1 General Information
The Philips DECT I600 is a cordless system terminal for use
in conjunction with a communications system.
The Philips DECT I600 is suitable for use in office, in outdoor or in dusty environments. The handset offers the following special features:
■ SOS key for one touch emergency call or message
■ mandown sensor triggers emergency call automatically
■ complies with protection class IP54 (splash- and dust
proof)
Get to know your telephone equipment. You will discover
many new functions that simplify communication and organisation considerably.

2 Important Safety
Information
Only use this product in countries where the relevant authorities have authorised its operation.
This product complies with IP54 – according to IEC 529 /
EN 60 529.
Sensitive
Electronic
Environment
Any radio-based equipment can potentially cause interference
with other equipment and can be interfered from other equipment. This also applies for DECT equipment. However, due
to the very low transmission power level, interferences are unlikely. Research proves that operational DECT phones normally don't influence electronic equipment. However some
precautions must be taken into account for sensitive electronic
equipment e.g. sensitive laboratory equipment. When DECT
phones operate in very close range to sensitive electronic
equipment, incidental influence can appear. You are advised
not to place the DECT phone on or close (less then 10 cm) to
this kind of equipment, even in stand-by mode.
Power Supply The mains voltage of the adapter should match the local mains
voltage, this can be 110 V or 230 V. Check if both voltages do
match before installing the charger and adapter.
Safety
Precautions
Please observe the following notes on safety when setting up,
connecting and using the handset:
■ Do not open the handset or charger, this could expose you
to high voltages. Have all repairs carried out by authorized
service personnel.
■ Connect to approved accessories only.
■ Do not allow the handset and charger to come into contact
with water or chemicals.

■ Only use the plug-in AC adapter and battery type sup-
plied.
■ Do not use AC adapters which are visibly damaged
(cracked or broken housing) and keep the ventilation slits
on the plug-in AC adapters free.
WARNING!
Never touch the charger and the battery contacts with conductive objects such as keys, paper clips, rings or bracelets!
■ Do not use the handsets in vehicles or in hazardous loca-
tions.
■ This product contains magnetic material. Be aware that
small metallic objects may stick for example to the loudspeaker. This may deteriorate the audio quality and can be
harmful.
Usage Like all other cordless telephones, this handset uses radio sig-
nals which do not guarantee a connection set-up under all circumstances. Generally, you should therefore not rely exclusively on cordless telephones when making indispensable calls
(e.g. medical emergencies).

3 Installation
Installation Site Place the charging s tat ion on a flat, ev en surface. Do not place
the charging station or accessories near:
■ water, moisture or damp areas
■ heat sources, direct sunlight or inadequately ventilated ar-
eas
■ devices that produce strong magnetic fields, electrical
devices, fluorescent lamps, computers, radios, television
sets, fax machines and telephone terminals
■ areas where the equipment may be covered, penetrated by
fluids and where its ventilation is impaired
■ areas where there is excessive dust, and areas subject to vi-
bration, shock or extreme temperature fluctuations
■ Place and/or store the handset and accessories out of the
reach of small children.
Commissioning
your Handset
Your handset is only operational after the battery pack has
been charged. You can then use the handset to make and receive calls.
Please refer to the section Important Battery Information starting on page 11.
If your handset does not have the MEM card preinstalle d, you
also need to install the supplied MEM card in order to use the
handset. The MEM card saves important data, such as personal settings and the telephone book.

The MEM card tray is located under the battery pack on the
back of the handset. Make sure, the handset is switched off. To
remove the battery pack, place the handset with the display
downwards on a flat surface. Press the lever (1) and lift up the
battery pack at the same time (2).

the MEM card from its frame. Do not touch the metal contacts.

MEM card under the two small crescents a (1). Press the
MEM card downwards until the small tag b locks (2).

To operate the charging station you need a mains connection.
Check if the mains voltage does match the AC adapter mains
voltage.
Connect the cable of the adapter plug to the socket on the underside of the charging station, and then insert the adapter
plug into the mains socket.

