IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Some of the following information may not apply to your particular product; however, as with any electronic product, precautions should be observed during handling and use.
• Before using the product, please follow and adhere to all warnings, safety and operating instructions located on the product and in the user book. Save all instructions for future reference.
• Do not expose product to rain and do not use near water; such as, sink, wet basement, swimming pools, etc.
•Always leave sufficient space around the product for ventilation. Do not place product in or on a bed, rug, bookcase or cabinet that may prevent air flow through vent openings.
• Do not expose product to extreme temperatures such as found near a hot radiator or stove, or in a car parked in the Summer sun.
• Connect power cord only to AC power source as marked on the product.
• Some products employ a polarized AC line plug (one blade is wider). This is a safety feature. The plug will go in the power outlet only one way. If the plug doesn’t go into the outlet completely, turn the plug over and put it in the other way. If it still doesn’t fit, contact a qualified electrician to change the outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.
• Route power cord to prevent it from being pinched, or walked on, or melted by a hot stove or radiator.
•To clean cabinet, unplug AC power cord, then use a soft cloth dampened only with water.
• Do not place lighted candles, cigarettes, cigars, etc. on the product.
• Unplug AC power cord from outlet during a lightning storm or when product is left unused for a long period of time to prevent damage due to lightning or power line surges.
• Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids do not spill into the product.
• Never add accessories that the product has not been designed to accommodate.
• Use only the manufacturer’s approved mounting instructions and hardware when installing product.
• Do not attempt to disassemble the cabinet. This product does not contain customer serviceable components.
• Do not handle the unit or power cord when your hands are wet or damp.
• Carts and Stands — The appliance should be used only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer.
• An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn.
• Damage Requiring Service–This product should be serviced by qualified service personnel when: A. The power supply cord or the plug has been
damaged; or B. Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the product; or C. The product has been exposed to rain; or D. The product does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or E. The product has been dropped, or the cabinet damaged.
•When service or repairs are completed, ask the service technician to perform the safety check described in the service manual and to confirm that replacement parts have the same safety characteristics as the original parts.
• Overloading - Do not overload the wall outlets, extension cords or integral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
IF YOUR PRODUCT OPERATES ON BATTERIES, adhere to the following precautions: A. Any battery may leak electrolyte if mixed with a different battery type, if inserted incorrectly, or if all batteries are not replaced at the same time. B. Any battery may leak electrolyte or explode if disposed of in fire or an attempt is made to charge a battery not intended to be recharged. C. Discard leaky batteries immediately. Leaking batteries can cause skin burns or other personal injury.When discarding batteries, be sure to dispose of them in the proper manner, according to provincial and local regulations.
IF YOUR PRODUCT IS EQUIPPED WITH ANTENNA TERMINALS, and if an outdoor antenna is connected, be sure the system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surge and built-up static charges. An outdoor antenna should be locate away from power lines.
IF PRODUCT IS TO BE CONNECTED TO A CATV SYSTEM, call the CATV system installer’s attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical.
Important information
For your safety
The AC power plug is polarized (one blade is wider than the other) and only fits into AC power outlets one way. If the plug will not go into the outlet completely, turn the plug over and try to insert it the other way. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to change the outlet, or use a different one. Do not attempt to bypass this safety feature.

