Important safety precautions

Read these guidelines before using your wireless phone. Failure to comply with them ma y be dangerous or illegal.
Road safety at all times
Do not use a hand-held phone while driving; park the vehicle first.
Switching off when refuelling
Do not use the phone at a refuelling point (service station) or near fuels or chemicals.
Switching off in an aircraft
Wireless phones can cause interference. Using them in an aircraft is both illegal and dangerous.
Switching off near all medical equipment
Switch off your phone near medical equipment. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy. Follow any regulations or rules in force.
Interference
All wireless phones may be subject to interference, which could affect their performance.
Important safety precautions
Sensible Use
Use only in the normal position (held to the ear). Avoid unnecessary contact with the antenna when the phone is switched on.
Emergency call
Key in the emergency number for your present location, then press . Give all necessary information as accurately as possible. Do not end the call until given permission to do so.
Keeping small children away from your phone
Keep the phone and all its parts including accessories out of the reach of small children.
Accessories and Batteries
Use only Samsung-approved accessories and batteries. Use of any unauthorized accessories could damage your phone and may be dangerous.
Use only Smsung-approved batteries and recharge your battery only with Samsung-approved chargers.
Qualified Service
Only qualified service personnel may repair your phone.
Special Regulations
Meet any spe cial regulations in force in any area and always with off your phone whenever it is forbidden to use it, or when it may ca use interference or danger (in a hospital for example).
Water Resistance
Your phone is not water-resistant. Keep it dry.

Your phone h as an exter na l display on the fr ont of the phone. It indicates when you have an incoming call or a message. It also alerts you at the specified time when you have set an alarm. The backlight turns on and the corresponding icon appears on the external display.
When you close the phone, the display shows the current time on a digital clock.
Backlight
The backlight illuminates the display and keypad. When you press any key or open the phone, the backlight turns on and remains on for a given period of time, depending on the setting in the
Display/Light
menu (
MENU 8-2
).

Service light

The service light on the front of the phone flashes to indicate an incoming call, message, or alarm, and flashes for a few seconds when you turn the phone on or off.
You can select the time period for the service light to blink in the See page 147 for further details.

The camera module at the top center of your phone allows you to take a photo or record a video while on the move.

Flash

Getting started

You can use the built-in flash on the front of the phone to view the external disp lay or to tak e photos when it is dark. You can also use the flash in emergency conditions.
With the external display on, press and hold on the left side of the phone to turn the flash on or off.
If you receive a notification of an incoming message or a notice of a missed call, you need to clear those items before you can use the flash. See page 53 for further details.

Using the battery

Your phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Note
: You must fu lly ch arge the battery before using
your phone for the first time. A discharged standard battery recharges fully in approximately 200 minutes.
Installing the battery
1. Place the battery so that the tabs on the end align with the slots at the bottom of the phone.
2. Press the battery down until it clicks into place.

1. If necessary, switch off the phone by pressing and holding until the power-off image displays.
2. To remove the battery:
Slide the battery catch lock toward the top of
the phone and hold it in that position.
Lift away the battery, as shown.
Charging the Battery
A travel charger and a desktop charger are provided for charging your batteries.
2. Plug the adapter into a standard AC wall outlet.
3. When charging is finished, unplug the adapter from both the power outlet and the phone by pressing the buttons on both sides of the connector and pulling out the connector.
Using the Travel Charger
The travel charger allows you to use the phone while the battery is charging, but this will cause the battery to charge more slowly.
1. With the battery in position on the phone, plug the travel charger connector into the jack at the bottom of the phone.
Make sure that the arrow on the connector is facing toward the front of the phone.

: Do not remove the battery from the phone
without unplugging the adapter. Otherwise, the phone may be damaged.

Using the Desktop Holder
Using the desktop holder, you can charge the battery.
The phone can be used while the battery is charging, but this increases the time it takes to charge your battery. T o get the quickest charge for any battery, turn off the phone.
1. Plug the power cord of the desktop holder into a standard AC outlet.
When the power is connected properly , the small lights, or LEDs, on the charger, flicker briefly and then turn off.
LED
The LED on the charger indicates the charging progress by the following colours:
• Red: the battery is being charged.
• Green: the battery is completely charged.
When charging is completed and the LED changes to green, remove the battery or phone from the desktop holder and unplug the power cord of the charger from the AC outlet.
Low battery indicator
When the battery is weak and only a few minu tes of talk time remain, a warning tone sounds and “Low battery” displays once.
When the battery becomes too weak for th e pho ne to operate, it swit ches off automatically.
2. Place the phone, with the battery attac hed, into the front compartment.
The small LED on the charger turns on.

