WELCOME
This Quick Start Guide provides installation instructions for your CD-ReWriter with a stan­dard computer setup. Basic installation consists of the following steps: Setting the Jumpers;
Installing the IDE Drive; and Installing the Software.
For details on product safety, registration, war­ranty, and service, refer to the other literature included with your CD-ReWriter. Refer to the separate owner’s manual for basic operation, troubleshooting, and specifications. Keep all these materials available for future reference.
Unless you are using an IBM/AT compatible computer, all internal drives in this series will not be compatible with your system.

BEFORE STARTING
Before using your Philips CD-ReWriter, make sure you have all the items listed on page 3. In order to use your Philips CD-ReWriter, you will need the following personal computer (PC) spec­ifications and tools.
Computer
Requirements
• An IBM/AT compatible computer with a 233 MHz or faster Pentium Processor and 32 Mb of RAM
• A vacant IDE interface connector
• A vacant half-height bay
• Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT
4.0 or higher
• Sufficient free hard disk space (at least 12 Mb) You will need about twice as much space on your hard disk as that required by the data you wish to write to CD. (For example: If the data you wish to write to CD is 10 Mb, you will need 20 Mb free space on your hard disk.)
• Remove any existing CD recording software from your PC before installing the CD-ReWriter.
Discs
You may use conventional CD-RW (74 minutes) and CD-R (74 minutes) discs with your Philips CD-ReWriter. Philips recommends you use only Philips CD-RW (74 minutes) and CD-R (74 min­utes) discs. For the best recordings, make sure the discs are rated for use with 8x drives.
Read-only Discs
You can use discs which conform to the Compact Disc Read Only Memory standard. If you wish to use the audio functions, use discs that have the logo that indicates the disc conforms to the Compact Disc Digital Audio standard.

• Cruciform screwdriver: Use to remove the cover of your computer and to install your CD­ReWriter.
• Long nose pliers: Use to insert or remove the jumper pin when setting the MASTER/SLAVE settings of your CD-ReWriter.

PREP ARING YOUR COMPUTER
Before making any adjustments to your system, check the following on your PC.
Disconnect other CD-ReWriters and remove their software. Use the software’s “Uninstall”
tool or utility. Or, select “Add/Remove Programs” from the Control Panel in Windows.
Make sure your computer is in 32-bit mode.
1. Right click on “My Computer.”
2. Left click on “Properties.” The “System Properties” screen will open.
3. Select “Performance.” “PC Cards (PCMCIA)” will appear near the middle of the screen. Also, “32-bit” should appear at the right side of the screen, along with the message “Your system is configured for optimal performance.” If these messages do not appear, you may see a message regarding “MS-DOS compatibility mode.” Contact your PC manufacturer or Windows technical support for assistance.
If your PC has more than 32 MB of RAM, change the file system setting to “Network Server.”
1. Right click on “My Computer.”
2. Left click on “Properties.”
3. Select “Performance.”
4. Under “Advanced Settings,” select “File System.”
5. Select “Hard Disk.”
6. In “Settings,” set “Typical role of this comput­er” to “Network Server.”
7. Select “Apply,” then “OK,” and “OK” again.
8. Restart your computer.