Important information
Safety precautions
• Never open the cabinet under any circumstances. Any repairs or internal adjustments should be made only by a trained technician.
• Never operate this product with the cabinet removed.
• Do not use your System immediately after transporting it from a cold place to a warm place, as condensation may cause the system to malfunction.
• Keep your unit away from humid areas and abnormally hot places.
• Do not touch the player with wet hands. If any liquid enters the player cabinet, take the player to a trained technician for inspection.
• This compact disc player uses a laser to read the music on the disc. The laser mechanism corresponds to the cartridge and stylus of a record player. Although this product incorporates a laser pick-up lens, it is completely safe when operated according to directions.
• Discs rotate at high speed inside the player. Do not use damaged, warped, or cracked discs.
• Do not touch the pick-up lens which is located inside the disc compartment. To keep dust from collecting on the pick-up lens, do not leave the compartment door open for an extended period of time. If the lens becomes dirty, clean it with a soft brush, or use an air blower brush designed for camera lenses.
• The apparatus should not be exposed to dripping or splashing and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should be placed on the apparatus.
• No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the apparatus.
• Attention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of battery disposal.
• Minimum distances should be kept around the apparatus for sufficient ventilation.
• The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation opening with items, such as newspaper, table-cloths, curtains, etc.
• The rating plate is located at the bottom cabinet of apparatus.
Important information
Headset safety
• Have a Blast-Just Not in your eardrums! Make sure you turn down the volume on the unit before you put on headphones. Increase the volume to the desired level only after headphone are in place.
• Do not play your headset at high volume. Hearing experts warn against extended high-volume play.
• If you experience ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
•You should use with extreme caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
• Even if your headset is an open-air designed to let you to hear outside sounds, do not turn up the volume so high that you are unable to hear what is around you.
Handling CDs
• Do not touch the signal surfaces. Hold CDs by the edges, or by one edge and the hole.
• Do not affix labels or adhesive tapes to the label surfaces. Do not scratch or damage the label.
• CDs rotate at high speeds inside the player. Do not use damaged (cracked or warped) CDs
• Make sure CDs are stored in their original case after use. Keep them away from damp, humid or abnormally heated places.
Radio
TV band
CH 2-13 are available for TV Band. The channel number lights on the display when TV band is selected. Press TRACK/ TUNE or to select the station.

Weather band
Weather information is given continuously from U.S. Government Weather Stations on frequencies from 162.400MHz to
162.550MHz.
The Wx indicator and the channel number lights on the display when weather band is selected. Press TRACK/TUNE or to select the station.

CD lens care
• When your CD lens gets dirty it can also cause the system to output poor sound quality. To clean the lens you will need to purchase a CD lens cleaner which can maintain the output sound quality of your system. For instructions on cleaning the CD lens, refer to the ones accompanying the lens cleaner.
Cleaning the exterior
• Disconnect the system from AC power before cleaning the exterior of the unit with a soft dust cloth
• Clean the exterior with a soft clean cloth or slightly moistened chamois leather. DO NOT use solvents as it may cause damage to the unit.
Cassettes
•To protect your recordings from accidental erasure on one or both sides of your cassette, snap out the tab at the top of the cassette. If you decide later to record on the tape, seal the hole with a piece of adhesive tape. (Refer to diagram)
• Quit Slacking - A little bit of slack in your tapes can cause scratches on the tape, or worse yet, the tape could break. If you notice some slack in the tape, use a pencil to tighten it up before you insert it.
The Weather transmission, broadcast 24 hours a day, are taped messages that are repeated every 4 to 6 minutes and revised and updated as needed to match the changing weather conditions. For additional information, check your location office of the National Weather Service (Department of Commerce).
Important: The listening range of NOAA weather stations varies from 10 miles up to a maximum of 40 miles from the station’s transmitter. In some areas of the United States, weather transmissions cannot be monitored. The effective range of this radio will have side variations due to the height of the local transmitting antenna, atmospheric conditions, and the terrain between the transmitter and your radio’s location.

Before you begin
AC power
Plug the power supply cord into the AC power jack on the back of the unit, and into an AC power supply outlet that accepts the plug supplied with your unit.
Battery power
You can insert 6 D-sized alkaline batteries (not supplied) and you can take your stereo just about anywhere. 3 “AA” batteries (not supplied) are needed to keep radio station memory.
• Open the battery compartment door on the bottom of the unit by pressing down on the tab and pulling out the cover.
• Before inserting the batteries, observe the polarities (that is, + and -) of the battery, then relate the polarities to the engraved diagram located on the battery compartment door. Insert batteries in the battery compartment.
Note that the AC line cord must be unplugged from the jack on the back of the unit to operate on batteries.

