FCC INFORMATION
We have designed your System 997/998 to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each Caller ID system (an d each device, such as a tel ephone or answering machine) that you connect to the telephone line draws power from the line. We refer to this power draw as the system’s
equivalence number
bottom of your phone. If you use more than one phone or other device
on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might i mp air ringer operation. If ringer operation is impaired, remove one of the devices from the line. 8
or REN. The REN is on the

Your system com plies with Part 68 of
FCC Rules
You must, upon request, provide the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) registration number and the REN to your phone company. These numbers are on the label on the bottom of the system.
Note: You must not connect your System 997/ 998 to:
• coin-operated systems
• party-li ne systems
• most electroni c key telephone syst em s
This system complies with the limits for a Class B digital device as specified in Part 15 of

against radio and TV interference in a residential area. However, your System 997/998 might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating prop erly. To eliminate inter ference, you can try one or more of the following corrective measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving radio or TV antenna.
• Increase the distance between the System 997/998 and the radio or TV.
• Use outlets on different electrical circuits for the System 997/998 and the radio or TV.
Contact your local RadioShack store if the problem continues.

PREPARATION
INSTALLING BATTERIES
You need four AAA batteries (not supplied) to power the System 997/998. For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-555.
Cautions
12
:
• Always use fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
43-997 .fm Page 13 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. If you are replacing old batteries, disconnect both modular line cords from the System 997/998.
2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw in the battery cover on the bottom of the system, then slide the cover off.
13
43-997 .fm Page 14 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
3. Put four fresh AAA batteries into the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and –) marked inside.
4. Replace the cover and secure it with the screw. If you are replacing the batteries, reconnect the modular li ne cords.
Replace the batteries when flashes on the dis-
LO
play or the display dims. 14
43-997 .fm Page 15 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
Note: If the battery is out of the System 997/998 for more than about a minute, the time and date will be lost (but be reset when you receive the next call). The Caller ID records, however, remain in the sys tem ’s memory.
Cautions:
• Always remove old or weak batteries. Batteries can leak chemical s that can damage your system.
• Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury them.

The System 997/998 displays this information and updates the system’s clock. (You cannot manually set the date and time.)

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your RadioShack System 997/998 45-Memory Caller ID is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for your system so you can enjoy it for year s.
Keep the system dry. If it gets wet , wipe it dry immedi ately. Liquids might contain minerals t hat can corr ode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the system only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and disto rt or melt plastic parts.
30
43-997 .fm Page 31 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
Keep the system away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts.
Handle the syste m g ently and careful ly. Dropping it can damage circuit boards and cases and can cause the system to work improperly.
Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type. Batteries can leak chemicals that damage your system’s electronic parts.
Wipe the system with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the system.
31
43-997 .fm Page 32 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
Modifying or tampering with the system’s internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate your system’s warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it. If your system is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance. If the trouble is affectin g the telephone lines, the phone company can ask you to disconnect your system until you have resolved the problem.
32
43-997 .fm Page 33 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
In the unlikely event that your System 997/998 causes problems on the telephone line, the telephone company can disconnect your service. The telephone company normally attempts to notify you in advance. If advance notice is not practical, the telephone company notifies you as soon as possible and advises you of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.
Also, the telephone company can make changes to its lines, equipment, operations, or procedures that could affect the operation of this device. The telephone company noti fi es you of t hese changes
33
43-997 .fm Page 34 Tue sday, August 17, 1999 8:18 AM
in advance so you can take the necessary steps to prevent interruption of your telephone service.
LIGHTNING
Your system has built-in protection circuits to reduce the risk of damage from surges in telephon e and power line current. These protection circuits meet or exceed the FCC requirements. However, lightning striking the t elephone or power lines can damage your system.
Lightning damage is not common. Nevertheless, if you live in an area that has severe electrical storms, we suggest that you unplug the telephone system during storms to reduce the possibility of damage.