Switching on or off the phone

1. Open the phone, if necessary.
2. Press and hold for more than one second to switch on the phone.
The service light flashes and then the idle screen appears on the display as soon as the system locates service.
If the phone is out of a service area, the No Service icon ( ) appears on the display. In this case, you cannot place and receive calls. Try again later when service is available.

3. When you wish to switch off the phone, press and hold for m ore th a n 2 second s .
WARNING!
Do not switch on the phone when mobile phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
Note
: Do not touch the antenna on the phone
unnecessarily when the phone is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects the call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed.

Your phone’s modes

Standby mode
Standby mode is your phone’s basic state. The phone goes into Standby mode soon after you turn it on, or whenever you briefly press . When your phone is in Standby mode, you will typically see the current time and date. If you enter a phone number, you can press to dial it, or press to save it in Phonebook.
Press at any time to return to Standby mode. Be careful; if you are on a call when you press , your phone disconnects the call and returns to Standby mode.
Talk mode
You can place and answer calls only when your phone is turned on. During a call, the phone is in Talk mode. While you are in Talk mode, pressing
gives you a list of options. See page 36 for
details.
Power save mode
Your phone comes with a Power Save feature that is automatically activated if your phone is unable to find a signal after 15 minutes of searching. While this feature is active, the phone’s battery charge is conserved. To return to Standby mode, press any key .

When you lock your phone using the menu ( Lock mode, you can receive messages and calls, but you cannot place a call or use the phone’s menu functions.
To unlock the phone temporarily, press and enter the lock code.

Silent mode
Silent mode disables all sounds on the phone. This feature is best used in situations where the phone might disturb others, such as in a meeting, in a library, or in a theater. Your phone can be set to Silent mode with a press of a key in Standby mode.
To enter Silent mode, press and hold until “Silent mode enabled” and the Vibration icon ( ) appear.
To exit and reactivate the previous sound settings, press and hold until “Silent mode disabled” appears. The Vibration icon no longer displays.

Making a call

To make a call:
1. In Standby mode, enter the area code and phone number.
While entering a phone number, press to insert a hard pause. For further details about pause dialing, see page 31.
2. Press . The phone places the call to the entered phone numb er.

: You can press and hold the number key
corresponding to the last digit of the phone number to begin dialing.

Ending a call

When you want to finish your call, press . The call time, or the length of the call, displays,
along with the phone number of the other party. If the number is stored in your Phonebook, the name displays. If there is no match, you can press and store the number in Phonebook. For further details about storing a number, see page 27.
Or, simply close the phone to end a call.

Using the recent call logs

The phone stores up to 90 calls dialed, received, or missed, chronologically . The last call is saved in the first position.
To recall any of these numbers:
1. If there are characters on the display, return to Standby mode by pressing .
2. Press . The list of recent calls displays.

Making a call from Phonebook

You can store the phone numbers you call regularly in the phone’s memory , wh i c h is ca ll ed “Phonebook.” For further details about the Phonebook feature, see page 54.
Saving a number with a name in Phonebook
1. Press after ending a call or entering the phone number you want to save by using the number keypad.
2. Select an icon to identify the category in which the number is to be stored.
To select the category, press the Left or Right key and press the .
3. Press the Navigation keys to move through the fields and fill in each field as needed.

Finding and dialing a number in Phonebook
1. Press in Standby mode.
2. When Name highlights, enter the first few letters
of the name by pressing the associated alphanumeric keys and press .
The phone searches for the names on the list containing those characters, and then displays the corresponding entries in alphabetical order.
3. Press or to scroll to a name.

• To enter a number, press and hold the corresponding key, or press until ( ) highlights. Then press the key you want.
• Press to clear the characters one by one. Pressing and holding the key clears the display.

Speed-dialing

Once you have stored phone numbers in Phonebook, you can dial them easily with a few presses of the keys.
Enter the memory location of the number you want to dial, and then hold the final digit to dial.
One-touch dial
009 are special one-touch locations. You can dial the phone numbers stored in them simply by pressing one key.
Press and hold the third digit of the memory location containing the number to be dialed.