4 Important Battery
Information
Use the battery pack only as directed. Nev er use a damaged or
flat battery pack.
Heat and cold reduce the performance and the lifetime of the
battery pack. A handset with either a hot or a cold battery pack
may not function temporarily, even when the battery pack is
fully charged.
Dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations.
Please make use of any recycling facilities available.
WARNING! Never throw a battery pack into a fire.
Charging and
Discharging
The battery pack can be charged and discharged hundreds of
times, but it will eventually be used up. When the operating
time (i. e. talk and stand-by time) has become noticeably
shorter than normal, the battery pack should be replaced.
In order to achieve long operating times, you should dis charge
the battery pack at intervals by not placing the handset in the
charging station and leaving it switched on until it switches itself off. Only use this method to discharge the battery pack.
Extreme fluctuations in temperature have an effect on the
charging capacity of the battery pack.

5 Charging the Batteries
Commissioning Charge the battery pack for approx. five to six hours before us-
ing your handset for the first time. This safety measure extends
the lifetime of your battery pack. The maximum performance
of the battery pack is only reached after three to five charging/
discharging cycles.
Place the handset in the charging station regularly in order to
reach the optimum battery charge.
It is absolutely essential that you only use the rechargeable battery pack authorised by the manufacturer. The manufacturer
does not accept any responsibility for malfunction or damage
when other types of rechargeable battery or normal batteries
are used.

Charging time: approx. 5 hours.
Talk time: up to 8 hours (fully charged).
Stand-by time: up to 100 hours (fully charged).
Note: Batteries with an unknown charging status are fully
charged in approx. 14 hours.
Charge Display The charging status of the battery is shown in the display as
follows:
80 - 100 % charged
60 - 80 % charged
40 - 60 % charged
20 - 40 % charged
0 - 20 % charged

Your handset has a battery management system that has to determine the limits of the battery charging status before it can
display an accurate charge level.
When the battery has been replaced, the charge level is not
correctly displayed until a whole charge and discharge cycle has been completed.
When the handset is in the charging station, the flashing or lit
sections indicate charging and the charge level.
Charge warning
When the battery capacity is nearly exhausted, the battery
symbol will flash in the display. If the battery warning tone is
switched on, you will hear the battery warning tone (refer also
to the section “Attention tones” in the chapter entitled Menu:
Te l e pho n e Op t i on s starting on page 48).
If you are making a call at the time, you still have up to three
minutes of talk time before the handset switches itself off. If
you are not making a call and the handset is not in the charging station, “Battery empty” appears in the display . You can no
longer make a telephone call now.

6 Initial Setup and

Handset
Subscription
(Checking In)
Your handset can be opera ted in up to ten different communications systems. To be able to do this, it must be subscribed to
every system, this means: the handset must be checked in.
Note: If you handset is preinstalled by your supplier, no
check-in operation is necessary.
Enrol your handset in the communications system as described
in the chapter Menu: System starting on page 46.
Subscription
The handset will store a subscription record for each communications system it has been checked into. Each subscription
record includes a name; whenever the handset enters the range
of a base station, this name will be appear in the handset’s display.
Registration
Once the handset has been subscribed to (checked into) one or
more communications systems you can make and r eceive calls.
If you have activated the Auto Search feature (see page 47),
the handset will automatically register with the nearest base
station in its range (provided the handset is in the idle state). If
you do not want to use the auto search feature, you can manual register the handset with a base station using the subscription record stored in the handset.

Top Line /
Symbol Line
In the top line of the display, information is given concerning
the current status of the telephone during a call or in stand-by
mode. When using the menus, this line displays the text Menu.
In idle state the top line is replaced by the symbol line.

The middle lines of the display provide information on the
current call status or menu lists and texts.
In the idle state, the display shows the name of the base station, the programmed user name (see also page 47) and the internal telephone number (if programmed) as well as the current time.

Softkey Line The texts and symbols in this line refer to the keys underneath.
The contents of the line change according to the operating status.
Illumination The display is automatically illuminated when calls are re-
ceived or when you press a key. The illumination is automatically switched off again ten seconds after the last key was
pressed.