• Be sure to remove batteries when storing the set for more than 30 days. Leaky batteries can badly damage the system. Be sure to dispose of leaky, weak or dead batteries properly according to federal, state, and local regulations. To prevent injury or damage, do not reverse batteries and do not mix battery type.
General controls
ON/STANDBY / RADIO / TAPE / CD
To turn the unit on/ off and to select among the radio, tape, CD and off (standby) mode. BAND To select the radio, TV or weather band. EQ To select among the sound effects (Flat / Rock / Jazz / Pop / Classic). DBBS To turn the digital bass boost system on and off. VOLUME + / - To increase or decrease the output volume.
To connect the headphone. PLAY MODE In the radio mode, to access
the preset radio channels. In CD mode, to select among the playback modes (repeat all / repeat 1 / random). SET In the radio mode, to select the radio preset channels and to set preset stations automatically. In the CD mode, to enter the program mode. TRACK / TUNE / In the radio mode, to tune up or down the radio frequency and select the TV or weather channels. In the CD mode, to search/skip the CD track backward or forward.
Tape player CD playback
Playing tape
1. When the unit is off, press ON STANDBY / RADIO / TAPE / CD twice until TAPE mode is selected. The tape indicator “tAPE” lights on the display.
2. Press STOP/EJECT to open the tape deck door.
3. Insert a tape into the door and push the door closed.
4. Press REW or FWD to wind the tape to the desired starting position. Press STOP/ EJECT to stop winding.
5. Press PLAY to start playback. Press PAUSE to pause playback (press again to release the button to resume playback).
6. Press STOP/EJECT to stop the playback.
Be sure to slide the cassette into the tape slot on the door. Do not place the tape directly onto
the tape mechanism.
Recording to tape
From radio
1. Insert a tape into the deck.
2. Press ON/STANDBY / RADIO / TAPE / CD until the RADIO mode is selected.
3. Press BAND to access the desired radio band.
4. Press TRACK/TUNE or to tune to the station to be recorded.
5. Press REC and PLAY together to begin recording.
6. Press PAUSE or STOP to pause or stop the recording respectively.
From CD
1. Insert a tape into the deck.
2. Press ON/STANDBY / RADIO / TAPE / CD until the CD mode is selected.
3. Insert the disc to be recorded.
4. Select the track or program to be recorded.
5. Press REC and PLAY together to begin recording.
6. Play the track or program to be recorded.
7. Press PAUSE or STOP to pause or stop recording respectively.
For better recording quality, use normal bias tape (Type I) only.
CD-R / RW
•To avoid damages to the CD-R/RW
• Playback capability for CD-RW discs
Selecting CD mode
When the unit is turned off, press ON/ STANDBY / RADIO / TAPE / CD three times to enter the CD mode.
Loading disc
1. Press the CD OPEN button to slide disc tray out.
2. Place a disc on the disc tray with the label side facing up.
3. Push the disc tray back in.
The total number of tracks on the disc can be read from the display.
This unit is compatible with audio CD-R/RW discs.
• Do not affix any type of labels to either side (recordable
or labeled side) of a CD-R/RW disc as this may result in the unit malfunctioning.

Playback

• Press and hold TRACK/TUNE or to search quickly the current track backward or forward respectively.
3. Press STOP to stop the playback.
CD remain
Press REMAIN to select between showing the disc remaining playback time and track elapsed playback time.
Programming
1. In stop mode, press SET to enter the program setting mode. The program location shows briefly and then the track number and program icon flash on the display.
2. Press TRACK/TUNE or to select the track you want to program.
3. Press SET again to confirm your selection and access the next program location.
4. Repeat steps 2 to 3 to program to a maximum of 20 tracks.
5. Press PLAY/PAUSE in program mode to start program playback (PROGRAM indicator lights on the display). Press STOP to return to normal playback mode.

Select radio mode
When the unit is turned off, press STANDBY/ON / RADIO / TAPE / CD once to select the radio mode.

