Thank you for purchasing the DVD-ROM Drive Pack for the Panasonic CF-71 notebook
computer series.

When mounted in the multimedia pocket of the computer in place of a floppy disk drive, this
product functions as an internal DVD-ROM drive.
Store this manual in a safe place after reading it.

*The DVD-ROM Drive Pack may also be referred to as the DVD-ROM drive.

Usage Precautions

• Do not place items other than discs on the tray.

• Do not leave the tray in the open position or touch the lens area. Should the lens
become soiled by dust or dirt, the unit may not read discs properly.

• Under some conditions, dust may build up on the optical lens or disc, possibly resulting in

malfunction.

• Do not apply excessive force to the tray in the open position, doing so could damage the
tray.

• Do not open the DVD-ROM drive or move the computer while the DVD-ROM drive is
being accessed. Doing so could cause it to malfunction. In addition, after running an
application involving access to a disc, do not open the DVD-ROM drive or remove the
disc until after the application has been closed.

• After closing the tray, do not attempt to access a disc until the DVD-ROM drive indicator

(H) disappears.

• Do not expose the DVD-ROM Drive Pack to oily or tobacco smoke. Doing so could
shorten the service life of the lens.

• Cleaning the DVD-ROM drive using a CD lens cleaner (except a liquid type cleaner) is
recommended if it malfunctions.

• Never insert foreign objects such as paper clips into the slot in the DVD-ROM Drive
Pack.

• Do not use discs that have become deformed (warped, not completely round, etc.).

To avoid damaging discs;

• Do not touch the surface as it can cause the disc to become dirty or scratched.

• Do not allow discs to become dirty or scratched.

• Do not place or store discs in locations exposed to heat, direct sunlight, humidity or dust.

• Do not write on the surface of the disc with a bail-point pen or other writing instrument.

• If the disc is brought from a cold into a warm environment, moisture may form on the disc.
Wipe this moisture off with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth before using the disc.

• Do not drop, bend, or place heavy objects on top of discs.

• Cleaning the disc using a CD cleaner is recommended once every 2 or 3 months.

If the disc gets dirty

After wiping the disc with a moist, soft cloth, wipe it with a dry

cloth. Always wipe from the center toward the edge.

Mounting the DVD-ROM Drive Pack

1 Power off your computer (O’"0perating instructions" of the computer,

"Shutting Down")

Do not shut down using the suspend* or hibernation mode.

*With Windows 98, "Suspend" is called "Standby".

2 Removing the device (Floppy disk drive)

(T) Press the MP release button. The device will eject slightly.

(^Remove the device by holding both sides of the device.

I Handle the device as shown (holding both sides).

Otherwise, the device may be damaged. Also, do not apply
excessive downward force on the device. The projections at
the bottom of a device become deformed.

»Be sure the shape of the lock at the bottom of a device does

not become defonned. Do not insert a device that has become
deformed into the multimedia pocket. The device may be
come impossible to remove later.

3 Installing the device (DVD-ROM Drive Pack)

Gently insert the device into the multimedia pocket
by pushing on both corners until it clicks into place.

Do not install the device upside-down.

The bottom of the drive may become disfigured.

4 Power on your computer

Press the eject button and slowly pull out the

tray.

6 Place a disc

Place the disc with the label facing upward in

the drive and push down until the center holder

clicks.

Place a finger on the center holder and lift up
on the edge of the disc.

7 Close the disc tray

Close the tray without touching the eject button.

' Do not apply excessive force to the tray in the open position, doing so could diunage the tray.

If the PC Card does not work, there may be no interrupt request (IRQ) line available.

Deactivate unnecessary equipment using in Setup Utility.

Software Preparation (first time only)

The following settings are necessary to prepare the DVD-ROM Drive Pack for use:
(t :The following settings are unnecessary.)

1 Add the check mark for [DMA] in [Start] - [Settings] - [Control Panel] - [System]

- [Device Manager] - [CD-ROM] - [MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8173] - [Set
tings].

2 Set [L:] for both [Start drive letter] and [End drive letter] in [Reserved drive

letters].

3 At the [System Properties], click [ok]. The display will ask you to restart Win

dows, then press [Yes].

