About This Publication

This publication provides instructions to mount the cooling fan accessory on these motors.

MPL-B980E-MJ24AA MPL-B980E-MJ74AA
Cooling is optimized by a setback at the front of the motor that makes sure the airflow is unrestricted.
Use this document with the MP-Series Low Inertia Servo Motor with 215 mm or Larger Frame Size Installation Instructions, publication MP-IN002

Contents of the Kit

The fan kit contains a metal shroud with a cooling fan, and a hex-head cap screw. The cap screw is sized to fit the eyebolt hole on the front of the motor.
You must supply the copper power cable with a 75 °C (167 °F) minimum rating. Phasing of main AC power is arbitrary and an earth ground connection is required for safe and proper operation.
.
The National Electrical Code and local electrical codes take precedence over the values and methods provided.

TIP

Install the Fan Kit

Perform the following steps to install the fan kit on the specified MP-Series motors. The outline drawing on page
ATTENTION: To avoid personal injury, carefully remove the fan assembly from its metal shroud. Pay particular attention to the possibility of sharp edges on the sheet metal.
1. Separate the cooling fan into two parts: the fan assembly and the motor shroud.
The motor shroud is a sheet metal structure for directing the flow of cooling air around the motor housing. The fan assembly is integrated into the shroud, and forces the cooling air through the motor shroud and across the motor housing.
a. Remove the six screws fastening the fan assembly to the shroud.
There are two screws on each side, and two screws on the top of the shroud.
b. Carefully slide the fan assembly from the sheet metal shroud.
SHOCK HAZARD: To avoid the hazard of an electrical shock, perform all mounting and wiring of the fan kit prior to applying power. Once power is applied, connector terminals may have voltage present even when not in use.

2. Wire input power to the fan assembly.
a. Insert the fan power cable, or discrete power and ground wires, through the
grommeted hole in the back of the fan assembly.
b. Connect 230V AC input power and ground to the terminals on the fan assembly.
Refer to the exploded view on page and ground.
3. Install the shroud on the motor.
This step is easier to complete by raising the motor so it rests on its faceplate.
The fan kit may be attached to a machine-mounted motor by removing the cross brace panel at the front of the shroud. Removal of the cross brace panel lets you pass the shroud around the motor connectors. However, reinstalling the cross brace may be difficult in a confined space.
a. Remove both eyebolts from the motor.
The front eyebolt will be replaced by the hex-head cap screw included in the kit.
b. Slide the motor shroud onto the motor.
