Thepurposeofthisreferencemanualistoprovidethe descriptions,proceduresanddetailedparameterexplanations requiredtoallowforsafeandefcientuseoftheSimradSH90, aswellasathoroughunderstandingofthesystemparameters andadjustments.
Agoodunderstandingofsystemfunctionsandcontrolsis essentialtofullytakeadvantageofthefunctionalityprovided. Seaconditionsvary,sometimesdrastically,anditisnot possibletoidentifysettingsthatwillprovidethebestdataat alltimes.Carefulstudyoftheinformationinthismanualis highlyrecommended,preferablywhileexploringthesystem’s functionality.

Beforeyouswitchonthesonar
Beforeyoupowerupthesonar,makesurethatyouhavesufcient waterdepthtolowerthetransducer!
Whenthesonarisnotinuse
Toprotectthesonarwhenitisnotinuse,westronglyadviceyou tohoistthetransducer,eventhoughyoumaynotswitchoffthe power.Innarroworshallowwatersthisisveryimportant,since youmay-inworstcase-runthetransducerintothebottom. Thiswilldamagethetransducerandthetransducershaft,and extensiverepairisrequired.
Whenyoudockthevessel
Itisveryimportantthatthesonarsystemremainss whenthevesselisindrydock.Ifthetransducerissubjected totransmitpowerwhenitisinopenair,itwillbedamaged. Asasafeguardingmeasure,youcanremovethepowerfuses onthesonarsystembeforethevesselisdocked.Asanextra safeguardingmeasure,thesonarisbydefaultpoweredupwith thetransmitpowerswitchedoff.

Ifyouthinkthatsomethinghasbeendamagedonthesonar, contactyourlocaldealerforadvice.

Basicinformation

TheSimradSH90isanomnidirectionalhighfrequencysonar.
Itisdesignedforallsizedshingvessels,bothpurseseiners andtrawlers.
Theoperationalfrequencyis114kHz.Thecylindrical multi-elementtransducerallowstheomnidirectionalsonarbeam tobetiltedelectronicallyfrom+10to–60degrees.Thisallows youtoautomaticallytrackschoolsofsh,andtoobservethe wholewatervolumearoundthevessel.Astabilisingsystemis includedforelectronicpitchandrollcompensation.
Greatemphasishasbeenplacedongivingthebestpossible presentationsonahighresolutioncolourdisplay .
TheSH90ProcessorUnitiscontrolledbyMicrosoft’sWindows
®
XP
operatingsystem,whichresultinaexiblechoiceofdisplay
modesforalargerangeofuserapplications.
Thesignalprocessingandbeamformingisperformedinafast digitalsignalprocessingsystemusingthefulldynamicrange ofthesignals.
Inadditiontothetraditionalsinglefrequencytransceiversystem, theSimradSH90containsanadvancedfrequencymodulated ltersystem(FM).

Thecolourdisplayisahigh-resolutionmonitor.Inaddition tothesonarpicture,themonitorwillalsodisplaythemenu systemfortheinteractiveoperation.Inordertoeasethesituation comprehension,certaincolourshavebeenchosentobetterthe distinctionbetweenthevariouselementsinthepresentation.
Thecolourdisplayisnotapartofthesonardelivery,anditmust bepurchasedlocally.

TheOperatingPanelcontainsallnecessarycontrolfunctionsfor normaloperationofthesonar.
Thecontrolsarearrangedinlogicalfunctiongroups,thisgivesa clearandeasyoperation.
Notethatallsonaroperationcanalsobemadeusingthetrackball ontheOperatingPanelandthemenusystem.Y oucanalsousea standardcomputermouse.
ProcessorUnit
TheProcessorUnitisamarinecomputerbasedontheMicrosoft WindowsXP®operatingsystem.Itisdesignedforruggeduse.
Thecomputerisbasedonacommercialdesign,butthesoftware andhardwarehasbeenspeciedandassembledbySimradtosuit theSH90requirements.
ThecomputerholdsaDVDplayerforusewithfuturesoftware upgrades.

OperatingPanelpowersupply
Asmallpowersupplyisimplementedtoprovidestand-bypower totheOperatingPanel.Thepowersupplyisconnectedtothe ProcessorUnit.

Sonarroomunits

TransceiverUnit
TheSH90TransceiverUnitislocatedinthesonarroom,closeto theHullUnit.
Thetransceiverperformsthetransmissionandreceptioncontrol ofthe480transmittersand480receiverchannels.16identical transceiverboardsareused.Adedicatedpowersupplyis providedtosupplytherequiredDCvoltagestothetransceiver. OneEthernetcableisusedforcommunicationwiththeProcessor Unitinthewheelhouse,andasecondEthernetcableisusedto controlthehullunit.ThethirdEthernetcableconnectstothe PowerSupplyUnit.
Thetransducercablesfromthehullunitarepluggedintotheside walloftheTransceiverUnitcabinetusingaspecialplug.
TheTransceiverUnitismountedonthebulkheadusingpowerful shockabsorbers.Theconnectorsforpowerandinterfaceare locatedatthebottomofthecabinet.
PowerSupplyUnit
Adedicatedpowersupplycabinetisusedtoprovidethe TransceiverUnitwithoperationalpower.