When reinstalling, refer to the above steps 2 - 3 to set the reserved drive letters of the CD-ROM drive.

<The model that the CD-ROM Pack (CF-VCD711) is not included>

When booting up from the FIRSTAID FD (for example, to reinstall the operating system), the
DVD-ROM Drive does not have to be replaced by the CD-ROM Drive (CF-VCD711). The
CD-ROM driver will recognize the DVD-ROM Drive.

Using the DVD-ROM Drive Pack in the MS-DOS mode

: It is unnecessary to read this explanation.)

To use the DVD-ROM Drive Pack in the MS-DOS mode, configure the drive following the
steps below after performing the above steps I - 3. If the steps listed below are per

formed without completing steps 1-3 above first, the drive will not operate properly.

1 Click the [Start] button then select [Shut Down],
2 Select [Restart in MS-DOS mode] and click [OK].
3 Open the "CONFIG.SYS" file for editing by issuing the following commands:

4 Move the cursor to the line containing "SHEBD ATAPICD.SYS*" and

delete the characters "rem" at the beginning of the line. (Deleting "rem" causes
the item to become valid.)

5 Press ( Alt ] +CED .then CD to save the file. Then press C Alt ) + CD. then ( X ) to

exit the Edit program.

6 Follow the same steps to edit the "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file,

7 Move the cursor to the line containing "MSCDEX.EXE" and delete the characters "rem"

at the beginning of the line. (Deleting "rem" causes the item to become valid.)

9 Restart the computer.

Power-saving mode

If the DVD-ROM Drive Pack has not been accessed within 120 seconds, the drive motor
will automatically shut down to reduce the power consumption. When the DVD-ROM
Drive Pack is accessed once again, the power of the drive motor is turned on. However,
approximately 30 seconds are required until data is actually read from the disc.

•References to the "CD-ROM" in the Setup Utility will not change to "DVD-ROM",
even when the DVD-ROM Drive Pack is installed.

• If the vibration of the DVD-ROM drive is excessive, set the CD-ROM Drive Speed
to [12x speed] (or displayed [Low] ) in the Setup Utility. ( The display of the item
may remain unchanged when the DVD-ROM Drive Pack is installed. )

Troubleshooting

The computer does not recognize the

DVD-ROM Drive Pack.

The access lamp ((^) does not light.

Cannot play disc or read data from it. Is the disc bent, scratched, or dirty?
Cannot eject disc.

• Have you installed the drivers as described
in the "Software Preparation" section?

• Did you restart the computer after installing
the drivers?

• Is the DVD-ROM Drive Pack properly
mounted in the multimedia pocket?

Is the disc loaded on the tray correctly?

Is the computer powered on?

To remove a disc when the computer is pow

ered off, insert a pointed object such as the
bent-out tip of a paper clip into the emergency
hole. Pushing it completely to the end will free
the tray so that it can be pulled out.

A blue background appears on the screen
with the MPEG image.

The disc tray does not close.

schieben, verfügen Sie überein internes DVD-ROM-Laufwerk.
Sie sollten diese Bedienungsanleitung an einer sicheren Stelle verwahren.

Vorsichtshinweise zum Gebrauch

• Legen Sie nur Discs in das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk ein.

• Lassen Sie das Fach nicht offen und berühren Sie die Abtastoptik nicht mit den
Fingern. Bei Verschmutzung der Optik können Lesefehler auftreten.

• Achten Sie darauf, das geöffnete Fach nicht zu stark zu belasten, es könnte dabei beschädigt
werden.

• Während des Zugriffs auf das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk sollten Sie das Laufwerk keinesfalls

öffnen oder den Computer bewegen. Andernfalls können Fehlfunktionen auftreten.
Außerdem sollte das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk nicht geöfffnet bzw. die Disc entfernt werden,
solange eine Anwendung läuft, die darauf zugegriffen hat. Entfernen Sie die Disc erst,

nachdem die entsprechende Anwendung wieder geschlossen wurde.

• Bei Funktionsstörungen empfehlen wir die Reinigung des DVD-Laufwerkes, wozu ein

CD-Objektivreiniger (außer dem Flüssigkeitsreiniger) zu verwenden ist.

