Questions and comments to Samsung
1) The parameters chosen seem to benefit active eye-glasses displays compared to
non-active. This approach could be challenged by people reading the report. We
suggest adding some parameters to also show the benefit of passive glasses so that
the report is more objective.
2) The viewing distance of 2h ( image heights) is too short. A viewing distance of 3h
(ITU Rec 709) or the TCO viewing distance of 1.5d (diagonal). These two are more
standardized than 2h and gives about the same distance within a few cm. One could
measure at shorter distances if convenient and recalculated for more common
viewing distances
3) Why are no color or contrast measurements included?
4) Since the response time, like motion blur, could affect the cross-talk for shutter eyeglass displays, it could be included. What is your opinion on that?
5) Samsung proposes ±27 degrees, which is odd. Why not measure ± 30 degrees?
6) Maybe it is not necessary to measure a vertical angle of 15 degrees from below. Very
few people watch TV from below.
7) For flicker not only the intensity but also the flicker frequency is important.
8) If you are going to measure Cm some sort of contrast sensitivity function could be
included.
9) To measure 3D fatigue is very difficult, especially in a short project. What is included
in the 3D fatigue concepts? This must be explained before doing any measurements.
10) At present we can only do the measurement on static images like test patterns. But
the results may not be 100% representative for 3D moving images.
11) Many active eye-glasses have a very short cable from the computer to the IR
transmitter. We need a cable of at least 2 m because we want to have the transmitter
in a black box close to the eye-glasses. Is it possible to modify the TV with a longer
cable or use radio controlled glasses?
12) It would be very good and convenient to have a pattern generator like the one
Samsung uses, MS PG-6100. Do you know the price and where to buy one? Is it
possible to borrow one from Samsung for this project because it may take some time
to buy one?
13) If possible it would be interesting to have some plasma 3DTV to look at in the project.
Toshiba has a new 3DTv and Panasonic has a 3D plasma, i.e. from Panasonic.
14) One of the most important parameter to measure is the gamma curve and at the
same time measure the colors of the grey levels chosen. The color temperatures of
the TV’s we have measured are far from the correct values.
15) None of the standards you refer to are dealing with moving images.
16) Are the graphs in the powerpoint file from real measurements?
17) All modern TVs have a setup that could be altered by the user, i.e. the brightness,
local dimming etc. If these setting are changed by the user, will this change be used
when switching to 3D mode or has the 3D mode a default setting of the display
parameters and could not be changed? Local dimming could affect the results of the
i.e. the cross-talk measurements and the gamma curve.