Above the arrow keys you will see symbols that identify the individual functions of the arrow keys:
Deleting
characters
A long key press of the “down” arrow deletes individual numbers or characters.
The two keys below the display,
as well as the arrow keys, are
known as softkeys. The functions assigned to the keys are
shown in the lowest line of the
display. The key function
changes automatically according
to the operating status of the
handset.

The arrow keys allow you to select telephone numbers
from the phone book
When you are entering telephone numbers or names,
you can make changes by moving a cursor. The arrow
keys shift the cursor to the left or right.
If a selection list (e. g. phone book or menu) is displayed, you can use the arrow keys to scroll to the desired entry. If a continuous text is shown (e. g. a message), you can scroll up and down through the text
with the arrow keys.
During a call you can change the volume of the
receiver/loudspeaker using the arrow keys.

If a function only has one quick-switch option, it is operated
by this key. Active settings (ON) are indicated by a “

to the relevant item; inactive settings (OFF) are indicated by

softkey on the left, you can perform ac-
tions on the selected item in the menu you are currently in.
Softkey: Esc Press the

softkey to exit the section of the menu currently
displayed. You will then see the selection from the previous
menu or the current idle or call display.
Softkey: Redial

Enables you to select a telephone number from the redial
list.
Softkey: Menu A key press invokes a menu that depends on the state of the
handset. This menu only displays the relevant operations that
can currently be performed.
Automatic Hide Menus are automatically hidden under the following circum-
stances:
■ Whenever you receive a call whi le your phone is in the idle
or call state.
■ In the call state, when you perform input that requires in-
voking a new, call-dependent menu (e. g. you press the Rkey
R to make an enquiry).
■ If you press a softkey that invokes a menu other than the
one currently displayed.
If you have saved your input in a menu, it remains saved when
you leave the menu.
Receiver Key A The receiver key has the same function as lifting or replac-
ing the receiver of a normal telephone.

R The handset key R has multiple functions.
During a conversation: A short key press initiates an enquiry
during a call. A long key press activates the speaker or handsfree mode.
In the idle state: A long key press activates the speaker or
hands-free mode. A short key press activates the shortcut menu
(refer to Menu Shortcuts starting on page 53).
Key Lock In the idle state press the left soft keyD and # successively to
switch the key lock on.
To switch the key lock off again press
D #.
Number Keys The number keys are used to directly enter telephone numbers
and names, including Vanity phone numbers (which use letters standing for specific digits of a phone number). Press the
0 key for a longer period to insert a pause in predial mode.
When entering text, you can use the arrow keys to move the
cursor to the beginning or end of the entry. Press the “down”
arrow key long to delete individual numbers/characters. The
Esc
soft key cancels the entire procedure. The cursor moves
on automatically if there is input or no new character for a
time. See Entering Characters / Names starting on page 33 for a
description on how to enter text.
Switching Off To switch off the handset, press the right soft key E for a
longer period (approx. 2 sec.). Switch on the handset again
with the same key.
SOS Key A separate key on the top left side of the handset activates an
SOS call or message in idle mode. See Emergency Call /
SOS Number starting on page 49 for details.

9 Calling
Handset On /
Off
The handset can be switched off by pressing E for more than
1 second. The handset is switched on by pressing
E for more
than 1 second or by placing the handset in the charger.
Setting the
volume
During a call you can adjust the speaker or earpiece volume to
three levels using the arrow keys. The current setting will be
shown in your display.
To adjust the earpiece volume, press the arrow keys; to adjust
the loudspeaker volume, switch the loudspeaker on and then
press the arrow keys.
Handsfree
Speaker/Hands-
free Use
To allow several people in the same room to take part in a call,
press the loudspeaker key
R during a call. Repeat to switch
off. You will achieve the best quality when the handset is in a
vertical position; in other words when neither the loudspeaker

SOS Call
This handset can be used to send emergency calls to a certain

call press the SOS key.
Note: The SOS key will be activated in idle mode only.
Mandown Call
An integrated sensor detects the position of the handset. If the
handset’s position changes from upright to horizontal (the angle
of inclination increases), a mandown call is initiated or a message
is sent to a pre-programmed mandown call number. The number
and the text message are stored in the menu “Telephone Option”
(refer to
Menu: Telephone Options
starting on page 48).
If the handset has detected the mandown condition and the
“Mandown Auto Answer” option is enabled (refer to
Mandown
Call
starting on page 49), the next incoming call will be automat-
ically answered in hands-free mode with the speaker on.

indication for Voice Mail
Note: This function is applicable only if it is supported by
your communications system.
When a icon appears in the idle mode, the receiver has a
message in his voice mail box. After listening to all new voice
mail messages, the icon will disappear in idle mode.
In case the handset is switched off, is out of coverage or is in
the charger while silent “charging”, the message waiting indication is updated after the handset is locked to the DECT system again.

