Introduction

The PASCO ME-8978A Flex Rod is a unique variation on the traditional lab stand. Use it with a base or table clamp (sold separately) to support sensors, photogates, pulleys, diode lasers, test tubes, and other lightweight equipment. The flexible “goose-neck” tubing allows easily and accurate positioning by bending the rod.

Sensors and other equipment can be screwed directly to Flex Rod’s 1/4-20 threaded studs or held in the included rod clamp, double clamp, or three-finger clamp. The rod clamp and double clamp can also be screwed directly to Flex Rod’s threaded studs. The rod clamp and double clamp hold cylindrical items up to 12 millimeters (mm) in diameter. The three finger clamp spans 62 mm when fully open.

Compatible Bases

The assembled Flex Rod can be mounted on any base or table clamp that accepts an unthreaded 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) diameter rod or a 1/2-13 threaded rod.

Set-up

1. Screw one end of the flexible tubing through a lock nut into the mating hole of the Base Adapter Rod.

2. Secure the Base Adapter Rod in a base or table clamp either by clamping it or screwing it into a 1/2-13 threaded hole.

3. Screw a second lock nut onto the threaded stud on the free end of the Flexible Tubing.

4. If the equipment to be mounted includes a 1/4-20 threaded hole (such as a PASCO sensor), screw it loosely onto the threaded stud; then tighten the lock nut against it.

6. To attach the included three-finger clamp, first attach a rod clamp or double clamp to the flexible tubing. Mount the three-finger clamp in the rod clamp and tighten the thumbscrew to hold it in place.
