SILVA MARINE COMPASS 125T
Our pe destal com pass desi gned for boats and y achtsmen t hat demand ab solute accurac y and a steady car d in all condi tions and heeling a ngles. Th e SILVA 125T compass is suitab le for most larg er sailing b oats and motor yac hts and owi ng to the effe ctive dampenin g of the compas s card , it is the corr ect choic e even for lar ger speedb oats.
The co mpass per mits up to 45° heeling and unlimi ted tilting fore and a ft. The two ext ra lubber line s at 45° offs et permit r eading fro m the rail or an o ff steeri ng position mounting. The lubb er line s are counter -balance d and will remain ve rtical ev en in rough se as. All lub ber lines ar e easil y read throu gh the patented tra nsparent compas s card. A sig hting peg fr om the centre elimi nates paralla x errors an d facilit ates off cou rse beari ngs.
125T ha s an apparen t scale size of 12 5 mm, a gimbal led cradle a nd the standard 175 mm base plate fits m ost steer ing pedest als. Fur ther features inc lude the pos sibilit y to compens ate for magne tic field distur bance and it is also p ossible to a dd a heeling c ompensat or. The int egrated illum ination in th e adjustab le protect ion cover of fers ideal night v ision.

ILLUMINATION
This compass can b e supplied w ith illumination 12 V. Adaptatio n to 24V-illu mination co nnected in s eries by a re sistor of 27 0 ohm, 0.5 W.
POSITIONING
The co mpass shou ld be positi oned where it can be easil y read from al l angles, e ven in darkness w hen illumi nated. Posi tion the comp ass as far as possible aw ay from iro n objects o r other disturbin g magnetic s ources as lo ud speakers, win dscreen w ipers, ins trument s etc. NB! SILVA s electronic ins truments do not distur b the compas s.
When c hecking fo r magnetic di sturbance, use a n ordinar y SILVA handhel d compass , held in the fore -and-aft direc tion aroun d the intende d mounting si te. In most ca ses 0.5 to 1 met re betwee n the com pass and the s ource of dis turbance w ill be sufficie nt. Do not for get to switc h on all elec trical eq uipment nea r the compas s when makin g this check .
MOUNTING
The SI LVA 125 come s with a socket Ø 175 mm (7.0”) which f its most s tandard st eering sy stems.
The co mpass shou ld be mounted o n a firm base to prev ent oscill ation of the card. To avo id engin e vibrations a ru bber sheet c an be placed u nder the soc ket.
When m ounting on a st eering pedest al the base mu st have a Ø 175 mm (7.0”) minim um. If the base i s smaller, a teak- or mahogany plate c an be mounte d on the pedes tal as a base f or the socket.
1. Loos en the black m ounting ri ng (see fig) .
2. Loos en the 2 screw s and lift off the compass.
3. Alig n the socket ex actly in the fore-and-a ft direction an d fit it to the ba se with 4 screws of non- magnetic ma terial. The scre ws should b e fitted in th e centre of the o val holes in t he bottom of the s ocket to allo w for adjustment la ter. N.B. Mount th e socket wit h the compensation adju ster screw s to starbo ard.
4. Mount t he compass a nd the mounti ng ring with the lamp bod y and the lubber line towar ds the bow.
COMPENSATION AND DEVIATION
Comp ensation i s recommended, if t he deviati on is more than 5 degre es, when th e compass is in its normal mounting position.
If the er ror is less than 5 de grees, it i s sufficient to produce a d eviation t able. The co mpensation is mad e with the two comp ensation a djuster screws “ E/W” a nd “N/S” in orde r to reduce the e rrors caused by iron ob jects or ot her source s of magnetic d isturban ce.
When c ompensat ing, the boa t should be in an a rea that is not affe cted by per manent- or ele ctromagnetic disturbances.
1. Aim t he boat due North an d turn the ”N /S” screw un til the compa ss reading is 0°.
2. Aim th e boat due Eas t and turn the ”E/ W” scre w until the compass r eading is 90 °.
3. Aim th e boat due Sou th. If the compass d oes not show 18 0°, turn the ”N/S” s crew until th e erro r is halved. (E .g. If the er ror is 6° - turn the screw until th e error is 3 °.)
4. Aim th e boat due Wes t. If the comp ass does not s how 270°, tu rn the screw until th e error is halved.
5. Go through th e procedur e again and che ck the adjus ted values .
6. Check the compass e very 20 de grees and produc e a deviatio n table and de viation curve.
7. Mark the p osition of th e compass on t he base if the c ompass is r emoved.
As the magne tic conditi ons in a boat ar e liable to cha nge, we reco mmend chec king of the com pass o nce a year and alway s after inst allation of equip ment which m ight affec t the compa ss.
NB! Do no t regard the c ompass as a n accurat e navigati onal inst rument un til the comp ensation is c arried o ut and the dev iation ta ble is prod uced. Whe never in dou bt, pleas e seek the advi ce of a compa ss adjust er!
