In the early 1970s, the Apollo 11 had just landed on the moon, signalling the start of the new space age, Volkswagen Beetles ruled the roads and roller skates were a must-have. The Toot-aLoop fashion radio, with its objet d‘art theme, unusual design and fun colours, embodied the sense of fun and youthfulness of prevailing pop culture.

A hi-fi audio craze gripped Japan from the late 1960s through to the mid-1980s, as music lovers sought highfidelity sound that was true to the recording studio. The remarkable SL-10 employed a linear tracking system, where the needle traces the grooves at the same angle as the blade that cut the record in the first place.

PANASONIC ECO IDEAS DECLARATION

In addition to adding major environmental metrics to the GP3 business plan, Mr Fumio Ohtsubo, President of Matsushita Electric Industrial, recently announced the Panasonic Eco Ideas declaration comprising three pledges:

1. We will produce energy efficient products

2. We will reduce CO2 emissions across all our manufacturing sites

3. We will encourage the rollout of environmental activities worldwide

So what do these pledges mean in practice?

ENERGY EFFICIENT PRODUCTS

Additionally, Panasonic aims to deliver greener products. This entails not only using sustainable materials or building recyclability into the product design – but also ensuring that the products efﬁ ciently conserve energy. Panasonic aims to increase the number of products with top-level, energy-efﬁ cient performance whilst phasing out products with low energy efﬁ ciency.

REDUCING CO² BY 300,000 TONNES BY 2010

By 2011, i.e. over the next three years, Panasonic aims to eliminate 300,000 tonnes of CO

emissions from its 294 manufacturing plants around the globe.

In 2011, Panasonic plans to further reduce emissions to the level of that in 2001, effectively rolling back its CO

emission amount to that of ten years

previously. To achieve this goal, Panasonic has established a system where 23 environmental key performance indicators (such as CO

emissions) are

collected each month from all 294 manufacturing sites worldwide and are monitored. Additionally, and just as important, the reduction of CO

is not

only limited to manufacturing activities, but also includes: product planning, procurement, sales, logistics and recycling.

Our goal is to help build a sustainable society by accelerating the spread of products with higher environmental performance. Since starting the development of our Green Products Plan in 1997, we have worked hard to minimise the input of energy and resources, as well as the output of waste and emissions throughout the products’ life cycles. We constantly increase the proportion of Green Products across our entire product range. Our product development is based on criteria such as universal design, which means easy-to-use design for everyone and the minimisation of environmental impact.

To begin with, Formula 1 cars do not just have a turn key ignition like normal road cars – instead a laptop is needed, and it’s a Panasonic unique magnesium-encased Toughbookseries of laptops which perform this task for Panasonic Toyota Racing. A Toughbook is attached to the car, the engine is initially turned over without a spark such that it generates all the pressures in the various systems, and the Toughbook is used to analyse that all is functioning correctly

The Panasonic Toyota Racing garage and motorhomes are the most technologically advanced in the Paddock and contain numerous LCD and Plasma TVs. Panasonic Viera LCDs, due to their bright backlights, are used in the pit garage to display the telemetry information collected from the car during races – vital information which needs to be shared with all engineers. Unusual for an LCD, Viera LCDs boast ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angles, meaning that there is no problem for the all the pit crew to crowd around and see it. Furthermore, the motorhome is ﬁ lled with luxury large-screen Viera Plasma TVs – ideal for watching the races unfold in beautiful, high deﬁ nition quality – and equally good for showing ﬁ lms to help the mechanics wind-down after a hard day’s work!

When Panasonic began to develop its design vision for VIERA in 2008, its main aspiration was to produce designs that are suitable for a wide range of users and to devise a premium design series that underlines the unique identity that makes Panasonic products instantly recognisable.