Two-touch dial
digits. Press the second digit briefly, then hold down the
third digit of the memory cell. For example

Four-digit dialing

You can quickly dial a phone number in Phonebook or the Calls log by entering its last four digits. Your phone searches for the entire number for you.
1. Enter the last four digits of the phone number. Your phone displays the phone number(s) matching your input.
2. Scroll through the numbers, if necessary, using the Navigation keys to display the one you want.
3. Press to dial the number.

Pause dialing

When you call an automated system, like a banking service, you are often required to enter a password or account number. Instead of manually entering the numbers each time, you can store the numbers in your Phoneb ook, separa ted by special cha racters, which are called pauses.
Storing pauses in a Phonebook entry
To store a number in your Phonebook that contains pauses:
1. Enter the phone number you w ant to store, such as the bank’s teleservice phone number.

2. Press to insert a pause. A “P” displays, meaning that a hard pause will occur at that point in the dialing sequence.
The “P” stops the dialing and waits for the teleservice to prompt you for a number. The number following the “P” is your account number, PIN, etc.
3. Enter the digits that need to follow the pause, such as your account number.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add more pauses and numbers, if necessary.
5. Store the number in your Phonebook as you normally would by pressing .
6. Select an icon to identify the category in which the number is to be stored.
To select the category, press the Left or Right key and press .
7. Follow the procedure from step 1 on page 59.
Pause dialing from a stored Phonebook entry
Manual pause dialing
You can enter pauses manually during the dialing process.
1. Enter the phone number of the s ervice you wa nt to call, such as a bank’s teleservice phone number.
2. Press to insert a pause. The screen displays a “P” indicating a pause.
3. Enter the number to be sent after the pause by pressing the digit keys.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add more pauses and numbers, if necessary,
5. Press .
6. After connecting, wait for th e pr om p t from teleservice. Press again after the prompt to send the additional number(s).
1. Dial the number from Phonebook.
2. Wait for the appropriate promp t from the number you are calling.
3. When prompted, press to send the DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-Frequency) number that follows your pause.
“Send DTMF” flashes on the display and the transmitted tone sounds.

Adjusting the volume during a call

During a call, if you want to adjust the voice volume, use th e Volume keys on the left si de of the phone.
Press to increase the volume level and to decrease the level. The image on the display shows all 4 levels; the more bars you see, the higher the level is.
In Standby mode, you can also adjust the keypad tone and function volume using these keys.

Rejecting a call

To reject an incoming call, press and hold on the left side of the phone when your phone is open.

Answering a call

When somebody calls you, the phone alerts you by ringing and blinking the service light on the front of the phone.
If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phone number, or name if stored in Phonebook, displays.

Viewing missed calls

If you do not answer a call for any reason, the phone indicates a missed call with a text notification on the screen.
If the display informs you of a missed call, press to access the Calls log list.
Or, press to clear the message and return to Standby mode.
You can also view missed calls via the menu ( the icon. For details, see page 58.

Your phone provides a number of functions that you can use during a call. As some of these options are network services, you may not be able to use all of them at all times.

Switching to Whisper mode

Call forwarding

This feature provides the option of forwarding incoming calls to another phone number, even though your phone is turned off. Activating Call Forwarding does not affect outgoing calls made from this phone. Contact your service pro v ider to activate Call Forwarding.

Call waiting

You can answer an incoming call while you have a call in progress, if this service is supported by the network. Contact your service pro vide r to ac tivate Call Waiting.
When a new call is detected, the incoming call alert sounds, depending on the network, and a text notification displays.
To answer a waiting call:
1. To answer the call, press . The phone connects the calling person and places the current person on hold.

Three-way calling

This feature enables you to conduct conference calls with 2 separate peop le at the same tim e. The phone records the 2 people into the Outgoing call log. You are billed airtime for each of the outgoing calls separately. Contact your service provider to activate Three-way Calling.
To make a three-way call:
1. During a conversation, enter the phone numbe r for the third person and press .
2. When the third person answers, press again to begin your three-way call.
When one of the callers hangs up, you and the remaining caller stays connected. If you initiated the call and you hang up first, all 3 people are disconnected.
2. Press again to switch between the 2 people.
3. To end the call, press or close the phone. All calls are disconnected.