• Führen Sie in das Gerät keine Fremdkörper wie z.B. Büroklammern ein.

• Berühren Sie die Fläche der Disc nicht, damit diese nicht schmutzig oder verkratzt wird.

• Verwenden Sie keine Discs, die deformiert sind (durchgebogen oder nicht völlig rund
usw.).

• Verwenden Sie das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk-Pack nicht in Räumen, in denen stärkere
Konzentrationen von Ölnebel oder Tabakrauch auftreten. Die Nutzungsdauer der Optik
könnte sonst verkürzt werden.

Beachten Sie zum Schutz der Discs die foigenden Punkte;

• Halten Sie Ihre Discs sauber und frei von Kratzern.

• Verwahren Sie Ihre Discs nicht an einem Ort, wo sie zu hohen Temperaturen, direkter
Sonneneinstrahlung, Feuchtigkeit oder Staub ausgesetzt sind.

• Die Oberfläche der Disc darf nicht beschriftet werden.

• Wenn Discs aus kalten in warme Räume gebracht werden, kann auf ihnen Feuchtigkeit
kondensieren. Diese muß mit einem weichen, nicht fusselnden Tuch entfernt werden, bevor
Sie die Disc in das Laufwerk einlegen können.

• Discs dürfen weder fallengelassen noch verbogen oder durch schwere Gegenstände belastet
werden.

• Wir empfehlen, daß die Disc alle 2-3 Monate unter Verwendung eines CD-Diskreinigers
gereinigt wird.

Reinigen Sie die disc mit einem weichen, feuchten Tuch, und wischen Sie mit einem
trockenen Tuch nach. Wischen Sie immer von der Mitte gerade nach außen.

Schalten Sie den Computer aus

Schalten Sie den Computer nicht auf Unterbrechungs-* oder Stillegungsmodus um.

*Mit Windows 98, wird "Untcrbrechungsmodus""Standby-Modus" geheißen.

2 Entnehmen des Geräts

(^Drücken Sie die MP-Freigabetaste. Das Gerät gleitet

ein Stück aus dem Gehäuse heraus,

(^Fassen Sie das Gerät an beiden Seiten und ziehen Sie

es ganz heraus.

• Fassen Sie das Gerät wie gezeigt an (halten Sie es an den Seiten
fest). Andernfalls wird es möglicherweise beschädigt. Drücken bzw.
ziehen Sie das Gerät auch nicht starte nach unten bzw. nach oben.

‘ Dadurch können die Laschen an der Unterseite verformt werden,

• Achten Sie darauf, daß die Rastlasche unten am Gerät nicht

[ deformiert ist. Geräte, bei denen diese Lasche verformt ist,

sollten nicht in das Multimedia-Pocket eingesetzt werden.

Andernfalls kann es passieren, daß sich das Gerät nicht mehr
aus dem Multimedia-Pocket entfernen läßt.

Einsetzen des Geräts (DVD-ROM-Laufwerk-Pack)

Setzen Sie das Gerät vorsichtig in das Multimedia-

Pocket ein. Fassen Sie es dazu an beiden Seiten und
schieben Sie es bis zum hörbaren Einrasten in das
Gehäuse.

• Achten Sie darauf, das geöffnete Fach nicht zu stark zu belasten, es könnte dabei
beschädigt werden.

Wenn die Karte nicht funktioniert, steht möglicherweise keine
Unterbrechungsanforderungsleitung zur Verfügung. Deaktivieren Sie unnötige

Installation der Software (nur bei der Installation)

Vor dem ersten Einsatz des DVD-ROM-Laufwerk-Pack müssen Sie die folgenden
Einstellungen vornehmen;

1 Setzen Sie ein Häkchen bei [DMA] unter [Start]- [Einstellungen]-[SystemsteuerungJ-

[System]-[Geräte-Manager]-[CD-ROM]-[MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8173]­[Einstellungenj.

2 Set [L:] Wählen Sie unter [Reservierte Laufwerkbuchstaben] als [Erster Buchstabe]

und [Letzter Buchstabe] das [Lj.