11 Messages
Note: This function is applicable only if it is supported by
your communications system.
This handset can be used to send and receive text messages. A
differentiation is made between urgent and normal messages
which are signalled in different ways on the handset. Every
message is stored in a list which can contain up to 10 entries.
You can also receive and send messages during a connection.
The signalling of normal and urgent messages can be effec t ed
by means of different ringer melodies (refer to Menu: Ringer
Settings starting on page 43).
Messages cannot be sent or received if the handset is outside
the range of the system or is in the charger whilst “Silent
charging” is switched on (refer to Silent Charging starting on
page 50).
If a message cannot be delivered, the sender always hears an error beep. If a message is received whilst you are making a menu
setting, the menu is aborted and all entries which have not yet
been saved are not stored. F urthermore, phone numbers which
have already been enter ed and the text of a mess age which you
are currently writing are lost if you receive a message.
Urgent messages
Urgent messages are messages whi ch you mus t confirm. An activated key lock is temporarily deactivated when receiving such
a message so that its receipt can be acknowledged. If you receive an urgent message, this is immediately signalled on the
display.
If you use the ringer, you can hear the melody for urgent messages. The ringer volume increases to the maximum during the
signalling process. If you receive an urgent message during a
call, you hear a repeated alert tone in the speech path.

Normal messages
Normal messages are messages which you don’t need to confirm. The “Normal Message D isplay” setting can be used to select whether or not a normal message is shown. When selected
normal messages are immediately signalled on the display.
If you use the ringer , you hear the melody for normal messages
once. If you receive a normal message during a call, then you
hear a short alert tone in the speech path.
Receipt confirmation
You have to confirm the receipt of an urgent message. When
an urgent message is not confirmed within 60 seconds, the initiator will be signalled the message has not been received successfully.
OK
confirms the receipt of messages.
Delete
confirms the receipt of messages and deletes the mes-
sage.
All other keys are blocked until you confirm the message with
OK
or
Delete
.
If the message list already contains 10 entries, the storage/ non
storage of a message depends on the setting of the “Telephone
Options: Message Options: Overwrite” menu item:
If the setting has been selected (
Overwrite
), the oldest mes-
sage is deleted before the new message is stored.

setting has not been selected, the message is
not stored.
A full message memory is indicated by the flashing symbol
on the display.

Settings
At least 100 phone numbers and names can be stored in the telephone book and the names are sorted alphabetically, therefore
the telephone book offers an alphabetic search function. Entering the same name more than once is no t accepted, but the same
phone number can be stored with different na mes. Entering the

number can be stored with different names. An entry can consist of a maximum of 32 digits for the number and 16 characters
for the name (refer to
Entering Characters / Names

page 33). The beginning / end of the telephone book list is
marked by a dashed line . If a caller is listed in the telephone
book and his phone number has been transmitted at the incoming call, then his name appears on the display.

Missed and
Rejected Calls
All calls with a transmitted phone number are entered into the
caller list. The text
Missed Call
is shown in the display when
calls have been alerted for at least 10 seconds. If the caller is
registered in the telephone book, the name is displayed. After
you have called up the caller list, the
Missed Call
indication
is removed from the display.
The last 30 phone numbers are listed. Every additional phone
number overwrites the oldest entry. When a call back is successfully executed to an entry in the caller list, the entry is removed from the caller list. Multiple calls with the same phone
number are only stored once and the timestamp of the last call
is stored. When an attempt has been made to call back a caller,
this entry is moved to the redial list.