Program mode will be deactivated once you press STOP to end program playback.
Clearing program list
Your program will be erased once you open the disc compartment door or change to another source mode (e.g. radio).
Troubleshooting tips
System doesn’t turn on
• Unplug the unit for a moment, and then plug it back in.
• Check the outlet by plugging in another device
No sound
• Adjust volume setting.
• Make sure you’ve selected the correct function
Poor radio reception
• Adjust the antenna for better reception
•Try turning off electrical appliances near the unit, such as hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, or fluorescent lights
CD doesn’t play
• Make sure you’ve put a CD in the tray
• Make sure the CD’s label is facing up
•Try another CD

8. TV/Wx/FM/AM Radio band
Extend or reposition the antenna for better FM/TV/Wx reception. Rotate the unit for
better AM reception.
If you are in the normal playback mode but want to play the saved program, press STOP, then SET and then PLAY/PAUSE.
Play mode
Press PLAYMODE to select among the playback modes (repeat all / repeat current track / random). Selection made is indicated by icons on the display.
• Make sure that Pause mode is not activated
• Make sure CD function is selected
CD sound skips
• Clean the CD (as explained in “Maintenance”)
• Check CD for warping, scratches, or other damage
ESD remark:
In case of misfunction due to electrostatic discharge just reset the product (disconnect and reconnect of the power source may be required) to resume normal operation.
Tuning to a station
• Press TRACK/TUNE to tune down the radio frequency.
• Press TRACK/TUNE to tune up the radio frequency.
Setting preset stations manually
1. In the radio mode, press BAND to select the radio band.
2. Press TRACK/TUNE or to select the station to save as a preset station.
3. Press SET. Program icon flashes.
4. Press PLAYMODE repeatedly to assign the preset station number.
5. Press SET to confirm. Program icon stops flashing
6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 to set additional preset stations. There are 10 preset locations for FM band and 10 preset location for AM band on this unit.
U.S. Limited Warranty
What your warranty covers:
• Defects in materials or workmanship.
For how long after your purchase:
• 90 days from date of purchase - unit exchange, which includes parts and labor. 91 days to 1 year from date of purchase ­unit exchange, which includes parts only; you pay the labor.
What we will do:
•Provide you with a new, or at our option, a refurbished unit. The exchange unit is under warranty for the remainder of the original product’s warranty period.
•Proof of purchase in the form of a bill of sale or receipted invoice which is evidence that the product is within the warranty period must be presented to obtain warranty service. For rental firms, proof of first rental is also required.
How to make a warranty claim:
•Properly pack your unit. Include any cables, etc., which were originally provided with the product. We recommend using the original carton and packing materials.
•Include evidence of purchase date such as the bill of sale. Also print your name and address and a description of the defect. Send via standard UPS or its equivalent to:

•Insure your shipment for of loss or damage. Thomson accepts no liability in case of damage or loss en route to Thomson.
• Pay any charges billed to you by the Exchange Center for service not covered by the warranty.
•A new or refurbished unit will be shipped to you freight prepaid.
What your warranty does not cover:
• Customer instruction. (Your Owner’s Manual provides information regarding operating Instructions and user controls. For additional information, ask your dealer.)
•Installation and set-up service adjustments.
• Batteries.
• Damage from misuse or neglect.
•Products which have been modified or incorporated into other products.
•Products purchased or serviced outside the USA.
Press and hold TRACK/TUNE
or to automatically tune to the next available station.
Setting preset stations automatically
Press and hold SET to set presets automatically. Once a station is found the search stops briefly to allow you to listen to the station.
• Press TRACK/TUNE or at this time if you decide not to store the selected station.
• If you decide to store the station in preset memory, wait a few seconds and the search will resume.
Using presets
1. Press BAND to select between bands.
2. Press PLAYMODE to enter the preset mode and PRESET 1 shows on the display.
3. Press PLAYMODE repeatedly to access the desired preset stations.
•Acts of nature, such as but not limited to lightning damage.
Product Registration:
•Please complete and mail the Product registration Card packed with your unit. It will make it easier to contact you should it ever be necessary. The return of the card is not required for warranty coverage.
Limitation of Warranty:
• THE WARRANTY STATED ABOVE IS THE ONLY WARRANTY APPLICABLE TO THIS PRODUCT. ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED (INCLUDING ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE) ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED. NO VERBAL OR WRITTEN INFORMATION GIVEN BY THOMSON INC., ITS AGENTS OR EMPLOYEES SHALL CREATE A GUARANTY OR IN ANY WAY INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THIS WARRANTY.
• REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT AS PROVIDED UNDER THIS WARRANTY IS THE EXCLUSIVE REMEDY OF THE CONSUMER. THOMSON INC.