3 Unter [Eigenschaften für system] klicken Sie auf [ok]. Über das Display werden Sie

zum Neustart von Windows aufgefordert, klicken Sie auf [Ja],

Wenn Sie die Software auf dem Computer neu installieren, folgen Sie bitte den oben

aufgeführten Schritten 2 bis 3, um [Reservierte Laufwerkbuchstaben] auszuwühlen.

Vor der Reinstallation mit dem DVD-ROM-Laufwerk-Pack und Erste-Hilfe-FD ist eine
Verändemng des CD-ROM Treibers nicht nötig. Das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk kann ohne die
Veränderung störungsfrei arbeiten. [Verwenden Sie den im CD-ROM Pack (CF-VCD271)
vorhandenen Treiber,]

Einsatz des DVD-ROM-Laufwerk-Pack im MS-DOS-Modus

Wenn Sie das DVD-ROM-Laufwerk im MS-DOS-Modus nutzen möchten, müssen Sie
anschließend aufgefühlten Schritte 1 bis 3 die vornehmen, um die zusätzlich erforderlichen
Treiber zu installieren. Wenn die Schritte 1 bis 3 nicht vor der Installation der MS-

DOS-Treiber abgeschlossen wurden, arbeitet das Laufwerk nicht störungsfrei.

7 Klicken Sie auf [Start] und dann auf [Beenden].

^ Wühlen Sie [Im MS-DOS-Modus neu starten] und klicken Sie auf [OKJ.

Energiesparfunktion

120 Sekunden nach dem letzten Zugriff auf das DVD-ROM-Pack wird der
Laufwerksmotor abgeschaltet, um die Leistungsaufnahme zu reduzieren. Bei einem
erneuten Zugriff auf das Laufwerk wird der Motor wieder eingeschaltet. Das Hochlaufen
dauert etwa 30 Sekunden, erst danach können wieder Daten von der Disc gelesen werden.

Précautions pour l’utilisation

• Ne placez pas d’objets autres que des disques dans le tiroir.

• Ne laissez pas le tiroir ouvert et ne touchez pas la zone de la lentille. Si la lentille est
maculée de poussière ou de saletés, l’appareil ne pourra pas lire les disques
correctement.

• Dans certaines conditions, de la poussière peut s’accumuler sur la lentille ou sur le
disque et éventuellement entraîner un mauvais fonctionnement.

• N’appliquez pas de force excessive sur le tiroir lorsqu’il est ouvert, cela pourrait
l’endommager.

• N’ouvrez pas le lecteur de DVD-ROM et ne déplacez pas l’ordinateur pendant l’accès
au lecteur de DVD-ROM. Cela pourrait entraîner un mauvais fonctionnement. De plus,
après avoir fait fonctionné une application qui requiert un accès au disque, n’ouvrez le
lecteur de DVD-ROM et ne retirez le disque qu’une fois l’application fermée.

• Après avoir fermé le tiroir, n’essayez pas d’accéder à un disque avant que le témoin ((m^)
du lecteur de DVD-ROM ne soit disparu.

• N’exposez pas le Lecteur DVD-ROM à la fumée dégagée par de l’huile ou par du tabac.
Cela pourrait réduire la durée de vie de la lentille.

• En cas de mauvais fonctionnement, le nettoyage du lecteur de DVD-ROM à l’aide d’un
nettoyant à lentilles CD (à l’exception des nettoyants de type liquide) est recommandé.

• Ninsérez jamais de corps étrangers tels que des trombones dans le logement du Lecteur
DVD-ROM.

• N’utilisez pas de disques déformes (tordus, pas complètement ronds, etc.)

Afin d’éviter d’endommager les disques:

• Ne touchez pas la surface du disque pour éviter de la salir ou de l’égratigner.

• Faites en sorte que les disques demeurent propres et sans égratignure.

• Ne posez pas et ne rangez pas les disques dans un endroit exposé à la chaleur, à la
lumière directe du soleil, à l’humidité ou à la poussière.

• N’écrivez pas sur l’étiquette du disque avec un stylo à bille ou tout autre crayon.

• Si le disque est déplacé d’un endroit froid à un endroit plus chaud, de l’humidité risque
de se déposer sur le disque.
Essuyez l’humidité avec un chiffon doux, sec et sans peluches avant d’utiliser le disque.