The focus of the ﬂ at screen TV market, especially within the premium class segment, has shifted towards a slim, lightweight design utilising highend materials. Taking this trend into account, a key factor of importance in the 2008 Panasonic VIERA design approach is to integrate European style and taste into this year‘s range of VIERA TVs. The approach to the design process can be described as “Innovative Design”. The basic concept central to innovative design includes continuous innovation, values for the future and a keen sensitivity to harmony and balance in the home. In comparison to its predecessor, the 2008 design has been enhanced and yet has retained its consistency, from the smaller-sized LCD TVs right through to the largest Plasma TVs. The result of our endeavours towards a unique

design concept is to use one sheet of glass making the screen completely ﬂ at, thus giving it the impression of it literally “ﬂ oating”. This is a major step for Panasonic: developing a unique concept in one year while maintaining the design and the renowned Panasonic construction quality. Historically, the Panasonic brand has been addressing a more mature consumer base than other brands; therefore to meet the needs of these consumers, we have maintained a progressive, sensitive and timeless design rather than turning to an avant-garde, trendy design. With that said, we have been regenerating the brand to address the needs of a younger consumer base as well. VIERA‘s simple, straight line and organicallybalanced shape makes for an overall attractive design that stands out from the crowd.

One Remote, Total Control

Home Cinema Connection

Seamless GUI – Control your Home Cinema with the VIERA Remote Control. When the TV is on, the VIERA Link function lets you switch to home cinema mode using just the VIERA remote control unit. Simply press the VIERA Link button on the VIERA remote control and select “Home Cinema” on the VIERA Link menu screen. The Home Cinema system’s menu will be displayed on the TV screen, and you can begin playback of a DVD disc or select from the DVD disc menu.

Blu-ray Disc Player Connection

By simply pressing the VIERA Link button on the VIERA Remote Control and selecting “Player” you can directly operate your Blu-ray Disc Player with the VIERA Remote Control. You can start the playback of a Blu-ray Disc, select from the Blu-ray Disc menu or even change settings in the menu of the Player. All of this is possible by using only the VIERA remote control.

One-Touch Home Cinema Playback with VIERA Remote

Just press the “Play” button of the VIERA remote control and let Panasonic do the rest. All components turn on, the correct VIERA input is selected, the TV built-in speaker sound is muted, and the Home Cinema starts playback. It all happens automatically and in an instant.

DVD Recorder Connection

Suppose that while you are watching one TV programme you decide that you want to play a previously recorded programme, or set the unit to record a future broadcast. Simply press the VIERA Link button, and the TV menu screen automatically switches to the VIERA Link menu screen. After selecting the DVD recorder on the menu screen, it allows you to set timer recordings or use playback functions on the ﬂy. All of these operations can be done using only the VIERA remote control.

HD Camcorder Connection

By connecting a Panasonic HD Camcorder to your VIERA with an HDMI cable, you can display a control panel for HD camcorder operation onto the VIERA screen. Then simply use the VIERA remote control to play back the camera. You get high-quality HD images and sounds with a simple connection and super-easy operation.

VIERA TVs feature Panasonic’s image-enhancing system V-real PRO 3, which applies full-digital processing to the 1920 x 1080 high-definition video signals received from HD broadcasts and Blu-ray discs. Because the signals are processed digitally from initial input all the way to final display, there is virtually no loss of image quality. Pictures are exquisitely clear and remarkably detailed, with even delicate textures and patterns visible. With its 1920 x 1080p resolution, the VIERA full HD panel displays beautiful images without needing to perform pixel conversion for the

1080p video signals pro cessed by the video circuitry. Panasonic offers the full HD panel in 32-inch and larger models.

The standard European PAL broadcast signal is 50Hz – meaning that the on-screen image on your TV is refreshed 50 times each second. The VIERA Tough Panel provides a high resistance of impact up to four joule; the glass adds extra assurance of protection if the TV screen is accidentally hit. Additionally, the protective panel makes cleaning the screen easier by simply wiping the panel with a soft cloth when necessary.

LCD: WIDE 178 DEGREE VIEWING ANGLE WITH IPS ALPHA PANEL

Many LCDs suffer from colour wash-out when not viewed from directly in front – a big problem if you have a large family trying to watch a ﬁlm together. VIERA LCD IPS alpha panels have a viewing angle of 178 degrees, both vertically and horizontally, eliminating faded images that can occur by viewing the panel from certain seating positions. Our LCD panels are built on the strengths of IPS by delivering faster response time and reproducing intense realistic deep black levels and contrast ratios, especially when employed with Panasonic Intelligent Scene Controller technology.

