a smaller hole and enlarge it to the required size. Also, you will find drilling in metal easier if you lubricate the tip of the bit occasionally with oil.

DRILLING MASONRY

Soft materials such as brick are relatively easy to drill. Concrete, however, will require much more pressure to keep the bit from spinning. Remember to always use carbide tipped bits for any sort of masonry work.

FASTENING WITH SCREWS

The procedure shown in Fig. 3 will enable you to fasten materials together with your Cordless Screwdriver without stripping, splitting, or separating the material.

First, clamp the pieces together and drill the first hole 2/3 the diameter of the screw. If the material is soft, drill only 2/3 the proper length. If it is hard, drill the entire length.

Second, unclamp the pieces and drill the second hole the same diameter as the screw shank in the first or top piece of wood.

Third, if a flat head screw is used, countersink the hole to make the screw flush with the surface. Then, simply apply even pressure when driving the screw. The screw shank clearance hole in the first piece allows the screw head to pull the pieces tightly together.

The adjustable screw drill accessory will do all of these operations quickly and easily. Screw drills are available for screw size No. 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Page 6

Maintenance

Preventive maintenance of your drill is easy. There are just 3 steps to follow:

1. Use a clean cloth to wipe oil, grease and other deteriorating substances from the tool.

ACAUTION Certain cleaning agents and solvents can damage plastic parts. Some of these are: gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents which contain ammonia. Avoiding use of these and other types of cleaning agents will minimize the possibility of damage.

2. Store the tool where it is cool and dry. Avoid areas where the temperature will drop to 0° F or exceed +120° F.

3. About once per year (depending on use), return your tool and charger to the nearest Skil Factory Service Center, Authorized Skil Service Station, or

other competent repair service. Check your telephone Yellow Pages under "Tools-Electric" or "Tools-Repair". Service will include:

  • Parts cleaned and inspected
  • Relubricated with fresh lubricant
  • Flectrical system tested
  • All repairs

All repairs, electrical or mechanical. should be attempted only by trained repairmen. Contact the nearest Factory Service Center, or Authorized Service Station or other competent repair service. Use only identical replacement parts, any other may create a hazard.