• Prenez garde de ne pas échapper ou plier les disques, et de ne pas placer d’objet lourd
sur les disques.

• Le nettoyage du disque à l’aide d’un nettoyant à CD est recommandé à intervalles de 2 ou
3 mois.

Après avoir nettoyé le disque avec un chiffon doux et humide, essuyez-le avec
un chiffon sec. Essuyez-le toujours du centre vers l’extérieur.

1 Éteignez l’ordinateur.

N'arrêtez pas Tordinateur en utilisant le mode de suspension* ou d’hibernation.

* Dans Windows 98, "suspension" est appelé "Mettre en veille".

2 Pour retirer le périphérique (lecteur de

disquette)

périphérique sera légèrement éjecté.

@ Retirez le périphérique en le saisissant par les deux

côtés.

• Manipulez le périphérique de la façon indiquée (en le tenant
par les deux côtés). Sinon, le périphérique risque d'être

endommagé. N'appliquez pas de force excessive vers le bas
sur le périphérique.Les parties saillantes qui se trouvent sous
le périphérique subissent une déformation.

• Assurez-vous que le veiTou situé sous le périphérique ne subit
de déformation. N’insérez pas un périphérique ayant subit une

déformation dans le Multimedia Pocket. Il pourrait être
impossible de retirer le périphérique par la suite.

Préparation du logiciel

Les réglages qui suivent sont nécessaires pour préparer Tutilisation du Lecteur DVD-ROM :

1 Cochez l’option [DMA] dans [Démarrer] - [Paramètres] - [Panneau de configu

ration] - [Système] - [Gestionnaires de périphériques] - [CD-ROM] - [MATSHITA
DVD-ROM SR-8I73] - [Paramètres].

2 Dans [Lettres de lecteur réservées], choisissez [L:] pour [Lettres de lecteur de

début] et pour [Lettres de lecteur de fin], puis appuyez sur [OK].

3 Dans [Propriétés Système], appuyez sur [OK], L’affichage vous demandera de

redémarrer Windows; sélectionnez [Oui] pour redémarrer.

^REMARQUE>

(avec le CD FIRSTAID fourni) : Lors de la réinstallation, reportez-

vous aux étapes 2 et 3 ci-dessus pour choisir les lettres réservées au lecteur de CD­ROM.

• <Le modèle dont le Lecteur CD-ROM (CF-VCD711) n’est pas fourni>

Lorsque vous démarrez l’ordinateur avec la disquette FIRSTAID (pour réinstaller le
système d’exploitation, par exemple), le lecteur DVD-ROM n’a pas à être remplacé
par le lecteur de CD-ROM (CF-VCD271). Le pilote de CD-ROM identifiera le lecteur
de DVD-ROM.

Pour utiliser le Lecteur DVD-ROM en mode MS-DOS, effectuez la configuration du lecteur

en suivant les étapes ci-dessous après avoir complété les étapes 1 à 3 ci-dessus. Si les étapes

ci-dessous sont suivies sans avoir d’abord complété les étapes 1 à 3 ci-dessus, le lecteur
ne fonctionnera pas correctement.

1 Cliquez sur la touche [Démarrer] puis sélectionnez [Arrêter].

2 Sélectionnez [Redémarrer en mode MS-DOS] puis cliquez sur [OK].

3 Ouvrez le fichier "CONFIG.SYS" pour l’éditer en effectuant les commandes

Mode d’économie d’énergie

S’il n’y a pas eu d’accès au Lecteur DVD-ROM pendant 120 secondes, le moteur du lecteur
sera automatiquement arrêté pour réduire la consommation d’énergie. Lorsque l’on accède
de nouveau au Lecteur DVD-ROM, l’alimentation du moteur du lecteur est rétablie. 11 faut
toutefois environ 30 secondes pour que les données du disque soient effectivement lues.

^REMARQUE )-

• L’icône [Disquette 3'/2 (A:)] affichée sur le [Poste de travail] ne peut être sélectionnée
que lorsque vous utilisez un lecteur de disquette comme périphérique externe

• Les références au "CD-ROM" dans Setup Utility ne varient pas selon l’ordinateur