20 Menu: Caller Filter
You can store up to 10 phone numbers in a caller filter list.
Calls with these numbers can be accepted or blocked. For the
caller filter to function, the caller’s number must be transmitted via ISDN.
If activated “

” the display shows a caller filter icon behind
the time.

number and 16 characters for the name. If you enter a star
digit at the end of a number, you can filter all numbers that

be filtered (e. g. “12345678 and 12398765”).

21 Menu: System
Registration
Code
The handset can be operated with a maximum of 10 DECT
systems. Before you can make a call via the DECT system, the
handset has to be registered to the respective system. A system
ID and registration code may be necessary for the registration
process. Ask the respective system administrator for the valid
registration code. When the handset is not yet subscribed to
the system the display is showing

: this code is used to register the handset
(authentication code). The DECT system supplies this code.
Enter Name
: give the name of the DECT system to which you
are registering. This will be shown on the idle display. For information concerning the entry of characters, refer to Entering

: the phone number, assigned to your DECT
handset can be entered here (ask your system administrator for
the phone number).

Deleting subscription is only possible, when the handset is out
of coverage from the system or when it is not succesfully registered to a system. Consequently, the handset can only be used

mation from your handset for the selected DECT system.
Note that after execution of this function, the handset cannot
be used on that DECT system anymore! To use it again, you
must go through the registration procedure at the DECT system and at the handset.

at which it will emit an acoustic signal. If activated “

The alarm signal lasts 60 seconds and can be switched off by
pressing any key. If you are in conversation or if you receice a
call/message, you will hear a special tone.
Note: You can set a special melody for alarm indication (refer to Menu: Ringer Settings starting on page 43). The alarm
volume is the same as the internal ring tone volume.
When the alarm goes off, “Alarm” is shown on the display.
Powering the handset On/Off doesn’t affect the alarm setting.
No alarm will be given, when the handset has been switched
off.
The alarm time can only be set when date and time are available on the handset (only useable when supported by your telephone system).

This function can be used to store the name of the telephone
user. The user name consists of maximum 16 characters. The

speaker (hands-free mode). Otherwise an incoming call will be
rejected while the handset initiates a mandown call.
Delay
specifies the time that must elapse before the mandown call is
executed. Within this period of time the mandown call can be
cancelled only by pressing the
Esc
softkey. It is not sufficient
to place the handset in an upright position again.
Note: If the handset is reset, the mandown function is deactivated. However, SOS number and message text for the
mandown call are not deleted (refer to Resetting the Handset
starting on page 52). If the handset is switched off, the stored
mandown configuration remains unchanged.

The security functions are protected by a PIN code (4 digits).
The PIN entry is only necessary when read only is switched
on. In the delivery state the PIN is set to 0 0 0 0. For additional security, **** is displayed when entering the PIN.

Several frequently used menu items can also be activated with
shortcuts, so you do not have to scroll through the menu.
When the handset is idle, press the signal key

Buzzer on / off 1 switches the buzzer signalling off. The bell icon appears
in the display.
2 switches the buzzer signalling back on.

A maximum of eight handsets can be charged simultaneously. The charger rack is designed for desktop use and for
wall mounting.
■ Belt Clip
Belt clip and adapter for the handset. The adapter is
clipped onto the handset and is removable without any remains or damages.
■ Headset
The headset in combination with the belt clip makes really
handsfree telephoning possible. This is finally optimized
by the handset feature “Auto Answer”.

26 Care and Maintenance
Your telephone is a product which meets high demands with
regard to design. It should therefore be treated with care. We
want this product to give you pleasure for a long time and
therefore make the following suggestions.
Pay attention to all safety instructions. These instructions apply to the handset, charger, batteries (the whole telephone) as
well as the accessories.
To clean the telephone, first of all disconnect the mains plug
on the charger. Wipe the device using an antistatic cloth or a
slightly moistened soft chamois leather and then wipe with a
dry cloth.
Note: never spray the telephone with cleaning agents or solvents.
Clean the charge contacts on the handset and the charger by
means of a fluff-free cloth.
If the telephone or one of the accessory parts does not function
perfectly, please contact your supplier‘s customer service.
Do not carry the telephone in the pocket of your trousers!
