PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
1 System Requirements
The following hardware and software is basically required:
1. PC with Intel Pentium processor or any compatible processor,
2. A CDROM drive for installation,
3. Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or above, Win
dows 2003, or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or above,
4. For detailed requirements concerning CPU, RAM, and hard disks,
please refer to the actual values listed in the README.TXT file on
your installation medium.
Please note:
Running other recording software in parallel to PoINT
Publisher may cause initialisation and recording er
rors. In some cases, other recording software replaces
standard system components by incompatible versions
at installation time. This may cause permanent failures
of PoINT Publisher.
2 Installation
Before You Install
Please read the file README.TXT on your installation media first. It
contains important information about system requirements, installa
tion, restrictions, and additional features of the current version of
”PoINT Publisher”.
The following installation sequence is recommended:
First connect the autoloader to your PC and, if the loader supports
printing, install the device drivers for the disc printer. This proce
dure is described in the documentation delivered with your hard
ware.
5. Install ”PoINT Publisher”, preferably on a local hard disk drive.

PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
The Installation Process
The PoINT Publisher installation CD includes an interactive installa
tion program that installs all components of PoINT Publisher.
Your login must have Administrator rights to run the setup program.
1. Insert the CD in your CDROM drive.
If the setup program does not start automatically, perform the follow
ing steps:
2. Click on ‘Start’ and then on ‘Run’.
3. Type the following command in the Command Line box (replace
‘Drive’ with the drive letter of your CDROM drive):
Drive:\SETUP <Enter>
The welcome screen of the installation program appears.
4. Click ‘Install’ and follow the screen prompts to continue the instal
lation.
The installation process offers two options:
Server Installation
Client Installation
The server installation is required on the computer to which the auto
loader is connected.
The client installation can be done on any other computer in the net
work. However, usage of a client installation and the number of clients
that can be used together with a “PoINT Publisher” server depends on
the purchased license. For more information about licensing please re
fer to section 3.
Most recent information about requirements, supported hardware, and
installation can be found in the “readme” files on the installation me
dia.
3 Device Configuration
Starting ”PoINT Publisher - Server”
1. Click on the ‘Start’ button to open the start menu.
2. Click on ‘Programs’ and then on PoINT Publisher. This opens the
program group of PoINT Publisher and shows the installed com
ponents.
6
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
3. In the PoINT Publisher program group, click on ”PoINT Publisher
Server”. This starts the program.
Entering a License Key
As long you have not entered a License Key, ”PoINT Publisher
Server” will display a message box after starting the program, which
indicates that an valid License Key has not been entered. The software
will run without a License Key for 7 days with all functions and fea
tures being enabled. Please refer to chapter 4 for information on how
to get and how to enter the License Key.
If after 7 days no valid License Key has been entered PoINT Publisher
changes the functionality to the demonstration mode which means
that the program can be started but recording of discs is disabled.
Configuring PoINT Publisher - Server
When you run “PoINT Publisher Server” the first time after installa
tion you have to configure the software. Later on you may alter the
configuration whenever this is necessary. PoINT Publisher stores and
uses the current configuration until you change it.
You may open the ‘Device Configuration’ dialogue by command ‘Set
tings’ of the ‘Configuration’ menu. When you start ”PoINT Publisher
Server” for the first time, the dialogues are displayed automatically.
1. Setup the connected hardware.
2. Select recording speed and simulation mode (if required).
Additional settings can be done in the ‘General’, ‘Defaults’ and ‘Auto
loader’ dialogues.
In Windows 2000/XP/2003 PoINT Publisher will automatically disable
the ‘Autorun’ function. You have to reboot the system to make the
changes effective.
The ‘Autorun’ function is disabled in order to prevent Windows from
starting recorded CDs automatically before they are unloaded from
the recorders. Additional information can be found in the Online
Help of PoINT Publisher.
Setting up the connected Hardware
To open the setup dialogues, click on the ‘Setup’ button in the ‘Device
Configuration’ dialogue.
7
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
If several autoloaders are supported, a selection dialogue will appear
from which the installed type of autoloader can be chosen. Press ‘OK’
to confirm the selection. Then the autoloader specific setup dialogue
will appear.
8
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
It displays the current settings. The layout of the dialogue may vary
depending on the functionality of your specific hardware. For exam
ple, some loaders do not use a serial port, others don’t provide printing
support.
First you should define port and printer driver. Then you may specify
your drives. To do that, select the number of groups (if applicable),
click on the exact position of the drive (if applicable), and click on the
‘Add’ button and select a drive from the opening list. Please note that
”PoINT Publisher” needs to know the exact position of drives in some
loaders.
Finally confirm your choice by clicking on ‘OK’. This will return to
the ‘Settings’ dialogue which shows the configured drives. The ‘Test’
button should now finally be pressed to check the current settings.
