MODELS MSI-30B(C) / MSI-51BD Manual Stations
INTRODUCTION
The Models MSI-30B and MSI-51BD Manual Stations from Siemens Building Technologies, Inc., are addressable devices containing advanced control panel communication technology. This technology, which provides two-direction communication with the control panel, produces an Intelligent Initiating Device.
OPERATION
The MSI-30B/-51BD manual station housing has a pull down lever that locks in position after releasing a spring loaded switch (See Figure 3). To indicate the manual station is activated, the pull down lever remains down and locked until the station is reset. The MSI-30B/-51BD is reset by opening the hinged housing cover with an Allen key and then closing and locking the cover.
Fire Safety
The MSI-30B has a keyswitch which can activate a second address. The MSI-30B and MSI-51BD have a set of normally closed auxiliary contacts which are available for releasing door holders and magnetic door locks.

INSTALLATION
1. Locate the opening on the MSI cover that allows access to the programming points on the MSI printed circuit board. (Refer to Figure 1.)
2. The manual stations are programmed by using the Model FPI-32 Programmer/Tester. Connect the MSI-30B/-51BD to the Programmer/Tester by
MSI Cover
NOTES:
1. Recommended wire sizes: 18 AWG minimum, 14 AWG maximum
2. Wire larger than 14 AWG can damage the connector.
3. When using shielded cable without metal raceway or with
nonmetallic raceway, the shields should be terminated at the device ground terminal. If the device box is already grounded by another means, such as being mounted to a grounded structure, then the wire shields should be continuous and must be grounded solely at the point of origin;

4. When using shielded cable with metal raceway, the wiring shields shall be continuous and grounded solely at the point of origin. The device ground terminal shall be connected to the grounded device box.
5. When using metal raceway without shielded cable, connect the device ground terminal to the grounded device box.
6. Metal raceway should be continuously grounded throughout the system.

using the cable provided with the Programmer/ Tester.
NOTE: The connection from the FPI-32 to the MSI-30B/-51BD is not polarity sensitive. However, connection from the Control Panel to the MSI-30B/
-51BD is polarity sensitive.
3. Following the instructions given in the FPI-32 Programmer/Tester Manual (P/N 315-090077), program the MSI-51BD to the desired address. To program the MSI-30B, follow the instructions on page 3.
4. Record the device address on the label located on the MSI-30B/-51BD housing. (See Figure 1.)
5. Distribute the manual station boxes throughout the protected area so that they are unobstructed, readily acessible, and located in the normal exit path.
6. Place the manual station according to the regulations of the authorities having jurisdiction.
For surface mounting, mount the backplate of the MSI-30B/-51BD to a Model MC-5 Backbox. (Refer to Figure 3.)
For flush mounting, mount the backplate to a usersupplied single gang switchbox.
CAUTION: Do not overtighten the screws. Overtightening may distort the backplate.
7. Install the MSI-30B/-51BD. (Refer to Figure 3.)
8. Wire the MSI-30B/-51BD to the System. (Refer to Figure 2 for proper connections.)
9. In supervisory: MSI-30B/-51BD draws 1mA.

Programming Instructions
MODEL MSI-30B Manual Station
When programming the MSI-30B with the FPI-32 Field Programmer, you must first determine the software revision of the Field Programmer. This is done by powering up the FPI-32 and reading the software revision shown on the display.
The Test and Menu Modes are the same for FPI-32 Revision 1.2 and 1.3 software.
With revision 1.2 software, use the following procedure for programming Two Stage Manual Stations (MSI-30B) using the FPI-32 Field Programmer.
PROGRAM MODE:
1. Select 1 = MXL mode for programming the device addresses.
NOTE: System XL3 does not support the use of the MSI-30B manual station. Therefore, the XL3 programming mode should never be used.
2. Select the address required for the keyswitch (second address). The device automatically defaults the first address (pull station) to the selected address minus one.
Example: If the required address for the device is 10 and 11, select address 11 in the program mode and the FPI-32 will address the device to 10 and 11.
NOTE: Revision 1.2 software does not allow the programming of an MSI-30B to addresses 59 and
60. Do not use this combination.
With revision 1.3 software, use the following procedure for programming Two Stage Manual Stations (MSI-30B) using the FPI-32 Field Programmer.
PROGRAM MODE:
1. Select 1 = MXL mode for programming the device addresses.
NOTE: System XL3 does not support the use of the MSI-30B manual station. Therefore, the XL3 programming mode should never be used.
2. Select the address required for the pull station (first address). The device automatically defaults the second address (key switch) to the selected address plus one.
Example: If the required address for the device is 10 and 11, select address 10 in the program mode and the FPI-32 will address the device to 10 and 11.
TEST MODE:
Test mode does not thoroughly test the device. This mode only tests the first address of the unit. For more complete testing, use the menu mode.
MENU MODE:
Test
This test mode only checks that the device is responding. For complete testing, move on to the analog portion of menu mode.
Analog
When selecting READ ANALOG RESPONSES in the menu mode, you can read the actual voltages being sent by the device. The programmer allows you to toggle between the two addresses by press-ing the NO key. After selecting an address, press the YES key to display the voltages. The voltage windows for the MSI-30B are:
CAL 3.75 – 4.25 ID 7.12 – 8.00 ID-2 5.12 – 6.00 A2 (STBY) 0.63 – 5.88 A2 (ALARM) 6.00 – 8.00
