Electronic Lock Indicator
12-volt system
The electronic lock indicator is a tractor/trailer fifth wheel coupling aid and is intended as an additional
safety check to assure the driver of a safe and complete coupling. It does not eliminate the requirement for a
visual inspection of the fifth wheel.
ALWAYS GET OUT OF THE TRACTOR
CAB AND VISUALLY INSPECT THE
FIFTH WHEEL COUPLING!
OPERATION
Failure to properly install, operate or maintain a fifth
wheel may result in tractor and trailer separation
which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.
Power:.........................................The Electronic Lock Indicator (ELI) automatically turns on when the tractor
is started and remains on until the vehicle is turned/shut off.
Start-up Displays:........................When the tractor is started, the display first performs a short system check,
indicated by the brief illumination of all three display icons. After the
system check, one of three displays will appear:
1. Ready to Couple..................This display indicates that the fifth wheel is in the proper position for
coupling. There is not a kingpin in the fifth wheel lock and the fifth wheel

in the “Fifth Wheel Operating Instructions” that came with your fifth
wheel.
Also, if you will be traveling without a trailer, this display will remain lit for
oximately 17 minutes before turning off. The display will turn back on
appr
during the next coupling process, or the next time it is turned on.
This display indicates that the fifth wheel is pr
kingpin. The kingpin is in the lock at the proper height and the lock
mechanism is fully closed in the locked position. Pr
inspection. The display will remain lit for approximately 81/2 minutes
before turning off.
NOTE: Although the display turns off, the ELI is still functioning normally
and monitoring the fifth wheel coupling. The display will activate if an

Improper couple. Review
coupling procedures and repeat
coupling attempt.*
Error appears on tractor
startup. ELI senses that the
locks are closed, but does not

Check kingpin sensor and/or lock sensor
and fifth wheel throat. Kingpin sensor
may be bad, or too far from the kingpin.
L

of metal near the lock sensor.**
Error appears on tractor startup.
ELI senses the kingpin, but
does not sense that the locks

Check lock sensor and/or kingpin
sensor and fifth wheel throat. Locks
may not be engaging properly, or are
out of adjustment. Kingpin sensor
may be sensing something else. Lock
sensor may not be sensing properly.**
Check the kingpin sensor and for
improper couple.**
Error appears after two or more
coupling attempts. ELI did not
sense the kingpin before the
locks closed.*
Check the lock sensor and for
binding in the lock mechanism.**
Check the kingpin sensor and for
presence of the kingpin.**
Check the lock sensor.
The handle is pulled as part of
normal uncoupling procedure.**
ELI sensed the kingpin, but did not
sense the locks closing within 1
second of the kingpin engaging the
locks. Service fifth wheel.*
ELI senses that the kingpin has been
missing for more than five seconds.
Check kingpin position.*
ELI senses that the lock is open
and the kingpin is still present.
This appears when the handle is
pulled as part of a normal
uncoupling procedure.*
Error appears on tractor startup.
ELI senses a proper couple, but
remembers it wasn’t properly
coupled the last time it was
s
hut down.*
Check the kingpin and/or the lock
sensor. Check for binding in the
lock mechanism.**
Check the kingpin sensor and for
presence of the kingpin.**
Error appears after two or more
coupling attempts. ELI sensed the
kingpin come in, but lost the
kingpin when the locks closed.*
IMPORTANT: Follow the steps in the procedure below if an error code
and/or redlight appears while operating the vehicle.
PROCEDURE