The tests include checking the serial port, the communication with
the loader, and the existence of the selected drives(s). During the tests
a disc will be loaded to and unloaded from all configured drives. This
test must complete without errors. Otherwise ”PoINT Publisher” will
not work properly.
9
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
If you have setup an autoloader (not a CDR Tower) you will find this
page in the ‘Settings’ dialogue.
In order to avoid wasting discs by a malfunctioning recorder, you can
instruct ”PoINT Publisher” to disable it after a certain number of fail
ures that occurred in a row with this device. In case that a recorder is
disabled, processing continues with the remaining recorders. Disabled
recorders are automatically reenabled when you start the next pro
duction cycle. This option is not available in manually loaded tower
versions.
If you want to permanently disable a malfunctioning recorder, remove
it from the configuration in the hardware Setup dialogue.
For autoloaders with a disc printer and a rotation function the next op
tion is available. Jobs that require disc rotation to a marker before
printing will be excluded from further processing when a certain limit
of rotator errors occurred. Usually rotator errors are caused by discs
that have no marker.

4 Licensing
The functionality of PoINT Publisher is controlled by a computer de
pended License Key mechanism. The License Key enables the li
censed functionality (e.g. supported autoloader, options) of PoINT
Publisher.
In case that a License Key is not part of the delivery of PoINT Pub
lisher, you may find information on how to obtain the License Key in
the separate ‘Licensing Instructions’.
The License Key can be entered in the ‘License Key’ dialogue by the
command ‘License Settings’ of the ‘Configuration’ menu. This dialogue
may also be used to find out which options and extensions are enabled
by your current license key.
11
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
Stand-alone Configuration
In a standalone (server only) configuration, the PoINT Publisher ap
plications, the licensed options and extensions are only available on
the server system.
Client/Server Configuration
The setup process of PoINT Publisher allows to install the client com
ponent of PoINT Publisher on other computers in the network. To
support these client installations of PoINT Publisher a License Key is
required which includes the Clients Options which enables cli
ent/server operation.
In a client/server configuration, you need one additional license for
each client. In this context, a client is identified by the user's login
name and the corresponding computer name. A client license is a
“floating license” which is not bound to a specific user, or computer.
If a client wants to establish a connection to a server, an unused client
license is needed. A list of all users with an assigned client license can
be displayed in the PoINT Publisher Server under menu ‘View’, ‘Con
nected Clients’. A connected client can add jobs and modify the job
list (in respect to his user rights) or start a PoINT Publisher applica
tion. The client license is marked as used as long as the client is con
nected to the server or one of the user’s jobs in the job list is not fin
ished.
In the column titled 'Queued by' of the main PoINT Publisher win
dow the name of the user who has added the job is displayed.
5 Concept and Usage
PoINT Publisher consists of the components ”PoINT Publisher
Server”, ”PoINT Publisher Client”, ” Image Builder”, ”Copy Builder”,
”CDaudio Builder” and "PoINT Event Controlled Recording" (ECR).
The builders are used to prepare and to create Disc Images. A Disc
Image is a file containing all information (layout and data) that define
the content of a disc as well as specifications like the number of copies
that shall be made and the label that shall be printed to the disc.
”Image Builder” supports the creation of Disc Images from file and di
rectory trees, ”Copy Builder” copies existing discs to a Disc Image, and
”CDaudio Builder” assists you in mastering digital audio CDs.
12
PoINT Publisher: Getting Started
”PoINT Publisher Server” maintains a list of jobs. By adding Disc Im
ages to it, the user creates jobs. ”PoINT Publisher Server” takes these
jobs (Disc Images) as input and writes discs according to the specifica
tions. To achieve highest productivity, ”PoINT Publisher Server”
processes multiple Images and writes to multiple recorder drives at a
time if possible.
”PoINT Publisher Client” is similar to ”PoINT Publisher Server”. It
allows to view and manipulate the job list of ”PoINT Publisher
Server” from remote computers.
"PoINT ECR" is intended as a tool for simplifying and automating the
production of discs in a network environment without the need of
PoINT Publisher applications (e.g. Image Builder). "PoINT ECR" of
fers network shares to which data can be copied. According to certain
configurable conditions "PoINT ECR" will instruct ”PoINT Publisher –
Server" to produce the discs.
"PoINT Label Editor" allows you to easily create and edit label files for
discs. These can be used with jobs of PoINT Publisher to automate la
bel printing during disc production.
The Batch Interface (SDK) is an optional extension to the interactive
versions of ”PoINT Publisher” and ”Image Builder”.
The Batch Interface adds batch processing functionality to ”PoINT
Publisher”, so that definitions including imprint file, number of copies
and order of jobs for ”PoINT Publisher” can be controlled by external
programs.
Batch processing is controlled by ‘
number of statements which are stored in an ASCII text file. PoINT
Publisher takes ‘joblists’ as command line argument and automati
cally starts to execute the described jobs. An arbitrary number of ‘
can be active at a time and in parallel.