LCD: INTELLIGENT SCENE CONTROLLER – TRUE-TO-LIFE PICTURE WITH CRISP BLACKS

This system adjusts the back light brightness and contrast according to the scene. In dark scenes, the back light intensity is reduced to reproduce deeper blacks. SAVING ENERGY WITH ECO MODE

People are increasingly concerned about the energy consumption of their electronic products. Therefore Panasonic has introduced an Eco Mode as standard in most VIERA TVs. Having activated the Eco Mode, a photo-sensor measures the ambient light conditions in the room, and the picture settings are adjusted automatically. As a result, the TV uses less power in dark light conditions without any deterioration in picture quality. In the Eco Demo Mode the Eco scale can be displayed on the TV screen to show how the energy consumption levels change with ambient lighting.

Ordinary TV broadcasts and DVD discs

provide SD images with 576 x 640 pixels or 576 x 720 pixels. Today‘s newest HDTVs, on the other hand, can display images with 1080 x 1920 pixels. HDTVs require high-quality image sources suitable for their large screens. If the optimization process for high-quality images is inadequate, the picture can become blurry or grainy. DIGA‘s original i/p conversion and up-conversion functions solve this problem. These functions convert SD signals from DVD discs or DIGA‘s own hard disc drive into 1080p signals that provide high-resolution images. The conversion process boosts the amount of image information by about 5 times, so pictures are clear and beautiful.

DIGA uses Precision Pixel Generation technology in combination with three advanced functions – Pixel-Based Motion Adaptive, Diagonal Processing, and 2:2 Detection and Processing – to apply the type of i/p conversion that best suits the image. Precise Pixel Generation is using a high-speed algorithm. This technology uses information obtained from 60 neighbouring pixels to generate a new pixel for an image area.

NO MORE BLUR CAUSED BY HAND SHAKE

Gyrosensors detect hand shake and the Mega O.I.S. lens shifts to compensate these subtle movements, preventing hand shake blurring. This system is completely optical – it does not affect the CCD or image processing.

NO MORE MOTION BLUR

Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether a subject is moving or not and changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. The results are clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur.

NO MORE OUT-OF-FOCUS PORTRAITS!

The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change.

The Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects image settings like scenery, portrait, macro, night portrait or night scenery accordingly, so you are assured of getting superb results every time you shoot, no matter which scene or subject.

Intelligent exposure instantly analyses the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark due to dim lighting, back lighting or the use of ﬂ ash. By adjusting the brightness of dark areas, this function produces natural and realistic images.

NO MORE UNFOCUSED MOVING SUBJECTS

Once you focus on your subject, AF Tracking automatically tracks it until you press the shutter. When you‘re taking pictures of an active subject, this function eliminates the need to press the shutter button halfway down repeatedly to readjust the focus.

Image quality is in no way reduced with the Advanced O.I.S. / O.I.S. lens compensation. The lens moves up-down or left-right, bending the incoming light in order to correct the effects of hand-shake.

Panasonic‘s Advanced O.I.S. system corrects the effects of hand-shake 4,000x/second, balancing out jittery movements before light enters the Sensor. This compensation functionality is effective for both moving and still pictures. The technology behind it is very effective – the Advanced O.I.S. system uses gyronsensors to detect movement caused by handshake and adjusts the lens inside to compensate it. As this system is an optical one, image quality will not be compromised.

FACE DETECTION

It is difﬁ cult to shoot scenes with deep shadows or large differences between light and dark areas. The subject often looks too dark and faces are hardly visible. The new Panasonic Full-HD camcorder solve this problem with their Face Detection function which automatically adjusts the exposure according to the ambient brightness. As a result, faces are bright and easy to see. When the camcorder detects a face in the scene, a square frame appears in the LCD monitor and exposure is adjusted to the correct brightness level. In addition, the skin tone will be smoothed as well. Face Detection can detect up to ﬁ ve faces at a time. With the new Face Detection function, Panasonic‘s Full-HD camcorders make it easy to capture beautiful faces and clear backgrounds even in dim or backlit situations.
