Room Control. The SSE 22 provides
exact equalization controls for use in correcting
room response problems—a critical step in
recreating the home theater listening experience.
All rooms differ, and all rooms display
acoustical problems of some sort. These
anomalies distract from the enjoyment of the
true home theater experience. Recording
studios equalize their playback, and the same
procedure at home yields an uncolored,
transparent sound, as heard in the studio. The
SSE 22 is also one of the quietest equalizers
available at any price. After alignment,
pressing the BYPASS switch reveals the
before and after. The clarity is obvious.
Surround Equalization. The same
combination of graphic and parametric
equalization that is so successful in the THX 44
equalizer is duplicated in the SSE 22. Now all
channels can deliver even room response, the
goal in 5.1 digital systems.
In-Wall Speaker Equalization. In-wall
speakers often carry a reputation for not
sounding as good as free-standing ones. The
SSE 22 can greatly improve the response of
in-walls by removing the peaks causing that
“boxy” sound. The SSE 22 can compensate for
various wall construction techniques, allowing
the different channels, free-standing or other
in-walls, to match room response better for a
more transparent sound.
Remote Speaker Equalization. Anywhere in the home where remote speakers are
used, regardless of brand or type, equalization
makes a difference between sounding good
and sounding great.
Graphic and Parametric. The left and
right channels feature an 11-band 1/3-octave
graphic section for low frequency corrections,
plus a 2-band parametric equalizer for high
frequencies. The SSE 22 delivers ±6 dB of
correction where needed. The parametric
bands can provide the broad frequency control
occasionally needed in the top end, or notch
out a problem frequency peak.
Setup and Alignment. The SSE 22
installs between the preamp/controller and the
power amplifiers. Setting the rear channel
controls to THX standards requires the
temporary use of a 1/3 octave analyzer with
averaging. As for the front channels, consult
the “Home THX Audio System Room
Equalization Manual” available from the
Lucasfilm THX Division or Rane.
Once set-up, all controls are hidden away
behind the
power supply and attachable 19" rack
mounting ears are also provided.
