About the softwa re
Although your Compaq A3000 can be used as a standalone copier, you will derive the greatest benefit from your A3000 by connecting it to your computer and installing the included software.
Installing the software will allow you to:
Print from your computer
Scan images to your computer
Scan documents to email or word processing programs
Adjust the Compaq A3000 settings
Upload picture albums to the internet
And more!
What’s on the CD
The A3000 driver CD includes the following s oftware:
Printer driver
The printer driver tells th e com puter what kind of printer you are using and controls the various settings, such as print quality and pape r type. You define these settings within the printer driver, which then communicates th e settings to both the comp uter and the printer.
2
Chapter 1
Scanner driver
The scanner driver allows you to scan pictures or other images. The driver is compatible with any graphics or OCR (Optical Character Recognition) application program that supports the TWAIN standard; for example,
Imaging
Compaq

Scanning
The Compaq A3000 offers two ways to scan a document. You can scan:
Using your computer
Using the Scan button
You can scan a document while your A3000 is printing a previous print job, but not while you are making copies. Making copies requir es the use of the scanner.
The driver supports s canning from the bundl ed applications on the CD as well as all your fa vorite scanning programs.
Scanning
Important:
The scanner is locked for shipping. Make sure you have unlocked the scanner before you attempt any scanning operations. For instructions on unlock ing the scanner, See “Unlocking and locking the scanner” on page 45.
Positioning the document
The Compaq A3000 can scan items in a range of thicknesses, from thin items (such as a sheet of paper, a magazine, or a photograph), to thicker items (such as a book).
Positioning a thin document
To scan a thin document, such as a sheet of paper or photograph:
Lift the top cover of the A3000.

Lift the top cover of the A3000 until it is at a 90 degree angle. The cover will be straight up and dow n.
Pull the cover gently upward. The cover will pull out of the hinge slots. Gently store the cover on a nearby table or desk.

When you have completed your scan, replace the cover by sliding the cover hinges into their slots.
Caution:
While the cove r is removed, do not look directly at the scanner lamp. The light can be bright for your eyes. Always use the scanner cover when possible.
Scanning with the computer
To scan and save files on the PC, the Compaq A3000 provides a standard TWAIN interface for scanning documents.
TWAIN is a common scann er interface supported by many application programs. Because the A3000 supports TWAIN, it is compatible with a wide range of software.

The Kodak Imaging for Windows program comes standard with Windows. Use it for your simple scanning needs.

convert your scanned documents to A SCII text and place the text in your email program for editing. If you select another file type with the Settings Utili ty, your documents will be scanned using the file type you choose and attached to you email messag e.
Once your document is s canned, your email progr am will launch. The document text will be added or the scanned images will be attached. Simply enter a subject, select your recipients from your email address book, and send!

description of the file naming convention used.
Scanning to applications
The remaining Scan To menu options are for defining your own Scan To destinations. You can define up to six (6) applications, numbered 3 through 8.
Scanning
For instance, you can add and scan to BMP files for editing, add and scan to the RTF format for word processing, or scan to a program like your images to the internet!
Once your document is scanned, the application program will automatically launch and will load the scanned document.
Note:
See “Scan To Menu” on page 13 for information o n setting up your Scan To destination menu.
Adjusting scanner settings
When using your computer to scan, the scanner settings are controlled by the applicati on you are using. If the application uses the TWAIN dialog, you can control the resolution, contrast, brightness, and more.
When scanning with the A3000 settings are controlled by the Settings Utility. See “Scan Settings” on page 13 for more informati on.

The nozzles are located on the bottom of the ink cartridge. To desolve any dried ink, hold a damp cloth agains t the nozzles for about three (3) seconds. Gently blot and allow to dry.
To clean the contacts on the back of the cartridge, gent ly blot with a damp cloth and allow to dry before r e placing.
Preserving print cartridges
To ensure the longest life fro m your print cartridges and optimum performance from your A3000:
Keep a new print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install it.
44
Chapter 6
Do not remove a print cartridge except to replace, clean, or store it in an air-tight container. The print cartridge will not print correctly if removed from the A3000 and left exposed for an extended period of time.
If a print cartridge runs out of ink, leav e the empty cartridge in the A3000 until you are ready to replace it. Printing with one of the print cartridge c a rriers empty may reduce the life o f your printer.
Compaq does not recommend the use of refilled cartridges. Refilling cartridges can affect print quality and cause damage to the A3000. For best results, use Compaq recommended supplies. Compaq’s Limited Warranty does not cover repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge.
