Thepurposeofthisoperatormanualistopresentthedescriptions andproceduresrequiredtooperatetheSimradSH90inasafeand efcientmanner.

StudythischaptertofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeSimradSH90.
Aswithalladvancedinstruments,thereareafewimportant mattersabouttheSH90thatyoumustremember.
Beforeyouswitchonthesonar
Beforeyoupowerupthesonar,makesurethatyouhavesufcient waterdepthtolowerthetransducer!
Whenthesonarisnotinuse
Toprotectthesonarwhenitisnotinuse,westronglyadviceyou tohoistthetransducer,eventhoughyoumaynotswitchoffthe power.Innarroworshallowwatersthisisveryimportant,since youmay-inworstcase-runthetransducerintothebottom. Thiswilldamagethetransducerandthetransducershaft,and extensiverepairisrequired.
Whenyoudockthevessel
Itisveryimportantthatthesonarsystemremainss whenthevesselisindrydock.Ifthetransducerissubjected totransmitpowerwhenitisinopenair,itwillbedamaged. Asasafeguardingmeasure,youcanremovethepowerfuses onthesonarsystembeforethevesselisdocked.Asanextra safeguardingmeasure,thesonarisbydefaultpoweredupwith thetransmitpowerswitchedoff.
Manualoperationofthehullunit
Intheeventofimproperoperation,thepowerful3kWelectric motormaycauseseriousdamagetotheequipmentand/orinjury topersonnel.

Basicinformation

TheSimradSH90isanomnidirectionalhighfrequencysonar.

Itisdesignedforallsizedshingvessels,bothpurseseiners andtrawlers.
Theoperationalfrequencyis114kHz.Thecylindrical multi-elementtransducerallowstheomnidirectionalsonarbeam tobetiltedelectronicallyfrom+10to–60degrees.Thisallows youtoautomaticallytrackschoolsofsh,andtoobservethe wholewatervolumearoundthevessel.Astabilisingsystemis includedforelectronicpitchandrollcompensation.
Greatemphasishasbeenplacedongivingthebestpossible presentationsonahighresolutioncolourdisplay.
TheSH90ProcessorUnitiscontrolledbyMicrosoft’sWindows
®
XP
operatingsystem,whichresultinaexiblechoiceofdisplay
modesforalargerangeofuserapplications.
Thesignalprocessingandbeamformingisperformedinafast digitalsignalprocessingsystemusingthefulldynamicrange ofthesignals.
Inadditiontothetraditionalsinglefrequencytransceiversystem, theSimradSH90containsanadvancedfrequencymodulated ltersystem(FM).

OperatingPanel

Pleasendthebasicinformationrequiredtogetyoustartedup withtheSimradSH90.
Themostfrequentlyusedfunctionsaredirectlyaccessiblebythe designatedcontrolbuttonsontheOperatingPanel,andmayenter operationalcommandsdirectly.
Thebuttonsaregroupedineldsaccordingtotheirpurpose. Mostsonarfunctionsarealsoaccessibleandactivatedusingthe menusystemonthedisplayandthetrackballandSelectbutton ontheOperatingPanel.

HowtoadjusttheRCG

TheRCG(ReverberationControlledGain)regulatesthereceiver gainindividuallyforeachofthereceivingbeams.Ifyouselect asmallormediumvalue,echoesfrompropellers,surfaceand bottomreverberationswillbesuppressed,whiletargetechoes willremaininview.Ifyouselectastrongltersetting,itwill removethebottom,whileechoesonthebottomwillbepresented.

Inthemanualmodethetrawlsymbolwillbedisplayedwith theselectedsize,depthanddistance.WhentheFS70,FS900 orFS3000trawlsonarisconnected,thetrawlsymbolwill automaticallybedisplayedwiththecorrectdepthinthevertical modes.WhentheITItrawlsystemisconnected,thetrawlsymbol willbedisplayedwiththecorrectdistance,bearinganddepth. Ifrequired,thetrawlopening,ambientwatertemperature,and trawl-llingindicatormayalsobedisplayed.Thisisassumed thatthepropersensorsareconnectedtotheITIsystem.

CWmeanscontinuouswave,whichmeansthatthetransmission
frequencyisxedduringtheentirepulse.WhenyouuseCW transmissionyoucanchoosethelengthofthepulses.Inasearch phaseundergoodconditions,youshouldtrysettingLong.Ifthe conditionsworsen,trytoshortenthepulselength.Thiswillmake iteasiertodistinguishthevariousechoes,andthereverberation willbereduced.
ThedefaultsettingontheSH90sonarisFMAuto.Inthis transmissionmode,thesonarwillautomaticallychoosethe optimalpulselengthforthecurrentrange.

Aboutbeamwidths