WARNING
Thepowersupplycabinetcontainshighvoltages. DonotopenthecabinetdoorwhiletheSH90is switchedon.
HullUnit
TheHullUnitisdesignedtolowerthetransducer1.0meters belowtheship’shull.
Thetransducercanalsobeloweredtoanyselectedmiddle position.Incaseofvoltagefailure,thetransducercanberaised orloweredmanuallybymeansofahandcrank.
Thesensorfortheelectronicstabilisationofthesonarbeams ishousedintheMotorControlUnit,whichismountedonthe HullUnit.
WARNING
Ifthetransducerhitslargerobjectsorbottom,the transducershaftmaybebent,or-inworstcase­itcanbebrokenoff.Abrokentransducershaftwill causewaterleakagethroughthetopoftheshaft.
Insuchcases,d itsupperposition.
Topreventseriousdamage,youmusthaveawater pumpandawarningsysteminthesonarroom.

Basicfunctionality

ThebasicprinciplesoftheSimradSH90areuniquebecause ofthe480transmitterand480receiverchannelswiththeir transducerelementsspreadaroundonthecylindricaltransducer.
Thetransmission,receptionanddataprocessingareunder computercontrol,andthepowerfulcapabilitiesofthesonarare theresultsofsophisticateddigitalsignalprocessingsoftware andstateofthearthardware.

Omnibeam

WhentheOmnibeamistilted,thetotalbeampicturecanbe comparedwithfoldinganumbrella,whichmeansthatallbeams in360degreesaroundthevesselhavethesametiltangle.

Inadditiontoseeingthetargetfromabove,itisalsopossible toseethetargetfromtheside,byusingtheverticalslice presentation.Inthiscasethebeamcoversacontinuousvertical beamfrom0to-60degreesinonetransmission.

InadditiontotheOmnipicture,theverticalsliceisespecially usefulforvisualizingtheverticaldistributionofaschoolof sh.Inthatway,itisnotnecessarytogooverthetargettosee thedistributionontheechosounder,whichoftenresultsina spreadingoftheschool.

Stabilisationsystem

TheSimradSH90isprovidedwithastabilisationsystem.
Whenthebeamstabilizerisactivated,bothhorizontaland verticalbeamswillbestabilizedelectronicallyforrollandpitch movementsupto±20degrees.Thebeamdirectionwillthen changecontinuouslyaccordingtothevessel’smovements,and secureanoptimalcontactwiththetargetseveninroughseas.

Thereceiverltersoutthosesignalsthatarethesameasthe transmitted.Thisprovidesalteringeffect,whichefciently reducesinterference,noiseandreverberation.Inadditionto givingacleanandstableechopresentation,thiswillnormally alsoincreasethesonar’sdetectionrange.Theadvantageof theFMcorrelationlteristhatitretainsthehighresolutionin rangewithlongpulselengthsandhighenergy,andthatitisnot sensitivetomovingtargets.
AGC(AutomaticGainControl)
TheAGC(AutomaticGainControl)sensestheecholevelin severaldirections,andusethisasabasisforadjustingallthe receiverbeams.TheAGCwillthusprovideautomaticscaling ofthedatainordertomaintainproperdynamicrangebasedon allechovalues
Thestrengthoftheltercanbeselectedinthemenu.
RCG(ReverberationControlledGain)
TheRCGfunctionadjustthepicturetominimizeinuencefrom bottomandsurfacereverberation.
Thestrengthoftheltercanbeselectedinthemenu.With maximumstrengthisselected,theRCGwilleffectivelyreduce thebottominshallowwater,whilevariationsonthebottom willbedisplayed.Notethatscatteredshcanbeperceivedas reverberation.TheRCGltermustthereforebeusedwithcareif scatteredschoolsaretobedetected.
Ping-to-pinglter
TheeSimradSH90isequippedwithaping-to-pinglter(PP Filter)toprovideacleanandsteadypresentationbyreducingthe interferenceandnoise.Thisltercomparestheechoesfroma

TheTimeV ariableGain(TVG)functioncontrolsthegainof thereceiversothataschoolwithagivensizeanddensityis presentedwithapproximatelythesamestrengthonthedisplay, insidetheregulatedTVGrange.Thiscanalsobeseenasalter, becauseitreducesthenoiseclosetothevessel.Theregulated strengthoftheTVGcanbeselectedinthemenu.
Noiselter
Thenoiselterisdesignedtoremoveunwantedacousticnoise fromthesonarpicture.Itwillreducetheinterferencefromother acousticsystems(sonarsandechosounders)onyourownvessel andfromothervesselsinthevicinity.Itwillalsosuppressthe noisefromyourownpropellersandfromothersimilarnoise sources.

Transmission

ThetransmissioniscontrolledfromtheProcessorUnit.The parametersyouhavechosenaretransferredtotheTransceiver UnitbymeansoftheEthernetcable.
TheTransceiverUnitcontains480transmitterchannelswhich aredistributedon16identicaltransceivercircuitboards.Each transmitterchannelisindividuallyloadedwiththeparametersfor therelevanttransducerelementposition.Theparametersinclude poweroutputandtimedelaytoformabeamwiththeselected beamangle.
Whenthestabilisingsystemisactive,thetiltangleforeachbeam willautomaticallybecorrectedrelativetothevessel’spitchand rollmovements.

TheSimradSH90isasingle114kHzsonarwithbeam stabilisation.
